Of course, Will Durant is the author of the epic "Story of Civilization", an eleven volume history of civilization. Note this jewel within the section The State page 25 of volume one, Our Oriental Heritage:
A state which should rely upon force alone would soon fall, for though men are naturally gullible they are also naturally obstinate, and power, like taxes, succeeds best when it is invisible and indirect. Hence the state, in order to maintain itself, used and forged many instruments of indoctrination-the family, the church, the school-to build in the soul of the citizen a habit of patriotic loyalty and pride.

the church - of almost all denominations - has promised how happy you will be when you are dead. Don't worry that the other guy is a billionaire - "It is easier for a camel to go thru the eye of the needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven"
