Forum Post: The Mentally Ill at Occupys

Posted 12 years ago on Jan. 12, 2012, 9:25 p.m. EST by riethc (1149)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

I wanted to bring something up that I'm not sure if a lot of occupiers are fully recognizing: There are many mentally ill people involved in Occupy.

At the end of a recent meeting I went to, a few stragglers and I were encountered by someone who I had met earlier at OWS. He had a few things to say about our working group, essentially being how he wanted our working group out of OWS. One of us decided to give him a few curt words back, but upon recognizing this person I immediately attempted to diffuse the situation, not so much to be a pacifist, but because the last time I spoke with this guy, he tried to get me to believe that "inter-dimensional shape-shifting reptilians" run the world.

Now turning on my computer and linking to a YouTube video of a CNN piece about the history of eugenics in America, I find another character who has firsthand video uploads on their channel of the Las Vegas Occupation. This is what he has to say about eugenics:

"This needs to be done!!! For the betterment of the human race! Developmentally disabled, criminally insane, or being unfit for parenthood qualifies one, in my eyes. The poorest people in the world are having 2-3-4 kids they can't provide for, this is what drives illegal immigration! Reduce the population asap!" (If you want to see the video, I'll have it posted below.*)

And thinking back, I remember one of our first marches on Wall Street. There was a young guy carrying a sign that spoke of his single demand: END CIVILIZATION

Now there are many other anecdotes that I can think of, and I'd be willing to list them, but my point is this movement has been attracting an inordinate amount of crazy people. Some of these people seem normal on the surface and can function at Occupys. They can organize actions, take the lead in discussions, facilitate, etc. Nevertheless, these people do not form a reasonable opinion about important subjects like the Financial System, Government, and generally how things work.

This, like the NDAA, needs to be recognized. People should be vigilante from keeping mental illness from taking hold of the movement.

It's also quite clear to the general public that congress has its fair share of the mentally challenged.

If they had any kind of ability, they would be working in the private sector.

Instead, they have to rely on bribes and donations for their keep. Poor buggers.

This post shows that no matter how egalitarian someone poses themselves as being they will find a way to discriminate against someone else.

You might want to think about my examples before calling me non-egalitarian.

OWS morons scratching their heads...wondering why wack job idiots are joining them. It's because crazy people identify with YOU. That is YOU. Welcome your mentally fucked up brothers. This is what OWS, liberals, progressives and commies attract.

[-] -1 points by smartcapitalist (143) 12 years ago

Haha.. totally agree with you. Btw, I consider myself a liberal but I am loony like these Occutards.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

There are indeed many conspiracy theorists at Occupy sites and on this forum who give a bad image to OWS and waste everybody's time with their nonsensical clap-trap like 9-11 trutherism, stories of reptilian overlords, various long ago debunked claims from the Zeitgeist movies, etc...

How should we eliminate them from the discussion without hurting their feelings?

[-] 0 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

I don't know about "eliminating them from discussion" but recognizing the problem is the first step. I would say they should be treated justly, but individuals should remain vigilante as individuals against this madness.

Get rid of the crazy people? But how? perhaps we should demand they be sterilized so that they do not reproduce.

"inter-dimensional shape-shifting reptilians" That is David Icke's meme lol. You can find him on the Alex Jones Channel along with the Ron Paul videos.

[-] 0 points by valfather (286) 12 years ago

Nice plug for Icke.

[-] 1 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

I do not like Icke at all, and meeting someone who believed unwaveringly in the reptilian theory makes me despise Icke all the more.

[-] 1 points by valfather (286) 12 years ago

You been had. At least twice.

[-] 1 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

Don't get me wrong, Icke says a lot of true things, but he throws it all away all when he starts on the reptilians and their moonbase. He's blending fact with fiction and by doing that, distorting truth.

[-] 1 points by valfather (286) 12 years ago

Icke is a showman. Anybody who takes his work literally is a loon.

I'm glad that you've brought it up, and I agree with you that the tinfoil hat people, amateur eugenicists, and other "interesting" people who are very good at making us all look like fools and loons need to go. The only question I can think of is how exactly that would be accomplished.

[-] 0 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

hilter started by shipping the crazies to work camps

[-] 1 points by debndan (1145) 12 years ago

Actually that is untrue, Hitler started by writing a conspiracy theory Mein Kompf.

This was a rip-off of an earlier conspiracy theory called the priories of zion.

Many of the 20th centuries greatest tragedies were done in the name of a conspiracy

another example?

Pol Pot killed 1/3 of his own cambodian population in the name of eradicating the western menace (that was a conspiracy theory that anyone over 30 years of age was under capitalist influence)

consequently millions died due to a nut berger

Need more?

China killed in excess of 20 million of their own population during the cultural revolution

The conspiracy theory there was that those in the arts and teaching were out to over throw the government

So once again wackos left unattended committed genocide

conspiracy theorists also committed genocide in:

Liberia

Loase

Vietnam

Rwanda

and sierra leon

[-] 0 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

here's genocidal slogan

a good injun is a dead injun

[-] 1 points by debndan (1145) 12 years ago

Yes, that too, was a genocide that was the result of a conspiracy theory

The pre-revolutionary war theory was that the indians would conspire with the french to kill white settlers

The resulting genocide actually forced the indians to seek french assistance against the atrocities, thus sparking the French and Indian war with the english

And this theory was updated a hundred years later to justify the late 1800's genocides as well

[-] 0 points by justhefacts (1275) 12 years ago

Depends on how far you want the number of OWS to drop....:)

[-] 0 points by ARod1993 (2420) 12 years ago

If anything I think our numbers would grow if we got rid of all the serious loonies, simply because I think that nobody much likes how things are right now, but they're less afraid of continuing the status quo than signing onto a movement that looks like it's chock full of crazy people (even though it's not). If we force out the actually crazy people and clean ourselves up then a lot of disgruntled ordinary people would probably be willing to consider us as a legitimate avenue for fixing things.

[-] 1 points by justhefacts (1275) 12 years ago

Hon....the "obvious" crazies aren't the problem. Obvious crazy is usually ignored by rational, intelligent people. It's the clever and almost reasonable ones that intelligent people encounter deeper inside the rabbit hole that are.

[-] 0 points by ARod1993 (2420) 12 years ago

Here's the thing; the intelligent crazies are scary as fuck to anyone who puts in the time to look at what they actually are; I knew one or two in high school and never again. Those people will need to be dealt with as well, or at least removed from any positions of authority for the sake of our integrity as a movement. What I'm worried about is the impression the stupid crazies have on the newcomers and the people who live nowhere near an occupation. Incidents involving them and the cops or them and the press turn into memes, and those memes make us all look bad.

[-] 0 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 12 years ago

You caught me in an unintentional ad hominem. Attacking the motive more than the message. It should be:

Exclusion from a group should never be based on how mentally gifted or mentally challenged a person seems to be, or how finely dressed or ragged, but only on how closely that person is aligned with that group.

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

A mentally ill individual is not very well aligned with a group of intellects.

I don't think we should exclude them, I think we should help them. We should ask them to see a doctor and take their medication before participating in OWS discussions. This would kill two birds with one stone. Conspiracy theorists would be healed, and they could still debate with us.

[-] -2 points by nappybegone2o12 (-31) 12 years ago

I think the majority of them are mental and or whacked out on drugs

Let's look at this 'forum-post' closely and question its 'mnop' - motivation, nature, origin and purpose :

a) "I wanted to bring something up that I'm not sure if a lot of occupiers are fully recognizing: There are many mentally ill people involved in Occupy."

b) "Now there are many other anecdotes that I can think of, and I'd be willing to list them, but my point is this movement has been attracting an inordinate amount of crazy people."

c) "People should be vigilante from keeping mental illness from taking hold of the movement."

The above is actually impressionistic, negative, unreasonable & unreasoned and a de facto Troll Post from a possible infiltrator with malice aforethought whose real purpose could actually be to post a video (which I have NOT seen!) PROMOTING the ideas of "Depopulation and Eugenics in America With Forced Sterilization" !!

But - Hey ! I could be wrong !! But WhoTF (other than himself!) made 'riethc' any kind of authority on the sanity of others ?!!

Re. this BS 'forum-post', the real question is ...

Cui Bono ?

[-] 1 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

lol

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Lol! It was to be expect that riethc's post would attract mentally ill conspiracy theorists.

[+] -6 points by shadz66 (19985) 12 years ago

The poster is 'hung on his own petard' and I use his own words to highlight his essential 'anti-OWS' nature, yet you jump in with your 'post-factum' rarionale ... and we should make of that, what ?!!

Perhaps you ought to stick with 'Glaucon' if not his younger brother, by way of inspiration of any future unsolicited comments ...

ad iudicium.

The link is to a CNN report on people who were victims of eugenic policies. You can check it out for yourself.

It is an interesting question. The mentally ill are among the most disenfranchised of American citizens. They are also among the most vulnerable. As such they do not belong on the front lines of protest, where interaction with authority may easily become heated, and physical confrontation a distinct possibility.

I think we have already witnessed the limits of the anarchist dream of self governance - in the encampments where the homeless gathered among us, and indulged in that common ailment - alcoholism. Humanity is not self governing, not without a clear set of rules to follow, and then only when there are a credible set of responses or sanctions.

Given that, I am not at all convinced that the Movement at present is equipped, ideologically, to adequately deal with the issue of vulnerable populations among us. We cannot have them on the front lines of protest - nor can we allow disruptions of our organizational meetings. I'm sure that those who can participate without disruption are more than welcome.

We cannot allow fringe or otherwise discredited ideology - like that of eugenics - to be held up as if it were Occupy Movement ideology - for that is not who we are, and we will not allow our good name and reputation to be so besmirched. I know my own GA is working on a policy surrounding use of our group name, when where and under what conditions this can take place. We have also begun consideration of the issue of who represents us before the media, and on other occasions.

As for the tin foil hat crowd . . .

well.

I am one.

I wear my shiny foil hat with a difference.

and there are no aliens.

it's just another lie

told by actors on a stage

[-] 1 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

It's not people who have some theories (non-consensus truths fall into the category as well) but people who rely on theories to the point that they will continually make up lies to reinforce those theories. They are displaying traits of mental illness.

[-] 1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Indeed. 9-11 Truthers are a good example of these people.
