Forum Post: Stop The Corruption On Wall Street

Posted 12 years ago on March 12, 2012, 10:05 p.m. EST by GypsyKing (8708)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Folks, this petiton says it all. It targets the very heart of what we are fighting against, yet after six months it has only recieved 270 signatures. If on this site, the main OWS forum in New York City, we can't all together reach the goal of 1000 signatures, than frankly I don't know what I'm doing here.

Please STAND UP and actually DO something today by signing this petition, and passing it along to all your contacts.

This petition should have 100,000 signatures, minimally if this effort to end corruption is to be taken seriously by anyone.

WTF!!!

Hey, 4 new signatures so far, way to show commitment!

I signed but I think I know at least part of the reason that this petition hasn't gotten the widespread attention it deserves. It's too long, too complicated and too expository. It should be stripped down to its essential demands and all summaries of what and why should be left to the overview. Sentences like this are a good example:

"We request that the UpTic Rule, set place during the 1934 regulations to prevent pooling in it's Market regulations be reinstated having been abolished in a less than transparent fashion, redacted, not in the best interest of the American people nor the U.S. economy but as a result of special interest lobbying efforts bought and payed for by a small group of hedge funds whose big money influence on the regulators resulted in false reports To Congress by the Then SEC Inspector General Falsifying the actual data of the Need for the UTR ( UpTick Rule) and it's value to sustain a Fair market for Trading."

That's ONE sentence. I totally understand and agree with the sentiment but aren't there any decent copywriters in the movement? Anyone with any media or PR background help with this? It's great to enlist the help of experts in law and finance but those people need copywriters to communicate with the general public. This is a great idea that is partly being destroyed by its presentation.

I will pass that comment along to the petition writer. Thank you, and thanks for signing!!!

My pleasure.

Well, two new signatures so far, do I here three? Can New York City and the rest of the US contribute one more signature?

Going once, going twice (that's the auctioneer at your forclosue folks) - Sold, to the hedge funder, 'cause you wouldn't bother to sign a petition!

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

it asks for an audit of hedge funds

[-] 2 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

It's been put together by a professional with at least 6 years of her time spent fighting corruption on Wall Street. We need to support the work of people like her, or what the hell are we doing here!

Can you imagine how disheartening it is for her to get 270 signatures on this, after all the work of setting up this site, after 6 whole months?

This is a commited and dedicated lady, and a lady in distress.

I plead with everyone here to come to her support as she tries her damndest to support us, and to sign this and pass it to all your contacts with a plea for them to sign.

This is not a game we are playing and if we don't get pro-active in a committed way and come together to support each other, we will lose.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

will those audits be public and understandable ?

[-] 2 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

I can't guarentee that, but if enough sign, at least we can probably force those audits to take place!

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Well, any takers? We got thousands of people a day hitting this site, all with the goal, presumabley, of bringing down the most powerful sydicate on earth, and they won't even sign a goddamned petition!

This makes me really angry and disgusted! Shit, maybe the trolls are right when they call us a bunch of gutless whiners!!!

Show some spine for God's sake! You think we're going to have a revolution when people can't even be bothered to sign a goddamned petition? Shit!

Maybe there are too many emasculated, feminized white males. Maybe that is why you don't have many signatures.

I've signed a lot of petitions lately. We need media. Facebook links are waking people up, Kony 2012 currently an example. We need celebrities and some brave media to help our cause.

Yes, and we need to seek out and sign these damned petitions! People say the political system doesn't work, and they are right, but they are right at least partially, because the "system doesn't work, we need to work the system."

If a petition has 270 signatures nobody pays any attention - if it has 270,000 signatures they damned well pay attention! A populist movement is about NUMBERS and about action. The establishment simply can't ignore that evidence of vast and growing dissatisfaction, and the petitions are one very simple way to make them feel that pressure. Combine that with action on the streets and you can win. If you neglect either one or the other they can contain you.

Action and poilitics! It's the only way! So we can sign these and get involved in the political process, or we can lose and all of this will be for naught!

I'm simply angry at this perpetual disply of misunderstanding, or apathy, or cowardess on the part of progressives. More people are willing to vote and sign petitions in a lot of foreign dictatorships, where they are in danger of their lives, than in America; and then we complain that the sysytem doesn't work! Well, before you try overthrowing the system - with this evidence of apathy to encourage you - why not try to actually participate? It's this damed apathy that's killing us in the first place, and if people won't do THIS, than good luck changing anything with direct action on the streets!

Motivate! Participate! Get involved! DO SOMETHING! And don't let anyone fool you by saying that it doesn't matter! Those who say it doesn't are either willingly, or unwillingly, the enemy.

AND VOTE!

Then get really creative and find new ways to resist!

The people reading this forum are more aware than most. I have signed Bernie Sanders, Dylan Ratigan, and others. There are significant numbers of uniformed people, they only know the local news or what's talked about at work. It will take a big story to get their attention, even though I wish they knew about the petitions.

Another significant group will choose the strategy of never letting anyone know their political beliefs. We need to provide them with privacy or they won't vote. Their vote could probably be the key, and we can count on them if we offer the right things.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

This is a good point, but I also think the power of social media could go far to getting people aware of this petition, and of the online petition drives i general. As to those who want to hide their beliefs, I think they are almost as big an obstacle to reform, and re-asserting democracy as the bankers and corporations. There is simply no justification forthis but cowardice. Many of the signers currently are children. They still believe in democracy - and we as adults are afraid?

[-] 1 points by alterorabolish1 (569) 12 years ago

What's cowardice to you and me is a clever strategy to others. Some of them will become courageous, but many will not. Some of them expect their survival depends on it. They will vote for the things we are outraged about if we guarantee their privacy.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Yes, I agree with you that we need to do everything possible to make people feel they can safely participate, But that level of ear seems both premature and counter-productive to me, and I know it greatly stregnthens out adversaries. Yet I'm sure there are ways to do what you suggest:)

[-] 1 points by alterorabolish1 (569) 12 years ago

It can strengthen us instead of our adversaries if we continue waking people up to what's happening. We should confidently continue to express outrage and creatively find ways to inform the masses that our government process is broken, and needs to be altered.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

We must do this, yes, we absolutely must! The clock is nearing midnight!

Really, I thought they were caused by the duck billed platypus.

I signed this and looks like we picked up a new signature today.

I would think that this petition would be very popular.

This is direct action to take against corruption.

[-] 2 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Thanks DKA! If we can't get behind THIS, than WTF are we even doing here???

[+] -6 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 12 years ago

I do not understand why this is not a more popular item.

We are making progress over all, but for some reason petitions scare some people. Sen. Bernie Sanders petition is doing well but even it should have many more signatures.

Perhaps as we move forward as more things break in the on-line news more people will take part.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

I sure as hell hope so! We need to put more holes in the dike!
