He had the delusion of having superpowers, a death wish, a large budget and considerable explosives knowledge.... without guns to help him, he couldn't hurt anyone!
Let me see; you counter your own argument when you write, "He had...considerable explosives knowledge." Exactly. He could have bombed the theater and killed everyone inside. The firearms simply allowed him to play his delusional part, but without the guns he would have used another means of destruction.

Let me see. Hmm. I once bloodied my thumb cleaning my Ruger 9 mm pistol. That damned gun bloodied my thumb. I should have thought of outlawing it then.

No, I gave it a few good wipes with gun oil and put it back in the nightstand, fully loaded.

I'm very careful with my guns. At the same time, there's not much sense in having one for self protection if it's locked up and unloaded.
True - one must consider their individual circumstances and do what is practical for their situation. An unloaded gun that is out of reach is not any sort of protection. And if you have to use it to protect you and your family in your own home - then it is best if you shoot to kill - wouldn't want your attacker to sue you.
That's true. My insurance company would have a fit. "You shot the man BUT LET HIM LIVE." Corpses don't sue and can't testify.
And greedy ambulance chasers can't sign up the poor poor dead asshole who attacked you and your family. Justice has a better chance of surviving with a dead attacker.
I've given up on "justice." We have a legal system, which like our political system, is pretty much the property of the highest bidders.
Again it is money that is corrupting the system = for profit judicial system.

Can't say I really approve of assault rifle sales though. But murderers do find a way. Sadly tragedies happen sometimes.
