Forum Post: Why the Obscure Handles and Disguises?

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

I don’t really remember Gore being there to contribute but I did help invent the Internet (my impeccable resume proves my early involvement with the DoD and the DARPA project.)

I wonder though, why do some many young people use silly handles when they post provocative statements on forums such as this instead of their real names?

I use mine but it affords me hate mail as well as a clear conscience about stating my beliefs.

And why do you wear disguises when taking to the streets in ‘protest’.

Bold up and show who you are lest your opposition think you are cowards.

You are clueless. Either you've never been an activist or you're fishing. Getting 'hate mail' is the least of anyones worries in this business.

Who are you? The secret identity police? Bold up? For you.

You admit you are still wondering about the subject. Yet somehow, amazingly, you have the gall to proceed anyway to tell others how to act.

Please do direct me to the book you've written that demonstrates your mastery on the subject at hand. The supposed book where you have clearly finished wondering and have weighed both the pros and cons of retaining secret identities - surely you must have written a book - surely you did not come here just wagging your sword around, beating on your chest like a know it all, but actually looked at the question from all sides before drawing such a macho conclusion.

Fake psychic people who have implausible powers to astral travel across the web and determine one's age...(cregglund probably sees dead people too)

For one thing, screen names get hijacked on this forum. I'm no computer expert so I cannot say why or how this happens, but it does. Hence if one uses his true name any and all sorts of words can be put into his or her mouth.

Can you show proof that a name was highjacked? Iv'e been using this forum since the beginning and have never heard of a user's character being highjacked. I think you're either lying, or simply propagating silly rumors.

What would be the point of providing a real name? The importance lies in the arguments, not the proposer. And, in 99.9% of cases the name would give you nothing. Does it matter to you that my real name is Michael P Evans? The only advantage is if you want to use some ad hominem or appeal to motive, i.e. if you want to use a logical fallacy that attacks the proposer of the arguments instead of the arguments.

Personally, I don't even think usernames should be attached with comments. And, comments should have no karma points. It should simply be a comment. That would force people to judge each argument on its own merit, instead of by who it was written and how many points that writer has.

I'm calling for the opposite of what you want. I call for complete and total anonymity on this forum. Let the arguments rise above everything else. Let's squash the possibility of using simplistic fallacies like ad hominem.
