Sunday - September 15th - Washington Square Park

Posted 10 years ago on Sept. 12, 2013, 7:38 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt (1) from Plainfield, NJ

You are invited, the 99% to join our Occupy family - gather, socialize, and educate. Bring literature, tables/ chairs. All that strive for another type of World, that is fair, just, and aligned with community building - this is the city where it started 2 years ago, and where we continue to make the words, “Another World is Possible” a reality.

Find out What Occupy has done this past year. If you have a teach in, you’d like to add for the day, - sign up on our blackboard at the Park.

11:00-12:00- Occupy Sandy Relief Program Interactive Panel Discussions - members from the front line speak about the Occupy Sandy campaign to save survivors of Hurricane Sandy. We will talk about the mutual aid that arose in the face of the storm.

12:00-1:00 - OWS Zapatista- "How NAFTA ruined my life" - testimonies from Mexican immigrants and why we should all fight the TransPacific Partnership.

Knowing that the 99% would never stand for it, the TransPacific Partnership has been negotiated with an unprecedented level of secrecy. Close to 600 official corporate advisers - including Wal-Mart, Halliburton, Chevron, Cargill, and the US Chamber of Commerce - have full access to the negotiating texts of the agreement, but the 99% locked out. These corporations have bought their way into our political system and are now shaping public policy.

2:00-3:00 TransPacific Partnership- Find out about the TransPacific Partnership which has been called a very sweet deal for the 1%.

Washington Square Park is a beautiful park in the heart of Greenwich Village. It is surrounded by buildings which are part of the NYU campus. Only 1/2 block east from this park is where the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire took place in 1911. Many people regard that tragedy where 146 people died (129 women) as being the main impetus that spurred the labor movement which eventually led to the end of The Gilded Age. A young lady named Frances Perkins who was having tea with a friend on that tragic day ran across this park to witness the first of many women jump to their deaths from the 8th-10th floors. She later became the first woman Cabinet member under President Franklin Roosevelt. Years later she said the New Deal began March 25th, 1911, the day of that fire.

I urge you all to go to the Brown Building which is now part of NYU and the site of that fire, and read the three plaques, and give it some thought.

Occupy has had many events in this park which aside from NY's Central Park is my favorite park. And on Sunday Sept 15th, the Occupy Puppets will be doing a photo-op and preview of the show which is a parody called Money Warz.... about the TPP and what a danger it is to all Americans as well as to freedom loving people everywhere. They will be performing on #S17 at 9-11 am at Zuccotti Park, and then the big one in Times Square at noon. I will be working with this wonderful group of people in the logistics end of it. Come one, come all.

Then there is also a great play being put on at 3:00 pm (the same day, the 15th) at the radical Judson Church which borders the park. As I have said previously on here, it is about the 1932 Occupation of Washington by veterans of World War 1, and there are many parallels to OWS. It is really excellent. Go to the link below, and click on Bonus Army for tickets. Occupiers in need are eligible for reduced prices or comp tickets too.

Anyone who wants to spend the day with some really great people should think about being here at WSPark Sunday, and then again Tuesday the 17th at the places mentioned in the above thread. Happy Birthday Occupy!!
