Forum Post: Radiation in Florida

I can remember as a child doing the duck & cover drills.

They never warned that cuts to the EPA could be just as dangerous over the long term.

Internal documents released under the Freedom of Information Act in recent years show, however, that the federal agency's lack of action was the result of state and industry opposition, and that EPA officials did in fact believe the sites could pose a serious public health threat.

The Florida crew doesn't give a damn.

[-] 3 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Why would they?

When was community ever their actual aim?

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

It's not. None of the Article V pos or the little Jeremy crew have any intention of it.

[-] 2 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

I started to wonder about a lot of them, when they attacked me for posting stuff from the Occupy site.

What's up with that?

They've been driving this one down, since I posted it.

http://occupywallst.org/forum/red-ink-the-movie/

It mostly traces how interconnected most of media is these days.

Only banned trolls commented.

The funny part?

Zizek, who's been getting some play around here of late, coined the term "red ink".

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Well, that is the name of the game.

[-] 3 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

They didn't notice this guy either.

The poor persecuted rich guy.

http://www.occupy.com/article/venture-capitalist-compares-war-1-percent-nazi-anti-semitism

In their two page book, they thought Occupy wasn't supposed to notice.

[-] 4 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

I saw that. What a dick.

Well, Matt, since you brought it up my son thinks that one rack of ribs is not going to be enough. So, when I got him up for school he said as much and then said that he hoped I would make a lot of stuff to go with it. I said it will be fine because I'm making a twice baked potato casserole, southern green beans, fried okra and a sweet potato pie. I don't usually cook 'Merican food but one of the older ones wants me to. I do but it's regional. He's a meat and potato guy. He also doesn't like the c word. C for casserole. I told him the menu yesterday and watched his reaction in horror. He isn't familiar with fried okra. The other older ones are. I told him it would be ok because I was making green beans in case he didn't like it. He also hates pumpkin pie. I knew this. In fact, last year I heard him say he was allergic to pumpkin pie and so I made him a sweet potato pie and he liked it. In fact, we had decided not to tell my son what it was until after he had eaten it. It was a joke. He asked me not more than 3 weeks ago if I would make it again. But, yesterday.........he didn't remember and seemed quite horrified. Anyhoo, back to your original statement. I know what you are about.

What an utterly mean spirited bully u are !!! The guy shouldn't have to prove himself to u or anyone !! He has now been here for a fkn long time ffs but has been forced, just like Odin - to take on new monikers !

hchc's original log-in had over 3k ''karma points'' [cf. http://occupywallst.org/forum/another-afghanistan-disaster/ ] before the DNC faction tried to misrepresent, hound and bully him BUT still he perseveres. U people should learn to differentiate between your arse and elbow asap & pdq, imo ! 'Mid-terms' driving u nuts already ?!! Sheeeeesh !!! We all stand or fall by what we say here - u and me too. Think about that.

''New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has appropriately been called a bully. This has implications well beyond Christie. His calling out has the potential to shift the growing public conversation about bullying from a psychological narrative about abusive individuals to a new discourse on institutionalized bullying, carried out by ruling institutions and elites.'' from :

''The U.S. military has won the ideological war. The nation sees human and social problems as military problems. To fight terrorists Americans have become terrorists. Peace is for the weak. War is for the strong. Hypermasculinity has triumphed over empathy. We Americans speak to the world exclusively in the language of force. And those who oversee our massive security and surveillance state seek to speak to us in the same demented language. All other viewpoints are to be shut out. “In the absence of contrasting views, the very highest form of propaganda warfare can be fought : the propaganda for a definition of reality within which only certain limited viewpoints are possible,” - C. Wright Mills wrote & .. “What is being promulgated and reinforced is the military metaphysics—the cast of mind that defines international reality as basically military.

I don't translate your gobbledegook, u should know that by now but IF u now have anything substantive to say do feel free to man up 'mais en anglais, s'il vous plait. D'accord ? Merci bien, bonne nuit et salut'.

NJ has a well-deserved reputation of being a political cesspool because of the corruption in both parties, hence it has rightly been the butt of jokes for a long time. In NJ, 'bi-partisanship' is a misnomer, as it really means that, 'I'm a victim of Christie's bullying,' as the Mayors of Fort Lee and Hoboken were.

The Trouble With Chris Christie

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been Wall Street's anointed son for the Presidency. He is backed by the most ruthless and corrupt figures in New Jersey politics, including the New Jersey multi-millionaire and hard-line [unelected] Democrat boss George Norcross III.".....emphasis is mine

http://m.truthdig.com/report/item/the_trouble_with_chris_christie_20140112

[-] 4 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

''If Christie implodes politically, Wall Street will no doubt find another candidate to be its lackey. The system of corporate power, not the individual at the helm, is fundamentally the problem for democracy.''

''The Democratic machine, led by Norcross, allied itself with the Republican Christie to crush the Democratic candidate for governor, Barbara Buono, who lost last November’s election by roughly 22 percentage points.'' !!!

From your excellent linked article from Chris Hedges about that p-o-s, Chris Christie & facts like these are exactly why The US 99% need to :

ad iudicium ...

[-] -2 points by northernlights (14) 10 years ago

Call me cynical, but "If Christie implodes..." is the big question. Considering that he is going to be investigated by a state legislative panel, and his old cronies at the US Attorney's office, I have my doubts as to whether he will be prosecuted.

Grow up. We as a people have to comb through legislation to find the truth. We have to scrutinize speeches and political messages to locate the truth. We have to carefully combat those messages delivered via commentary. We should not have do that on an OWS forum. There is a lot of shit that I can deal with. Lying is not one of them. Like I said, over time.........your shit is meaningless and worthless.

I agree

On all the disagreements on forum etiquette people ought to try to get along here, the personal comments, name calling, fbombs, looks bad bad for the forum, same as the old porno spam. Calling people a multi ID or a troll, should stop. It is a flame,

Just point out the illogic, and give up down vote. Also, down vote for bullying, evading, fluff, language.

The banning may need to stop.

1 somehow ensure everone gets 1 id, maybe fingerprint sighs up. 2 yes karma points 3 conspiracy theorists, or people who get -10 for a comment, get a cap of shame. 4 down vote bullies 5 down vote libertopiastas 6 down vote party rhetoric 7 logical " strategic " voting per Chomsky or ZD or GF or Shooz allright, if qualified as strategic voting

And there you go lying again. I'm not bullying him. You look phenomenally stupid. There is a reason that he is repeatedly banned. There is a reason that the libertopian shills are repeatedly banned.

[-] 2 points by renewable (56) 10 years ago

Did you "scrutinize" Ms Sawant's speech where she repeatedly trashed President Obama? Will you be sending her a nasty-gram?

"We have to carefully combat those messages delivered via commentary. We should not have to do that on an OWS forum."

I find it amusing that you seem to fancy yourself as the OWS Flag Bearer, this despite your nasty demeanor and partisan political views being totally antithetical to Occupy's.

Is it just a coincidence that you hold most of the people in such low regard who have views far closer to Occupy's than your's, or is your anger at them agenda-based? That's a rhetorical question of course, so no need for an answer, but yes we all know what your answer would be.

I know a lot of very good people personally who are working hard for this (not our's as in) (((you&me))) struggle, but I know no one like YOU!

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Why would I do that? I agree with what she said.

It's not my fault that you are a blithering idiot. Like it or not-Obama is not up for election. This means that you have to pay attention to legislation and to Supreme Court Decisions. Besides, you're a libertopian shill that campaigned for Rocky Anderson. You disgust me with your multiple Id cockroach crap and your lies.

You don't have anything to do with Occupy. Never have. It's all a bunch of bullshit. If you did then you could have made your case with Jart. But, that isn't what you are about. You are an 'effin drama queen. A troll. Nothing more and nothing less.I've repeatedly made my statements regarding the Democrats, you're just an asswipe.

In Florida, they should also be using underwater rescue parameters.

They're going to need them some day.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Yes, they will.

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

120000 people living on a now-former Superfund site "cleaned up" by the people's "representatives" through "negotiations." Even upscale "Oakbridge" residents fell for buying Superfund real estate, too. They might have hit the crack pot - nominated for "emergency cleanup action."

Believe me: I AM indeed the Olympic high-jump champion after I have "justified" the bar.

What's next? Retardicans telling us that Madame Curie died of cosmic background radiation?

[-] 3 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

What's next?

With the Florida libe(R)tarians in control.........nothing.

Hey, it's just a little radiation. If you can't see it, it doesn't really exist.

Like global warming.

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

The odds of dying from it are about 1 in 40. It is a little bit better than rolling a pair of dice and die if "cobra eyes" come up. I knew there had to be a reason why it is called a die - you only live twice.

The 500 millirems per year allowed is ONLY halfway to acute radiation syndrome, eh? Yeah, right, send these Retardicans to Fukushima to work their magic. Even Bikini atoll is still too cool for comfort. Wouldn't it be fun to watch them (remotely of course) sumo-wrestle at Fukushima's nuclear waste pool?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

So you'll be getting a condo in Lakeland?

A lot of deaths from long term radiation exposure are attributed to other causes.

[-] -1 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

Don't they all derive from the "cosmic background radiation"? I defer in reverence to the Condom minions to have their first pick because they are native to Florida. Will Lakeland be underwater from global warming or will the Burmese pythons get to it first?

[-] -1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

In this case it derives from long term EPA budget cuts at the behest of libe(R)tarians.

A situation that is not isolated to Florida, nor truly the EPA.

If it was you being irradiated, you wouldn't find it so amusing.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

Oh yeah, I get it now. The Burmese pythons are NOT limiting their diets to Florida real estates. They have ravenous appetites on our federal level, too. All native fauna, beware!

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

Remember when New Yorkers flew south to Florida to invest in real estates: condominiums, houses, hotels, resorts, etc.? Many developments were on swamp land.

I must have gotten jealous to think of nature-reclaimed swamp land at Lake--land and the "Empire State" becoming the new "Sunshine State." Ja, ja, Schadenfreude is a common affliction.

Okay, if I were being irradiated, I would do my radon defense. Seal the basement walls to become airtight so radon does not get into the residence, with any cracks getting the priority.

Radon is an extremely heavy gas so vent out the lowest part of the air in the basement first. Radioactive byproducts of radon tend to stick to dust so wet mopping the basement floor can get rid of them. A HEPA vacuum cleaner can remove radioactive dust in the air but store it properly afterwards. An air filter can help remove dust, too. Then try to automate the venting/cleaning process so they work consistently.

If weather permits, open the windows for half an hour in the morning to vent out radon gas, radioactive dust, formaldehyde, asbestos fibers, carbon monoxide, dust mite danders, etc. Outdoor levels of these tend to be vastly lower than indoors.

Wash fruits and vegetables (as meats tend to be packaged) to get rid of the radioactive dust before eating them. Cover foods or drinks to avoid their gathering dust. And most importantly, stop smoking. That will likely do the most good.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

There aren't too many basements in Florida.

Plus that's a lot of work for the innocent public, while once again the perpetrators live off of their off shore accounts, ,,,,,,because.....you know

Taxes are for the little people that have to clean up after them.

At any rate radon was a breakdown component.

The real problem ,since yo missed it is radium.

"The scientists noted that past phosphate mining had created elevated concentrations of radium-226 in the area's soil. Radium produces gamma rays that can penetrate the body and increase the risk for a variety of cancers. Inhaling or ingesting the uranium byproduct can increase the risk of leukemia, lymphoma and bone cancer, specifically."

Gamma rays and radon are two very different things.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

Yes, gamma rays require high density shielding such as with lead.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

You would have MUCH better luck developing an energy shield - take the magnetosphere as an exemplar and go on from there - lead is a poor shield against radiation. I mean how many miles thick lead shield are you thinking to put between you and the source of radiation?

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

Gamma rays are extremely fast oscillating electromagnetic waves that do NOT carry charge so they tend not to be affected by magnets or magnetosphere-like shields. Barium can also work in addition to lead. Basically we want nuclear "ashes" that have a lot of nucleons excitable by the gamma rays.

How much you need depends on how much you want to attenuate the gamma rays. Is that why they did not want to discuss much about gamma rays' shielding in Florida because "it's too hard"? Actually Florida has already used its people's power to get the EPA to buzz off so the radium-226 and the gamma rays will stay as the people there "wished."

[-] 0 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

It is definitely not miles of lead shielding because nuclear reactors generate gamma rays, too. They have stainless steel containers, concrete walls, etc. A first approximation is that one can sleep easy if one uses shielding as thick and dense as a nuclear reactor's.

The total radiation dosages increase with time so for people near the end of their lifespans, the gamma rays may not matter at all. By the time all the radiation-induced diseases show up, the person may have already been dead for a while.

[-] 0 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

If you see the reference to Madame Curie, you will see that I did not miss radium really. Gamma rays are the hardest to shield.

[-] -1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Yes, I know. You treated it as a joke.

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 10 years ago

I suspected that many Retardicans do not know about Madame Curie or the cosmic background radiation. It was in line with Kochtopus productions.
