Occupy the Debates

In 2008, many people throughout the world backed Obama. Some international polling reported over 85% of people across the globe backed his promises of “Change.”

Of course, the only “Change” to unfold was the continued expansion of the military industrial complex, privatization, deportation of migrants, austerity, resource depletion, and imperialist agendas. This lethal cocktail resulted in the further consolidation of vast wealth at the top of society. While Obama and Romney blatantly lie to the world in debates over the meaningless differences in their nearly-identical policies, the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer, and the methods of exterminating the poor are becoming ever more sophisticated and now, automated. Big banks continue to get bigger as they rig the system (see: LIBOR) while foreclosing on homes and earning vast profits at the expense of the rest of us. The disparity in wealth has proceeded at an even faster rate under Obama than ever before. His signature health care law is merely a handout to corporate interests that fails to protect the most vulnerable. With nearly 1,000 U.S. Military bases encircling the globe, it is not only those inside the 50 states weighing the potential ramifications of the outcome. Average people across the planet are stakeholders who will suffer its effects.

Thus, the highly topical #OccupyTheDebates online encampment of mainstream debate hashtags is a revolutionary social media action. It enables the international community to participate in the four-yearly spectacle first hand. No longer are we passively absorbing speeches on issues with pre-approved parameters; we are free to air our legitimate concerns and fears in the public domain. We are not constrained by pomp and circumstance, or blacked out by the conventional media who find themselves having to compete for the attention of what was once a captive audience.

It is a sign of the times that the top tweet from the #DenverDebate was not by CNN. It is by independent media.

The cat is out of the bag. Electoral politics have been exposed as a public fraud. Increasing numbers of us are awakening to the inherent flaws in the colossal scam disguised as democratic process. Democracy in modern times should not equate to one vote every four years - let alone one vote restricted to a pool of a few corporate-endorsed, corporate-financed candidates who are then positioned as the ultimate representation of millions of people.

Once awoken to the lies and corruption behind politics and the media, there is no undoing it. The 1% have failed to control the flow of raw data flooding our information systems. Social evolution will no longer stagnate due to their manipulation, interference, and sabotage. We rightly see ourselves mirrored across the global spectrum as populations equally monopolized by similarly oppressive regimes.

The Occupy movement has reconciled the global family and connected us in new ways. Now gained, we will never willingly yield those relationships. We are witnessing a major societal shift toward unity and against forced austerity. Around the world, countless people are freeing themselves from intergenerational bonds. World events are dramatically accelerating; the tidal wave of the Arab Spring continues to sweep the Mediterranean, Western Europe, and North America. In Madrid, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, Athens, New York and far beyond, we are rising. One by one, corrupt oligarchies will fall.

On #O13 (October 13, 2012) the #GlobalNoise campaign seeks to again unite hundreds of cities in protest.

It is thus, with irony, that we report the seizing of the debate narrative by #OccupyTheDebates. This may be the first U.S. Presidential election where the veil is being lifted. The people are beginning to see through the “Goldman Sachs vs Bank of America”, “McDonalds vs Burger King” puppetry theater. We are using social media online, in addition to action in real life, to get a glimpse at an idea, at aspiration, to SELF-manifest real change. We have learned - many of us the hard way - that hope and change will not be brought down from a savior, but must come from us.

Americans already on that path have done much to restore the U.S.'s international reputation, so damaged by endless conflict, now being restored by everyday people. Though the tasks ahead of us all may seem insurmountable, we need only to know that together, we are unstoppable. Another world is possible.

Join us throughout the rest of the debate season as we seize the discourse and occupy the debates!

At the debate Romney looked lit, and Obama looked like he took a downer. Before they debate, political candidates ought be given a piss test.

Why is inclusion of the 'working class' taboo in the debates. Where is the working class in America, who speaks for the blue collar, all we hear is middle class, middle class, middle. And statistics and statistics, and lies and damned lies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies,_damned_lies,_and_statistics

[-] 3 points by shadz66 (19985) 11 years ago

"Middle Class" is a specifically designed term of 'false conciousness', designed to keep people 'divided and ruled' ! IF anyone needs to 'work' to maintain their life styles and pay their bills - then they are really 'working class' - 'ipso facto' !! All else is affectation, conceit, ego and snobbery !!!

I want to help in any way I can. This movement speaks to my heart, and we as Americans need REAL ,change. I'm very grateful their our organizations like Occupy The Debates that are looking at the real issues. We need to find the root of corruption, and find a way to stop the lying and greed.

"Electoral politics have been exposed as a public fraud." So the question is; Why do so many people here waste so much time on it?

If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet. - Proverbs 29:9

For a long time I was aware the lesser the TRUTH the higher the AWARD. For example, man who cannot even manage his own house, becomes a leader. Man who cannot fix a broken pipe, is awarded Nobel prize and so on. The OWS movement tells me the answer. They built a clan system--rich will become richer and poor will become poorer. Sad, but it makes me laugh aloud too. There is an African (?) proverb, "You cannot eat the money when resources run out." Modern "experts" and "leaders" do not know this natural truth; that leaves me to wonder what they learnt in life.

The Presidential Commission on Debates has hijacked the process and shut out candidates that gain support at the g4rass roots level. This was initially exposed by the League of Woman Voters over twenty years ago but since then their criticism has been low key and most people have forgotten. During the "Expand the Debate" segment and the show preceding it Amy Goodman exposed this and gave some candidates a chance to participate and Jill Stein and Rocky Anderson did. Then the obvious follow up would presumably have been to do the same thing throughout the debate season but at least for the Vice Presidential debate; however she is apparently going to continue with the Expand the Debate segments for the presidential level according to the following schedule:

http://www.democracynow.org/blog/2012/10/10/expanding_the_debate_upcoming_democracy_now_election_specials

I would prefer that she also do it for the Vice Presidential Debate but am glad to see that she is doing more than most people; for a while I was beginning to wonder if she was going to follow up. Regardless I think we should Occupy the Media “Expand the debate” at Democracy Now! and let all the media outlets know that we want more coverage of all candidates and issues. One way that this could be done is by letting them know via Facebook E-mail and all the other methods of communication available as described in the following string or otherwise.

If you think their is no difference between Obama/Biden and Romney/Ryan then seriously do OWS a favor and get out. Obama may be a little soft in his support of us but we know what the Republican's have said and done to us. I am sorry, but it is in OWS's best interest that the Democrats gain and remain in power. If you think things suck now, don't vote and watch what happens under President Romney. You haven't seen suck until your under a Republican President. The Democrats can be forced into supporting what we say, the Republicans are already bought by the Koch Empire.

The Republican Party = a piece of dog shit

The Democratic Party = a piece of dog shit with cheese. Hey, at least it's got cheese on it! And at least it's better than just plain ole dog shit by itself! lol I don't know why...but for some weird reason, when I get hungry, this is always the only menu I ever allow myself to choose from when I eat. Can't think of any other possible option. Haven't developed that side of my "brain" yet. At least we have "a choice"! lol And besides, everyone else keeps eating it, why shouldn't I? Why shouldn't you? Why shouldn't we all?

My Momma said that if you don't eat your dog shit with cheese... then you might as well have eaten just plain ole dog shit by itself and that's gross!

Dog Shit. And Dog Shit With Cheese. It's What's For Dinner :-)

Amen. I will be voting for Obama. There is money floating the way of both candidates but there is a difference in those contributing. The Koch Bros. have Romney in their pocket. They are using big money to suppress voting and steal the election by any way. Why would they so DESPERATELY want Romney? Why?

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 11 years ago

Why is Murdoch contributing a lot more money to Obama than Romney? I find that very interesting on many different levels.
