Republicans have been lying about Social Security for 84 years. FDR himself offered this warning, after the passage of the Social Security Act in 1935:

"Let me warn you and let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion which says, 'Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them—we will do more of them, we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.'

"But, my friends, these evaders are banking too heavily on the shortness of our memories. No one will forget that they had their golden opportunity—twelve long years of it.

"Remember, too, that the first essential of doing a job well is to want to see the job done. Make no mistake about this: The Republican leadership today is not against the way we have done the job. The Republican leadership is against the job’s being done."

There's no honesty or sincerity in most Republican's or any conservative leader, especially the Wall St Oligarchs and billionaire hucksters like the Orange Clown.

I don't really know if it's different anywhere else. The only thing I'm certain of is that most Americans are brain dead.

(edit) I think for most that it is a conscious effort to ignore reality so that they can enjoy a non-stressful blissful ignorance - but reality has gotten REAL LOUD and Hard To Ignore and many are now being forced into wakefulness as reality shows them just how close to the edge that they have been forced into living.

Edit: But having just woken up, all of these people are lost & confused in trying to catch-up to the reality they have refused to look at for so long.

An example is that the people of Hong Kong are not "brain dead," as they have realized en masse the fact that they are living under a puppet regime of Red China's. Having lived with Red China's ownership for 22+ years, even its professional class realizes the insidious encroachments of Red China on their rights as stipulated by the de facto international treaty with the U.K.

It's international because the British Crown (Queen Elisabeth II) gave up Her Majesty's possession of the land (Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island) permanently ceded in the mid-1800s to the then British Empire in exchange for the various stipulations. The unrest in Hong Kong is not an internal affair as Red China has claimed. It's a global affair regarding the trustworthiness of Red China in upholding treaties and agreements that it has signed. Steve Bannon knows it well. He also knows the apolitical nature of Hong Kongers. The recent political unrests are symptoms of a decades-long pent-up dam leaking under pressure.

It takes people time to reflect on the conditions. They're not "brain dead." At least honorary "Russians" from the North aren't. There's still hope. The banned books are treasures of "secrets."

I suggest to people that they go here:

https://www.ssa.gov/

setup an account, find out what your benefits are, then fight like hell to keep them... the GOP work for the con artist trying to take away what you have....

I'm 73 on SS Retirenemt for 10 years. I and most low income people pay the payroll tax that funds Social Security all our working lives. The congress borrows and spends the SS surplus {$2.9 Trillion in 2018] then must budget the repayment to disperse benefits each year. They are constantly looking for ways to excuse defaulting on that debt to the low income workers and retirees of America. That's all the Repugnicunts and many of the Democraps. WTFU!
