HAA - thought that would get a reaction.

Anyway - thought I would share this quick - and see if any of you have noted recent dramatic price jumps.

I just went to the gas station today and while there I spotted that a family size bag of chips just shrank again - I mean no big deal - who cares -Right?

Then I saw the price had jumped - to be expected - Right?

Same Old Same Old Different Day.

2.00 increase?

What are junk food manufacturers reacting to - getting ready for?

Is this in mourning for Hostess? Was/Is Hostess gonna be an excuse?

Curious to see where their sales go and how quickly.

There is no farm bill. Why is there no farm bill?Because the brain-dead assembage called the Congress Does Not Care about the millions of people in this country who have to live in Total Uncertainty without resolution of the issues which must be settled by a Farm Bill. This is causing chaos and uncertainty in commodities markets.Speculators love chaos and uncertainty, because they can then move in with capital manipulation to create Bubbles, which they desire to do,moving the bubble or bubbles around to different sectors so they can make huge profits and get out in time to leave others holding the bag. There was a huge drought,so corn is up,and fast food companies use vast amounts of High Fructose Corn Syrup. The rise in price you are seeing may be caused by one of those things. One thing you can be sure of is that Speculators will be inflating a new Bubble soon in the Bond market or in Commodities.

Potato chips - further down in this thread you will see reports that there is not a current shortage of potatoes.

Food should not be traded on the stockmarket.

[-] 2 points by trashyharry (3084) from Waterville, NY 11 years ago

Oh,they really adore creating panic and chaos in commodities markets!Potatoes may have done okay, but corn is short and food is NOT allowed to be food unless it is Slathered with High Fructose Corn Syrup.Corporate Food Companies HATE having to pay more money for anything and they exact savage revenge from consumers. They are also Mad because someday, one of these days, there will be a Farm Bill, and some of the Grotesque Overinflated,Insane and Ridiculous Tax Cuts & Subsidies handed off to the Giant Food Corporations will probably be-reduced slightly!Meanwhile volitility and Bubbles in Commodities KILLS people and Capitalists actually enjoy it because they know death and destruction and profits-THEY JUST GO TOGETHER!

A sad but true commentary on Greed the wealthy ( some ) and the CorpoRATion = A growing PROFITS over PEOPLE/SOCIETY/ENVIRONMENT/WORLD/LIFE pandemic.

[-] 1 points by trashyharry (3084) from Waterville, NY 11 years ago

The Capitalists have lost their minds-they actually believe that MONEY is more valuable than ANYTHING that could conceivably be bought with it.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes the Greedy "are" insane. Some thirty odd trillion dollars or so hidden/hoarded off shore pulled straight out of the economy would testify to this very real fact. As does the nose diving of society due to the practices of the Greedy.

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

I think farmers are getting like 8 dollars a bushel for Corn these days... Part of the Ethenol Subsidy isn't it?

Were they Corn Chips? Drought in the US this year...

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Potato - yeah major drought over 2/3 of the nation - really bad year for corn - potatoes(?) I don't know how they did. I don't know what is up with bio fuel subsidies - I should check with my brothers father in law - He is a farmer in southern Mn.

LOL Canada Patato Crop down 11% in some sectors. Looks like UK Prices were expected to go up on Potatos in 2012, but there were previous supplies of Potatos from previous year. Latest Quote shows prices now are well above the low rate from 2011( $236/ton pounds sterling vs $114/ton pounds steriling) (UK had a deluge of wet weather)

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/price-of-potatoes-to-soar-after-wet-821025

Potato Weekly - 10 December 2012

"...The GB weekly average price was £236.23/t and the free-buy average was £321.58/t last week.In the packing sector the pressure to source Christmas supplies eased as most packers have..."

http://potato.org.uk/knowledge-hub/newsletters/potato-weekly

"...Good weather in 2011 meant a plentiful supply of cheap potatoes, but recent heavy rain and flooding have delayed planting of this year’s main potato crop and made harvesting of early crops really difficult.

Robert Miles, of commodities analysts Mintec, said last year was a particularly good year for the main potato crops of the UK and Western Europe.

Overall, north-western Europe produced 26.6 million tonnes of potatoes – 11
per cent more than in 2010.

As a result, potato prices on wholesale markets are, on average, trading at well below their five-year seasonal norm – with prices at £114 a tonne compared with an average of £146 a tonne..."

Interesting - I wonder how the USA did - and if we are importing due to the drought? Markets can gouge if they have ya over a barrel.

This year’s drought conditions may result in potatoes becoming a source of feed for cattle.

Dry weather before and during the 2012 growing season led to poor forage yields and high hay and corn prices, so beef producers will be looking for other, lower-priced feed sources, says Carl Dahlen, North Dakota State University Extension Service beef cattle specialist.

Also, a 5 percent increase in acres of potatoes planted in North Dakota and nationally has resulted in a larger supply of potatoes and a low market price, according to Andrew Robinson, an NDSU Extension agronomist specializing in potatoes. Source: Cattlenetwork.com

Gouge is probably right. The price of patotos came down, supplies were up ...but somehow the corps are raising your prices.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Well - thank you for the research - so chips price hike - likely - GREED - I am absolutely stunned by this just stunned. Shocking.

Food is funny in that we can export many commodities or products ...We normally would not think that demand from overseas would increase prices for our Domestic food.

But it is like outsourcing I think. You outsource the demand and you need protection from Increasing Food prices. Maybe. I'm not any kind of authority or expert. But if farmers are selling by the bushel or ton for very little money ... like $110 dollars a ton of potatoes ... then it is possible that Foreign Demand will lead to shortages that Drive huge Price Swings.

Or it could just be Gouging as we always suspect. Instead of shutting off sales overseas ... someone can profit from depleating the US Market of Potatos ... and profit off the Price Doubling. Of course. How very Wall Street.

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes - how very wallstreet - while people die of starvation.

[-] -1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

I just inspired myself. I said "Or it could just be Gouging as we always suspect. Instead of shutting off sales overseas ... someone can profit from depleating the US Market of Potatos ... and profit off the Price Doubling. Of course. How very Wall Street."

This opens up a Subject of Protectionism. Shouldn't we Protect US workers by shutting off Outsourcing and Off Shoring ... just as we would if Exporting Oil or Food was driving up Prices by Creating Shortages in US Markets.

I think this is really a Mercantile Policy to protect our Merchants, our Producers, Our Manufacturers, Our Textile Industry, Our Agriculture, and ... Our Labor Force which has to be able to get Education and Job Skills Training.

Am I making any Sense.

Wikipedia talks about Mercantile Policies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercantilism Government Policy to Protect Industry ... which protects workers as well as the owners of the factories ...

If Neoliberalism has a basic goal of driving down wages and driving down US worker benefits ... then why wouldn't they want to destroy the Middle Class workers ... through Off-Shore Production ... through Off-shoring Services... through outsourcing Office or professional work ... through establishing off-shore corporate headquarters ...

But Why wouldn't the US Federal Government Move in to Protect the Future of US workers, the future of training of US workers, the financial security of the US workers, the affordablity of Food, Medical Care, Universities & Colleges, Trade Schools, Housing, .... Unless the US Government was "all in in the Neoliberalism" ...that anything goes ....that insider trading is okay ... that Shadow banking is okay ... that paying off US Ratings Agencies and paying off US Independent Audit Agencies is A-Okay ... that US Government Agencies that Regulate banks and finanical Instituations are "Feckless", toothless, have low staffing levels like thirdworld countries, don't have funding to support expensive civil court costs, and don't enforce the remaining laws that keep structure in the US banking and financial markets....

Does that make sense?

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes - you are making sense.

I really don't think that food should be treated as a commodity on the stock exchange.

I think that there should be a food council that that gathers information of shortages and gluts in the country - and then find homes for the excess - in say a needy country - then the government could buy the excess off of the farmers and ship it out in aid.

Does that make any sense?

I mean the government pays farmers not to plant fields - hmmm - stockmarket - government controlling planted fields - hmmmmm - nah - what am I thinking ......... well ..... it really could be ....... a conflict of interest(?) or would that be more along ..... no that would be untinkable . . wouldn't it(?) ....... um I mean ..... commodities manipulation?

[-] -1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

Ah, you are ahead of me, Councils are better than brokers in linguistics terms anyway. Councils can be corrpted through revolving door strategies ... of course. All government agencies can be corrupted without conflict of interest enforcement.

All third world countries know this, but not people in the USA.

Well, the USA is the wild, wild west. We are doomed without OWS. Mostly it seems we are already defeated. We should figure out what the last lynchpin of democracy/freedom is so we can mount a defense against the assault.

Could it be the US Constitution?

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

The constitution and the laws on the books. But it does not matter - if the people do not get involved and stay involved.

I had an idea - thought it might be good - might catch on:

Putting food on the stock exchange was one of the worst moves ever.

Another great piece of legislation that fucked us all by Clinton/Bush people.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes - there are all kinds of theories and thoughts about what the end times are - if they are - what they are - what they mean - what will be going on ..... it is a very well discussed issue all through history - it has never failed to draw many into considering.

But this potato chip thing? I believe it could be as simple as an error. The price hike program was only meant to be instituted in recently legalized pot states. {:-])

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

its a way to hide inflation or to fight it off

[-] -3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

How is inflation a way to hide inflation or for that matter - fight it off?

[-] -1 points by DanielBarton (1345) 11 years ago

to hide inflation they lower the amount of food in it

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/29/business/29shrink.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

but since the price to produce these foods has shot up they have to raise the price to earn a profit

[-] -3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Ah - don't think that is the case here - yeah smaller bag - so less product - but accompanied by a 2.00 hike? For chips?

[-] -2 points by DanielBarton (1345) 11 years ago

well it is, it all comes down to price of producing vs demand of product. Im assuming these are just your run of the mill potato chips or are they corn chips

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Regular potato.

[-] -2 points by DanielBarton (1345) 11 years ago

ok well looked into it there is a shortage of potatoes worldwide this year due to weather and this was announced a little while ago. so that is a source of price increase not the only im sure the fact holidays are coming is a sign too

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

2.00 bucks is pretty steep on a downsized product - around .30 cents short of a doubling.

[-] -2 points by DanielBarton (1345) 11 years ago

i know it is ill have to see if it went up since ive gone to the store last

Try using holy water garlic and say a mass of exorcism - might help.

I think the mass goes something like - The power of Christ compels you - It has been a while since I saw that movie with Linda Blair.

[-] -2 points by UnFriendlyObserverB (-55) 11 years ago

I just opened a fresh jar of pickles .. will that work ..for the holy water.. ?

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

I don't know you are in uncharted territory on that one - say a nice blessing over it and cross your fingers - got a cross?

I'd feel better if you had a jar of garlic stuffed olives.

[-] -2 points by UnFriendlyObserverB (-55) 11 years ago

! I do have a small jar of olives ..stuffed pimentos .. from spain .. unopened !!

and half bottle of Mr. Clean.. to wash my hands later .. that shill stinks ..

[-] -3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Well I was hoping for garlic stuffed - but maybe instead of holy water you can bless it as holy oil? Yeah you gotta be careful to wear gloves as you can get a toxic reaction - feel ok? not feverish? If you are feeling feverish you may want to make your self vomit and then gargle with Listerine or something - OH and wash your hands again and maybe wipe em down with some rubbing alcohol.

[-] -2 points by UnFriendlyObserverB (-55) 11 years ago

Okay I think I have everything .. even the cross ..? it's a big heavy one . gloves, check, fire extinguisher, check..

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Face mask ( something like a welders mask - full face coverage - but clear lens so you can see ) - I keep remembering that pea soup projecile vomit scene - OH - PONCHO ?

[-] -3 points by UnFriendlyObserverB (-55) 11 years ago

I should probably powder my self down with something..?

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Ummmm ..... probably coating yourself would be better ( no rain coat or face mask? ) bless a jar of Vaseline ( or baby oil? - oh I know use some of the blessed olive oil ) - that should give you a layer of skin protection.

[-] -3 points by UnFriendlyObserverB (-55) 11 years ago

Raincoat, coveralls .. check .. it's a shame .. I just bought that raincoat.. I'm gonna have to chuck it afterwards.. some kinda net would be nice .. or a paper box .. just chase it into there and at least take it out side ..before who knows what it will do in here .. and I found some garlic ! and I still had a couple masks left over from the SARS scare.. ski goggles and a veil tied down over everything .. back in a few minutes ..

[-] -2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

OH OH OH - - Wait - - got a rope? Got someone who can stand back a ways if you tie the rope around your waist - you know to pull you out if you hit a snag?
