Global Frackdown

via GlobalFrackdown.org:

Fracking for oil and gas poses a direct and immediate threat to our drinking water, our health and our communities. But the oil and gas industry is ramping up its PR machine to try and convince the public and decision makers that fracking is safe. It’s time to fight back in our communities with a Global Frackdown!

There is a tremendous amount of organizing going on across the world to protect our water and our communities from fracking.

Together as a movement, in the past year we have:

  • Passed over 200 local measures across the United States to ban fracking (including state-level legislation in Vermont);
  • Stopped fracking in Bulgaria and France;
  • Pushed for moratoriums in multiple regions in Europe;
  • Obtained a moratorium on fracking in South Africa;
  • Defeated state legislation that would have expanded fracking;
  • Prevented plans to open the Delaware River Basin to fracking;
  • Worked to stop pipelines and facilities to export fracked gas from coast to coast.

The Global Frackdown will unite concerned citizens everywhere for a day of action on September 22, 2012 to send a message to elected officials in our communities and across the globe that we want a future fueled by clean, renewable energy, not dirty, polluting fossil fuels.

This Fall as the United States debates its energy future and the oil and gas industry escalates its public relations offensive, it’s critical that our elected officials – some of whom are running scared – hear the truth in a powerful way from their constituents. It’s time to expose the oil and gas industry’s propaganda for what it is. It’s time to hold our elected officials accountable. It’s time for a Global Frackdown!

Participants in the Global Frackdown will be organizing events in their communities to challenge decision makers to oppose fracking, united around a common mission statement calling for a ban on fracking and investment in a clean energy future.

Are you ready for the Frackdown? Sign up to endorse the day of action or join or host and event in your area.

About Fracking

Fracking, technically known as hydraulic fracturing, is a highly water-intensive and relatively new process that injects millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals thousands of feet beneath the ground to obtain previously hard-to-reach oil and gas deposits. This polluting process is:

  • Endangering our drinking water supplies
  • Polluting our air
  • Releasing dangerous levels of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that can migrate into nearby wells, causing home explosions
  • Negatively impacting agricultural communities
  • Perpetuating our addiction to fossil fuels

Learn more about the risks fracking imposes on our water, air and communities.

As someone who has spent decades working in the water utility industry, I can tell you that aquifers are more valuable than gold. Aquifers proved better water storage than surface storage reservoirs. But once an aquifer collapses or becomes contaminated, it reduces water storage.

This is a catastrophe in the making.

Moreover, we do not even know what kinds of chemicals are being injected into the ground because they are "trade secrets."

I can also say that even if FRACKING companies tell you that they are not injecting in the area of an aquifer, there is migration. You can find that those chemicals will plume, seep and migrate way beyond the oil and gas fields they are after.

Our health and safety and long term survival are at stake.

very well said - aquifers are more valuable than gold

Dr Fahd bin Abdulrahman Balghunaim, minister for agriculture for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, explains: "Food you can import, but water is very different. The government has taken - in my opinion a courageous - decision to give water priority over the food sector. We decided to lower our reliance on locally produced wheat [to be phased out by 2016]. The government said it will phase out buying wheat from local producers and go towards importing wheat from abroad". The government then positioned itself as a facilitator for the Saudi private sector seeking land and agricultural investments overseas, providing funds, credit and logistics, establishing government relations, signing agreements and conducting investigations into water resources, quality of land, availability of labour, facility of FDI and transparency, which it then avails to its domestic companies

Those motherfrackers are still at it.

Here's some more words on what's in that stuff anyway?

I am watching the documentary that shows how all this BS gets done through manipulation of the public to manipulate local politics and to manipulate national politics - misinformation disinformation propaganda.

Thank you for the post UD.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

My wife taped it last night.......:)

Do you begin to understand now, what I mean when I mention "multi pronged marketing/PR"?

The multiple manipulations are often demographic specific.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Absolutely - targeted demographics - use of prejudices - use of bigotry - use of ignorance - use of the purchase of air time to sell fiction. Money fucking up fucking with fucking over society.

It's not just fracking polluting things these days.

The whole industry is doing it.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes - it is one abuser feeding another abuser - this culture of no responsibility no accountability - which says the bigger you are the more you can get away with is a systemic illness - that we the people need to address - by taking back our government and pushing for laws already on the books to be enforced as well as making systemic changes like the implementation of green power fuel industry infrastructure technology.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

The danger in that, to me, is that too many proprietary technologies will hold back overall innovation roll outs.

Somehow standards will have to be made and acted on.

After Fukushima, it should be obvious, and that was just an issue with 2 incompatible power grids.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

There are industry standards. New equipment added to the power grid would have to meet existing standards.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Take a look at the proprietary issues Tesla itself is creating with their own cars.

Such a charging station needs to accessible and effective with all such cars to be successful.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

They are setting themselves up in the position of leasing access to designs to other manufacturers as well as setting up their parts suppliers for growth. They are positioning them self to be the industry standard.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

We'll see how it goes.

Others will be attempting their own "standards", and this is a lot more important than Beta vs VHS.

Tesla will be stepping on some BIG toes.

Don't get me wrong, I wish them well This is a tech that should have been on the road for decades already.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yep - there are some epic battles upcoming. Tesla is going for a market advantage by starting out with free recharging. The cable industry got a boost in a similar way by starting out with no commercials. Once a market has been captured changes will no doubt be introduced.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Exactly.

One thing ya can give credit to Californica for = pushing against pollution

Now if they would halt fracking altogether.

Take note Colorado ( scarce water ) as well as all other fracking states:

" State’s drought has forced farmers to rely on groundwater, even as California aquifers have been intentionally polluted due to exemptions for oil industry.

California officials have ordered an emergency shut-down of 11 oil and gas waste injection sites and a review more than 100 others in the state's drought-wracked Central Valley out of fear that companies may have been pumping fracking fluids and other toxic waste into drinking water aquifers there. "

[-] 0 points by 99nproud (2697) 9 years ago

Western drought is a deadly motivator.

For that reason & others Cali has & will be a leader on environmental issues.

We should follow their lead

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 9 years ago

We should follow their lead

Californica IS the birthplace of much of the rest of this nations anti pollution measures/actions. Did you know that they have a working fuel cell power generator now?

[-] -1 points by 99nproud (2697) 9 years ago

Did not. But not surprised. I believe I heard they are installing hydrogen filling stations as well.

Listen, they are most populous state and they have a high percent of car use/need.

Very little public transportation. So with that massive # of drivers (& valley affect) they (& everyone else) saw 1st hand how smog/pollution builds up.

I remember Carson doing smog jokes in the '70's.

They HAD to be 1st. Just as China is finding their unfettered embrace of western car driven life (& more) is polluting cities

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/23/us-china-pollution-beijing-idUSKBN0FS16J20140723

It's crazy

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 9 years ago

Hydrogen filling stations? If I rememberize correctly - that working fuel cell power plant is in Orange county Cali and it generates hydrogen as part of it's normal operation.

Now we really need to get the rest of the country invovled in implementation.

I still really like the idea of ending qweasing wall street and shifting to Quantitative Improvements.

Just think what 85 billion a month investment could do for the implementation of clean energy production and overall upgrade to our brittle and dirty power grid.

[-] 0 points by 99nproud (2697) 9 years ago

No argument there boss, we've been subsidizing greedy, selfish, lazy banksters for too long.

Please disregard the idiot in the vid calling for expansion of fossil fuel extraction for conversion to hydrogen ( still not a bad thing to do with the fossil fuel that has already been extracted ) and check out this vid. It shows that we are ready to implement hydrogen in a big way - all that needs be done - IS - Doing It.

Gotta keep pushing for implementation.

Sad - but - TRUE

Though it really " should " be joyful fast exciting and popularly supported by all - yep - ALL - even the fossil fuel steaming festering piles of crap that are currently fighting tooth and nail against the implementation of clean energy - they are in the best position to immediately profit BIG TIME from the transition but are insanely fighting it.

The "Global Frackdown" map doesn't show ANY fracking in Canada, but there is significant "fracktivity" [HA! my word] in Northeastern British Columbia ["B.C."] and in the Sacred Headwaters [Stikine Valley] area also.

Industry and govt. regulators have admitted that fracking does cause "low-level earthquakes" that register on the seismographs - News article> http://tinyurl.com/8jpsxfq Full Report> http://www.bcogc.ca/document.aspx?documentID=1270&type=.pdf

Besides the threat to underground aquifers, fracking uses a LOT of water in the operations.

Fracking in an energy-intensive operation too - they use huge pumps powered by electricity, sometimes with their own diesel generators.

The EQUATION: "what do we get out of it - lost water reserves + costs of all kinds" When it comes out negative, as has been the case so far, it is an example of "privatise the profits, socialise the risks" [as with nuclear power, etc etc]

Fracking the reservation.

Just another phony prosperity bubble?

"No one imagined tanker trucks barreling up and down Main Street, back-to-back like freight trains, seven days and nights a week. No one predicted construction zones that grind traffic to a halt as far as the eye can see, the deafening clatter of semis, the dust kicked up by 10,000 vehicles pulverizing the two-lane road every day or the smell and taste of diesel. No one anticipated the accidents, two or more a week on Main Street and all over the rutted reservation roads, costing lives and shattering families. "

How are they going to spin this one?

"Chris Mobaldi became gravely ill after gas rigs moved 300 feet from her home in Rifle, Colorado. Her symptoms worsened when a well next to the property exploded. Developing symptoms of biblical proportions -- rashes, blisters causing her skin to peel off, headaches, bloody stool -- she began to rapidly age, with her vision and balance severely compromised. When the Mobaldis found they could ignite their water, the gas company told them to stop drinking it. But then four months later, the company said it was again safe to drink. Then, Chris was diagnosed with the first of three rare-pituitary tumors linked to fracking chemicals."

In the past week, rumors have begun swirling in Washington about a major new announcement from President Obama regarding his administration’s plans to tackle climate change.1 Good news, right?

Tell Obama we can't afford All of the Above

Well, sort of. Regulations meant to limit greenhouse gases, such as those the President is likely to announce, are without a doubt necessary and a good thing.

But you can’t drill or frack your way to a safe climate. You can’t have it both ways. This is an inconvenient truth that the President doesn’t yet seem to understand.

The Obama administration has for years pushed a dangerous “All of the Above” energy plan focused on more drilling, more fracking, and more pipelines and handouts for dirty fuels.

Meanwhile, Colorado is fighting back its most damaging wildfire ever, towns in Alaska shattered all time record high temperatures this week, and massive tornadoes continue to inundate the Midwest.

Now the rumors are that the President is going to outline new policies to tackle greenhouse gas pollution from power plants, increase building efficiency standards, and encourage more renewable energy production. These are important steps, and we hope they are successful.

But at the same time, the administration continues to undercut its own efforts by digging up more oil and gas around the country. That’s like trying to climb out of a hole with one hand while digging yourself deeper in with the other. It just won’t work, and we need to let the President know it.

Look, we’ll be first in line to applaud this administration – or any administration for that matter – if they present a real, comprehensive plan to move beyond dirty fossil fuels and towards a cleaner, climate-friendly future. But what we’ve seen is that they aren’t likely to do so on their own.

So, in the next few days as the President prepares to lay out his plan to tackle climate change, we need to get loud. We need to remind President Obama that a “climate plan” coupled with more drilling for oil, more fracking for gas and more pipelines for these dirty fuels simply won’t work.

Will you help us make some noise?

Thanks for your help, David

If we’re going to stop fracking, we need to make the case to Ernest Moniz, President Obama's energy secretary.

Please read the email below from our friends at CREDO, and sign their petition urging Moniz to reject proposals to export fracked natural gas, which would greatly increase the demand for fracking.

Thanks for fighting fracking, Jesse CREDO Action

Tell Energy Secretary Moniz: Don't encourage expanded fracking.

The petition reads: Fracked natural gas exports are a major threat to public health and the climate because they would encourage dramatically expanded fracking in the United States. Reject all pending and future permits to export natural gas.

Automatically add your name: Sign the petition ►

Dear Friend,

As the new energy secretary, Ernest Moniz is responsible for deciding whether to grant permits allowing the fracking industry to export huge quantities of natural gas overseas.

If he green-lights fracked gas exports, Moniz will encourage more fracking in the United States, endangering our precious water, putting the health of countless Americans at risk and accelerating climate change.

Shortly after being sworn in, Moniz promised to take more time to study the issue before granting any more permits to export gas.1 That's a genuinely encouraging step and the right thing to do. But Moniz has voiced support for fracking and gas exports in the past, so we need to make it clear that a delay is not enough.2 Only promising to reject all permits to export gas will protect our water and climate from the threat of dramatically expanded fracking.

Tell Energy Secretary Moniz: Don't encourage expanded fracking. Click here to sign.

It's clear that the Obama administration wants to green-light fracked gas exports. Earlier this year, at a forum with Central American leaders, President Obama predicted that the United States would export more gas than it imports by 2020, an unambiguous signal that he hopes to approve the slate of permits to export gas that are currently under review by the Department of Energy.3

And just before Moniz was sworn in, the Energy Department approved its first natural gas export permit in two years--another deeply disturbing sign that the Obama administration will be putting pressure on Moniz to give the industry permission to export more gas.4 5 But, as energy secretary, Moniz has a lot of leverage in the administration to push back against pressure from the White House to approve fracked gas exports. We need to make it clear that we're watching, and expect him to stand up to pressure from the fracking industry and the White House

Tell Energy Secretary Moniz: Don't encourage expanded fracking. Click here to sign.

If the Department of Energy grants the industry permission to export massive amounts of gas overseas, it will be a boon for the frackers--and a disaster for everybody else. Fracking is a highly toxic process that contaminates water and releases poisonous air pollution, putting nearby communities at risk. Furthermore, as recent climate disasters like Superstorm Sandy demonstrate, it's dangerous to consider any policy that would dramatically expand fossil fuel extraction in the United States.

Moniz has expressed support for fracked gas in the past, but, now that he's a highly visible public official, he's likely more susceptible to pressure from activists. We need to make it clear that Americans across the country are watching him closely, and expect him to put our health and safety ahead of the financial interests of the fracking industry.

Tell Energy Secretary Moniz: Don't encourage expanded fracking. Click here to sign.

Thanks for fighting fracking.

You Made the Global Frackdown a Huge Success, Now Keep the Momentum Going Take Action to Ask Congress to Stop Exporting Fracked Gas

Pollute Our Water to Sell Cheap Gas to China?

You can't drink gas.jpg

Speak Out to Ban the Export of Fracked Gas

The Global Frackdown was a huge success, with thousands of people in dozens of countries all over the world taking action to ban fracking.

Now, keep the momentum going by asking your representative to ban the export of fracked gas.

When we launched the Global Frackdown with some of our partners, two of our primary goals were to help cut through the propaganda put out by the oil and gas industry, and to build a broad-based call for a ban on fracking. I think it was a huge success, and I'm absolutely inspired by the actions that happened on five continents last Saturday. But, I also know our work is far from over.

We don't think any fracking should happen, but what makes this whole proposition even worse is that oil and gas corporations want to frack our land and water here in the U.S. to export cheap natural gas overseas for a huge profit. Join me in telling our members of Congress that we don't want to sacrifice our good health and clean water for the gains of the fracking industry.

There are two bills in Congress right now that could help stop the export of gas produced by fracking. If we limit fracking companies from selling gas overseas, we'll help take away the market for fracking, while also protecting our health and our water from this hazardous process. Tell your representative to co-sponsor these bills and help fight fracking today.

We know that injecting millions of gallons of water, sand and deadly chemicals into the ground to extract natural gas through fracking is not how we're going to move toward a clean energy future.

Help us send a strong anti-fracking message to Washington: https://secure3.convio.net/fww/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=233

What I added to the letter:

We should not be exporting LNG - Hell we should not be allowing fracking PERIOD! We have absolutely no need to destroy our environment/air/land/water to extract fossil fuel. Not for use here in the USA and not for use elsewhere in the world. Stop the killing of the world for profits.

We have the technology available right now today to end the strife abuse pollution death. The technology to save our world from death by pollution.

Consider - what if instead of throwing billions of dollars away continuously sending money to governments in need of help for their people ( monetary aid that somehow never helps the people ) - what if we were to instead buy products from American Businesses - large and small businesses at market prices not at profiteering prices. These products made here in America domestically could be sent to meet the needs of the afflicted/needy. Food clothing medicine but also and more importantly in many ways - green power/fuel technology that they could be taught to run and maintain - green tech that would be sustainable by these under developed countries. Power to light homes, power to pump water, power to use for transportation - real support for a societies infrastructure and all non polluting.

Poverty/scarcity of resources causes all kinds of societal/world ILLs. We can clearly see the ILLs effects on society of a failing economy right here in the USA and we are a modern and developed country.

We can change all of that - here at home and to the rest of the world. We need not be on a path of perpetual armed conflict.

We have the technology - we have the capability we certainly have the need.

It is all here and ready to use - and this is just what I have stumbled across.

Spread the word.

Green Tech. New and improved - now with Liquid Metal Battery for efficient power storage and distribution.

This is where we should be going: Green Energy we have the technology we just need to use it. This is what I am talking about. A clean future to be implemented NOW!

Wonder what the world news reports will look like tomorrow?

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Wow -- in less than 24 hours, over 22,000 Sierra Club supporters have demanded that TransCanada stop intimidating peaceful Keystone XL protesters. But this is not the only new front against Big Oil this week -- we also need to oppose the expansion of Shell's Jackpine tar sands mine.

According to Chief Allan Adam of Canada's Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, "Our lands and way of life are supposed to be protected by... the Canadian Constitution... It's time [for] both government and industry to ensure our rights are protected."1 Yet bile duct cancer rates in Fort Chipewyan, which sits near massive tar sands mines, are much higher than average.

The Canadian government needs to stop tar sands mining, not rubberstamp plans from Shell to dramatically expand it. And yet the government is poised to approve Shell's request to increase production at the Jackpine Mine by 50% -- a devastating blow to indigenous communities, wildlife, the Boreal Forest, and our shared climate.

The deadline to submit your comment is Monday, October 1. If enough of us tell the Canadian government that Shell's tar sands mine is harming the world, we can make this an international issue -- submit your comment today!

Chief Adam and the ACFN tribe filed a lawsuit against Shell last year -- but they can't beat Big Oil or the Jackpine Mine alone. This is a global issue that threatens us all.

Tar sands oil is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth. Expanding the Jackpine Mine means an additional 1.18 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions poured into our climate, as well as the creation of a new pit lake that, once full, will contain 128 billion gallons of toxic tailing pollution. Furthermore, Shell's own reports admit some species will lose over 50% of their habitat, a catastrophe for caribou, songbirds, owls, lynx, and martens.

Some officials even believe the mine expansion could break the law -- regulatory documents suggest it could blow past the legal sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide limits.2

By opposing the expansion of Shell's Jackpine Mine, you will be helping to increase international pressure on Canada to shut down tar sands mining. Submit your comment to the Canadian government by Monday's deadline!

Thanks for all you do for the environment,

Michael Marx Sierra Club Beyond Oil Campaign Director

Personalize your message - this is what I added to mine:

The insanity of the destroying of the environment and the poisoning of peoples for fossil fuel is so sick and depraved - Death and Destruction for money. There is no more need no more excuse for these continuing fossil fuel destructive extractions.

This Is the Most Important Film You'll See All Year Throw a Gasland Part II Premiere Party for the HBO Release on July 8th!

Your Friends Need to See This

In 2010, Gasland gave our country a wake-up call. For the first time, our fracked neighbors had a national audience. But three years later, our communities are still fighting for their health in the face of tremendous oil and gas industry influence over our elected officials. So what now?

Sign up to throw a Gasland Part II premiere party with your friends for the HBO release next month, and help build your local movement against fracking!

After the overwhelming response to the release of Gasland, Josh Fox, writer and director of the film, wasted no time getting started on documenting the next chapter of the story. In Gasland Part II, Josh digs deeper into the impacts of fracking, not just on our air, water, climate and health, but on our democracy itself. In advance of the release, Josh has been touring the country, holding grassroots screenings in key areas affected by fracking. The response has been incredibly powerful. Will you join in?

HBO is premiering Gasland Part II on July 8 at 9 p.m. local time. This is the first chance to share this important film with everyone you know, so we can continue fighting back. Sign up to host a premiere party with your friends, and we'll send you a toolkit to help you plan your event.

For those of you who don't have HBO (like me), you can still join in! I'll be co-hosting a premiere party with a friend who does. And if that's not an option for you, we'll do our best to connect you with a premiere party in your area. Sign up here and we'll get you started: http://act.foodandwaterwatch.org/site/Survey?ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS&SURVEY_ID=14221

Thanks for taking action,

Katy Kiefer Activist Network Coordinator Food & Water Watch act(at)fwwatch(dot)or

Comedy show - last man standing pushes fracking. Episode aired 11/30/2012

YES - MSM is very good at propaganda/brain-washing. Insidious to put such filth into entertainment. And better then 90% of the population may not even notice.

You don't need to take my word for it here is a collection of information on fracking : http://nofracking.com/

And fracking is needless - there are clean alternatives for energy production and for transportation and for heating and cooling. We have the technology - we have the capability we certainly have the need.

It is all here and ready to use - and this is just what I have stumbled across.

fracking must be the easiest way to produce energy and therefor profitable

profit is always looking for ways to produce with fewer workers
