Standing Up for Women and Democracy

Obama and Romney did neither as Jill Stein was arrested and tied to a chair for 8 hours for protesting their biased debate.

If they truly stood up for democracy they would have worked with her and others to join the debate.

Jill Stein speaking out in front of the debate between Romney and Obama

Billions of dollars should not determine who gets their message out and who the public knows about.

For those of you voting for Obama or Romney, why do they both participate in a debate that excludes the other parties candidates? Shouldn't fair minded individuals want to include rather than exclude other viable opponents. Don't you find it odd that the two parties now run the presidential debate? Not a politically independent and impartial group? Here's a brief history.

Control of the presidential debates has been a ground of struggle for more than two decades. The role was filled by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters civic organization in 1976, 1980 and 1984. In 1987, the LWV withdrew from debate sponsorship, in protest of the major party candidates attempting to dictate nearly every aspect of how the debates were conducted. On October 2, 1988, the LWV's 14 trustees voted unanimously to pull out of the debates, and on October 3 they issued a press release:

The League of Women Voters is withdrawing sponsorship of the presidential debates...because the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter. It has become clear to us that the candidates' organizations aim to add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and answers to tough questions.

According to the LWV, they pulled out because "the campaigns presented the League with their debate agreement on September 28, two weeks before the scheduled debate. The campaigns' agreement was negotiated 'behind closed doors' ... [with] 16 pages of conditions not subject to negotiation. Most objectionable to the League...were conditions in the agreement that gave the campaigns unprecedented control over the proceedings.... [including] control the selection of questioners, the composition of the audience, hall access for the press and other issues."[9]

The same year the two major political parties assumed control of organizing presidential debates through the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The commission has been headed since its inception by former chairs of the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee.

Some have criticized the exclusion of third party and independent candidates as well as the parallel interview format as a minimum of getting 15% in opinion polls is required to be invited. In 2004, the Citizens' Debate Commission (CDC) was formed with the stated mission of returning control of the debates to an independent nonpartisan body rather than a bipartisan body. Nevertheless, the CPD retained control of the debates that year and in 2008.

So Jill Stein represents only women?is her party only a women's party?

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Ya, and she was arrested just because she is a woman, too. Don't forget that. Had Jill really been John then it would never have happened.

[+] -5 points by Grimreaper2 (-318) 11 years ago

That is not my question. Can you not read?

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Sorry, man. I thought that you were saying it in jest. But, I realize..... You have no sense of humor. Noted.

[-] -1 points by penguento (362) 11 years ago

By rule, humor is not permitted to modern leftists. They're expected to maintain the traditional grim Bolshevik countenance at all times. They get a demerit for making a joke or engaging in humorous banter.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Really? Я ушел

How about the uber leftists?

[-] -1 points by penguento (362) 11 years ago

Worse yet. They're required to respond to any humor with a hystrionic and turgid screed denouncing the humorist as a capitalist running dog or bourgeois lackey. You see a lot of that around here too.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Then I shall forge a newer more modern left with a mo' betta' ideology and a cool name. Something like Leftists 4.0 and a party called Love, Peace and Chicken Grease.

And a club house.

Humor shall be mandatory.

And a strict rationing of nutella at all meetings? {:-])

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Hmmm.........IDK, free Nutella for all! lol

I don't want to stand in anyone's way. It's just not allowed in my house. :D

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

LOL - I can understand why ( It's just not allowed in my house ) - it is tasty - but a little too much like eating chocolate frosting.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

I have never eaten chocolate frosting in that manner. I use it for hot chocolate. It's mainly my crisis intervention gift. Got a problem? I will get you drunk or introduce you to the food of the gods.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

I think I would prefer a more herbal smoke therapy session. {:-]) Could be accompanied by a shot and a brew if you were to twist my arm. The food of the Gods would likely also get involved - you know - BECAUSE.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

I can't help you with that. lol I can't be around it.

[-] 3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Not a problem - I don't travel - so I will hoist one in your honor and wish you all the best.

The OWS show is on here, but at 5:30AM.

I'll catch it on the net...........:)

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

To be honest, I didn't think that she was all that funny. But, I only saw that one video. But, I'm going to check her out some more.

[-] 2 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

I thought she was pretty good, for doing all her own writing and producing.

The one on the Vatican is a hoot.

You won't get many members from around here. Most of these folks seem congenitally incapable of humor or pleasure. Their workers' paradise sounds like a dreary place indeed.

Myself, I'm very fond of love, peace, AND chicken grease, so I'll probably apply for a membership, assuming you'll let in capitalist running dogs.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Well, somewhere down the line we would agree on something/s and the love, peace AND chicken grease is a good start. So, yeah, capitalist running dogs allowed because I know that inside everyone is a little inner leftist dying to get out.

IDK, some of these folks can be pretty funny when it isn't a head on collusion.
