We are the only nation who will completely to quote toukarin, "eradicate a native population" then give them land and pay them to drink themselves to death. This seems completely ridiculous.
OWS wants to take a look at fixing problems you should look at programs like this. And before anyone says anything about me being a racist or a bigot, I myself am a 3rd generation indian and I think these programs are ridiculous.
I'm not quite sure what programs you're talking about?
I've lived close to the Navajos, the Hopis, the Zunis, and the White Mountain Apaches for years and never knew of anyone that paid them "to drink themselves to death."
Some, a larger percentage than in the off-reservation population, do drink themselves to death, but not because they're paid to do so. Also, the vast majority of reservation residents are decent hard-working people. Unfortunately, very few industries have chosen to locate to reservations, so unemployment on the reservations remains disproportionately high, as does poverty and its offspring: substance abuse, crime, sickness, and hunger.
The federal government has set up the Indian Health Service for Native Americans, which basically amounts to complete medical care; it provides low-priced reservation housing; and operates various social programs that are most often also available to non-Native Americans.
Tribal governments now exert considerable autonomy: allocating housing, setting the agenda for local education, controlling law-enforcement on their land, except in major cases or those serious offenses involving non-reservation residents, in which case the FBI steps in.
Most reservation residents choose to live there, in spite of the disadvantages because they want to use their native language, participate in their native culture, and--most hope--to pass on that culture to their posterity.
Do not denigrate the vast majority of Native Americans by lumping them into a stereotype, which has little basis in truth.
You say you are third-generation Indian, which I assume means one of your ancestors was a Native American. If you don't mind answering from which tribe?
I guess I should have included substance abuse but it makes more sense to say drink to death than substance to death does it not?

Can you name a specific program?
The AoA run through the Department of Health & Human Services.(http://www.aoa.gov/aoa_programs/hcltc/native_americans/index.aspx). The ANA program run by the same people(http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ana/programs/program_information.html).
Those were the first two I found.

Yes because I don't have a website for the program I'm actually referring to here but these do similar things they just aren't as old.

i completely agree. They lost and we pay them. Granted some of them were enslaved but that didn't last any time at all.
