Forum Post: Why isn't there a HUGE protest against the media?

Posted 12 years ago on Feb. 15, 2012, 2:50 a.m. EST by Peachie (2)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Why aren't protesters filling the streets with the theme of speaking out against the media blatantly hiding truth, obsessively covering meaningless stories instead of what's really going on in the world, from TV news to Time magazine covers, and treating America like a bunch of ignorant sleeping children?

I think keeping the media honest is one of the most important battles right now in this country. America deserves to be as informed and cultured as the rest of the world (otherwise they'll continue to be controlled). Speak out against the major corporations controlling what the media is allowed to show and say.

Hi Peachie, Good post. This is a serious problem. During the Cold War, there was "Radio Free Europe", for people trapped behind the Iron Curtain. Now we need "Radio Free USA". Best Regards, Nevada

try msnbc & wwrl
and yes - I know who owns them
I have repeatedly heard the talking heads on MSNBC report their owner GE paid no taxes

MSNBC still hid SOPA/PIPA until the Jan 18th blackout. Then spun it as Hollywood vs Silicone Valley. Still conspicuously silent on indefinite detention.

google MSNBC & NDAA just two of many- http://www.businessinsider.com/ndaa-covered-by-msnbc-this-morning-watch-2011-12 http://www.businessinsider.com/rachel-maddow-covering-the-ndaa-dont-stop-2011-12 in addition to a complaint by ron paul that MSNBC is not covering NDAA exactly on 11/29/2011

[-] 1 points by forjustice (178) from Kearney, NE 12 years ago

Good for them.

Covering this dangerous of legislation should not be the exception. By all means recommend Rachel Maddow. Even if she gets to this a couple weeks late, she's better than most on the major networks. But don't let someone think watching MSNBC will make them well informed. We need coverage before it passed congress. That's what would be needed for people to contact their representatives before a vote.

Are they covering the Enemy Expatriation Act? Are they covering PCIP? Did they cover the European protests of ACTA, on air? (those are real questions. I haven't watched msnbc much in the last week)

"Why isn't there a HUGE protest against the media?"

Because no one would ever know about it.

[-] 1 points by JIFFYSQUID92 (-994) from Portland, OR 12 years ago

You mean like the first few weeks of OWS??

Eventually, they have to cover stuff, or the censorship will be obvious even to the sleepy masses.

But you will see the worst shots of OWS that they can shoot!

Image makeover! Clear signs, clean flags!!!

Unite and Win! Unite and Win! 2010 Never EVER Again!!

Image and Vote! Image and Vote! "We the 1%" NOT What They Wrote!!

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

I just don't think the media is going to go out of its way to cover protests against it. They have an image to maintain, and toothpaste to sell.

[-] 0 points by JIFFYSQUID92 (-994) from Portland, OR 12 years ago

No, it would be an anathema for MSM to even recognize an OWS (ONM) protest.

But examine this whole issues from every angle.

They can't [obviously] not cover something. They have to maintain the "illusion" of trust with the [viewers]. Break that trust and those viewers aren't buy'n no god damn toothpaste or insurance. It's a damn magic act, with sponsors.

Imagine online shots of Network News Organizations, taken by OWSers raising hell about the lack of MSM News coverage!!!??? That would go viral, they would look like fools. Loss of advertising revenues UP THE ASS!!! Catch up!!

Works for me!!

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

They can mention it in passing. And they can present it as being smaller than it is, and put the cameras on a few select slackers, and make sure they emphasize and present a subtly negative narrative on the protests.

Online network news organizations can't alter the impact of that, because for every positive image or story presented there, a negative one pops up, too. And people generally believe what they are predisposed to believe, and seek out information sources that support those preexisting positions. Little would change.

The messenger could never admit he has been giving false messages. That would mean loss of advertising revenue. Nor would the corporate sponsors be too pleased with airing the truth about them and their relationship to the media. As long as the truth is suppressed (via ignoring it), the money will keep flowing.

Look, it's worth a try. But I suspect it will follow the law of diminishing returns.

Good point. We need a plan.

[-] 3 points by Quark (236) 12 years ago

There should be a class action law suit against the media because they are clearly in violation of the Espionage Act of 1917.

[-] 2 points by redandbluestripedpill (333) 12 years ago

Oh yea! Great idea. I'd say sue them. Like 50 plaintiffs. Start with the biggest in your state. Send a letter of constructive notice advising them if they do not give information on a vital subject for national security, that they will be concealing treason. After 45 days, file a lawsuit.

Then, take that suit to the 2nd largest media in the state, with another letter of constructive notice advising them that they will be sued for concealing treason IF they do not share that news vital to national security.

At each court hearing, there is an "Occupy the court" protest. Note takers in the audience take the proceedings out to the protest on the street and the "humn mic" repeats the critical phrases.

OMG, that would be soooooooooo good.

The question for me is just why are those who control the media doing this to our country? I saw the Time magazine covers on The Daily Show and it is such a sad statement on the US. I can't help but wonder why they would try to hide so much actual news from us and say it plain to the rest of the world. It is strange indeed.

It is enough to make a paranoid person sane.

[-] 0 points by JIFFYSQUID92 (-994) from Portland, OR 12 years ago

Why is MSM not covering the news?

Why is there an OWS national~International Occupy movement?

It's the dominance, control, usurpation, exploitation of the 99% by an evil few in the 1%.

And the 1% has quite cleverly acquired ownership of MSM.

That's why the 1%-owned MSM doesn't keep us very well informed.

Be flattered though, obviously if we were informed we could make life very difficult for the 1%. Otherwise, they wouldn't waste all that money.

[-] 2 points by forjustice (178) from Kearney, NE 12 years ago

Occupy Time-Warner! Occupy Viacom! Occupy CBS! Occupy News Corp!

They dumped millions into trying to pass SOPA/PIPA. The lubed up the right politicians to write and sign ACTA. They hid and continue to hide indefinate detention of US citizens from the masses. The won't talk about us arming Bahrain while they slaughter civilians to stop democracy. I'd love to see Occupy turn more attention to them.

Protest by not watching, read something like the Huffington Post instead.

[-] 1 points by asauti (-113) from Port Orchard, WA 12 years ago

I protest by not watching it.

[-] 1 points by Puzzlin (2898) 12 years ago

Because they don't care like you do Peachie!

Oh, wait, Peachie, where did ya go? Oooops

Nevermind...

[-] 1 points by Peachie (2) 12 years ago

What the fuck is wrong with you? What do you expect me to do? Obviously no one else here cares, or they wouldn't be sitting around making pessimistic, fatalistic excuses as to why they shouldn't DO SOMETHING. Maybe I should have clarified: I was suggesting a call to action, since this is the official OWS forum, not the "sit around and watch the world burn" forum.

I'm trying to suggest ways to TAKE ACTION. Then I left for what, 18 hours, and you criticize me?

Hey!

[-] 1 points by Peachie (2) 12 years ago

Hey. I appreciate your enthusiasm, judging by your posts.

[-] 0 points by JIFFYSQUID92 (-994) from Portland, OR 12 years ago

Why are U judging my posts, man?

[-] 1 points by kylelee34 (48) 12 years ago

Maybe they are. If they did would you even know about it? The Media wouldn't cover it.

[-] 1 points by moxxy (10) 12 years ago

Because NYCGA is stupid and most OWS people are too immature to figure out priorities.

[-] 1 points by Okay1 (20) 12 years ago

Because the vast majority of Americans are ignorant, sleeping children.

[-] 1 points by shield (222) 12 years ago

Here's an idea. Why not just use the free resources available (the internet) and keep an eye on what congress is doing, report it to friends and family, and stop worrying about what other people AREN'T doing?

[-] 1 points by elf3 (4203) 12 years ago

Biggest issue of our time !!! Telecom industry/ Media is the cause of all of this - they refuse to investigate they refuse to report the truth - they pummel us with propaganda for their corporate owners. How many times can we hear about the newest gadget phone offered by the same monopoly or the same corporate chosen candidate. Occupy let's attack the media they can run but they definitely can't hide. Everything is about them - absolutely everything - wallstreet, bailouts, corporate corruption - Truman Show, Orwellian ruled society.... They are responsible. And they're not done - telecom is going after Net Neutrality - they want to control and censor the internet , and after that books. This is not freedom. In order to have freedom you must have a free press. Get the fuckers.

[-] 1 points by Nevada1 (5843) 12 years ago

Rupert Murdoch owns too much of the media.

[-] 1 points by michaeldanis (1) 12 years ago

media is the powerful area of Society..So no huge protest against media.

Our elite don't want us to go after the media. If you'll notice, the media is how we get our instructions, how do you think we knew to go after the evil bankers rather than our political elite?

If you weren't being instructed by the media how to think and act, seriously, what would you do? The media lays it all out for us, they tell us who the bad guys are, they led us to OWS which our elite created for us and where we are able to act on our instructions to the benefit of our elite.

Think about it, our media is doing a wonderful job for our elite!

AB-SO-LUTE-LY !!

Occupy News Media!!

Starting with Fox Lies!!

If MSM (main stream media) didn't omit, under and over cover, and have a corporate-owned bias, more than half of our problems would not exist. Public opinion, the power of the people, is what all those Citizens United bucks are going to ~ as we speak. Follow the money, that's where the key to the kingdom resides. "ONM" could create a lot of attention, MSM doesn't like that kind of attention, and effect some better coverage appeasements. But to get real change, we have to get MSM to exempt News from the tyranny of profits. Tough sailing when PBS is funded by ADM and Exxon Mobil.

Fox Lies (and RW hate radio) just needs to be rated XXXX, because it's more obscene than any porn could ever be. Remember that scene last year when protesters surrounded a Fox Lies van and just kept chanting Fox Lies!!!!??? That was a great American moment!!

Hello General Assembly!! Are you listening!! When do we start??
