Forum Post: President Obama, don’t cut Social Security!

Posted 10 years ago on April 7, 2013, 7:57 a.m. EST by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

As we shift the way Americans are paid from wages to capital gains and dividends. As we shift almost all GDP growth into incomes above the current Social Security cap, we must ask ourselves will we begin going down a path that returns us to the days before Social Security or will we keep faith with all of our citizens by shifting revenue sources to reflect the current economy?

Here is a link to a petition started by Robert Reich asking Obama not to cut Social Security:

Flat Rate Social Security, first dollar to last all forms of income!

Wow, before I finally go again, let's take this as an example of what we see in the media, and what knowledge we need to bring to it, to make sense of it.

Firstly, Obama knows that cuts to social security won't get past congress. We saw only a week or two ago that congress voted Unanimously against cuts, so that will not happen.

So, why does Obama come out with this? Why does he offer cuts? - To convince the (not to bright) American voters that he is willing to compromise, while the Republicans are not.

Of course he shouldn't need to convince anybody of this, but hey, these are American voters!

Now, having offered this, and being rejected, he will have ammunition to use in the midterm elections (in which, if Americans don't get out and vote their interests, they are fucked.)

So, in other words, Obama is still stymied. He is not a king. He must play the game until we give him the power to change it.

The last two years of his administration could be the most progressive since Rooseveldt, and it could get better from there. Will that be? That is up to us and our level of political commitment.

How will it change? Only if we change ourselves - only if we commit to become educated enough to understand these "complexities."

Of course none of this means we should stop pushing for change - quite the opposite. We are just begining.

Now, I'm OTTA HERE!

[-] 3 points by inclusionman (7064) 10 years ago

In a year and a half we have to replace conservative congresspeople with real progressives. Then the progressive agenda of Occupy may be realized. Certainly real progress can be achieved.

[-] 2 points by gsw (3406) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

Due to changes in the global structure, the world economy, advances in technology, corporations shipping jobs overseas to maximize profits and squeeze labor (all of us), now employers do not need as many workers as before.

We better begin ponder what to do with all the underemployed in the world, retraining, green tech, local agriculture, health care, elder care, or you'll be supporting them for eternity. I vote for on the job training.

Doesn't every person need basics items, or are some people not deserving, if able and willing to work, to have a job, shelter, food, medical.

Everyone on the planet deserves a better, sustainable system that works for all. Better pay for all, a job for all able persons, standards for health, food, shelter. I don't see OBama or either party working towards these more basic system changes.

Are my politicians asking these questions, or do they prefer we squabble amonst ourselves, and ignore the big picture.

Now there is money sitting in offshore banks, we could utilize any ill gotten money to,establish a global lending institution, to further goals of sustainable planet, meeting human needs.

[-] 3 points by inclusionman (7064) 10 years ago

I agree wholeheartedly. Much work on training/jobs is ahead. Neither party represents my positions.

The political system is broken. Until the new one emerges, I propose we protest, agitate, boycott, strike, petition, phone, all pols to implement a progressive agenda like occupy supports.

"Not to bright"? Thanks for the laugh.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

I think that chain CPI represents an actual threat, while President Obama does not even suggest the removal of the cap as a possible solution he offers cuts in benefits instead. How will it motivate the voters we need to vote in 2014 if they feel the Democratic Party is prepared to cut Social Security?

We must expose these footmen of the rich for what they are.

As far as 2014 goes, have you done the math? I've taken a brief look, a 10 to 12% shift beyond what was there in 2012 will be needed for the house to have any chance, I think the Senate and talking filibuster are our best shots, and we live with sequester till 2020 most likely.

[-] 1 points by OTP (-203) from Tampa, FL 10 years ago

They have already been exposed. Its obvious. A few are still holding on. This should have sealed the deal. If it didnt, well, theres a certain amount, about 10% on each side of the political isle, that will back theirs till they die. Not too bright, but understandable.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

All Republicans Love Rich People what 10% are you talking about? again with the making excuses for the GOP trying to pass off that old Green Party political lie that they are all the same.

[-] 1 points by OTP (-203) from Tampa, FL 10 years ago

Hmmm....Ive heard the Republicans saying that the Libertarian Party is actually a front for the Dems too, same with the Constitutional Party.

Seems like they are using the same tricks on their own people.

[-] 1 points by inclusionman (7064) 10 years ago

I don't believe you!

Let's see the evidence. Link it.

[+] -6 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

The Greens are just a bunch of lying political hacks I didn't say they were front for anybody, just a bunch of ego driven politicians is all I said about the Greens. The Greens care about the Greens they don't give a shit about America.

[-] 6 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

So what ? The Dems would thus be the only show in town from your pov, right ?! Holy Shit !!

WhereTF have you been these last 18 months and what do you think O.W.S. is all about ?!!!

verum ex absurdo ...

[+] -4 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

An enlighten movement cannot be built on a lie no matter how convenient or required it is for some Political Party to exist. If OWS is just about spreading Green Party Lies then they will share the Greens fate as the vast majority of Americans crying out for change never want to see another Bush in the White House.

[-] 8 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

"Summary of the Green New Deal" :

FAR more in keeping with OWS I think you'll find & really, your whole argument is predicated on a tenuous ''If'' above, which seems to clearly imply that you are locked into ''The Duopoly Delusion'' !!

Re. Bush, well what more can I say that isn't said here :

However, advocating the established Corporate Duopoly just won't cut it.

What was Albert Einstein's definition of madness again ?!

"You don't get a world revolution by supporting the status quo."

We should pool money together and fly this over the city, like this woman did: http://www.fiercefinance.com/story/one-woman-protest-hits-sp-wall-street-over-downgrade-decision/2011-08-10

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

I thought we had a world revolution in 2000 when Nader ran, wasn't that the beginning of a vigorous third party?

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

That's why I oppose voting for third parties, like I did in 1980, it's been done for decades and never works.

[+] -4 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

ah did I speak badly of your favorite political hacks?

[-] 4 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 10 years ago

Breaking the bond between corporation and state should be our goal. Most of what we are fighting for hinges on that single issue. To accomplish this will take the unity of people from many political backgrounds, united by a common cause that transcends every party.

[-] 3 points by Renneye (3874) 10 years ago

Ditto!!

[-] 2 points by redandbluestripedpill (333) 10 years ago

Yep, the Constitution is common and our first right of it is ART5.

[-] -2 points by jrhirsch (4714) from Sun City, CA 10 years ago

Why perform a major overhaul when just a minor tune up is needed?

[-] 2 points by redandbluestripedpill (333) 10 years ago

Because free speech is abridged, you think its minor, it is not. A minor tune up might make the elites tampering have less impact presently and in the future, but the serious problems will start again unless the nation is made fully constitutional AT LEAST ONCE!

[-] 1 points by gsw (3406) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

I twinkle that.

Why can't green party recruit Hillary, or someone with name recognition? A governor or Senator. Does Green Party have anyone in congress yet?

Kucinnich Warner?

[-] -3 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

Because the Greens are bunch of ego driven assholes with their heads up their asses.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

When you show me how pigs can really fly perhaps I'll understand your case a little better, till then I'm trying to actually get something done so I'll stick with the real world thanks.

Here in the real world people who work their asses off for Democrats help to keep Republicans from writing public policy and starting wars and such, while folks like Nader and the Greens feed their egos.

Talk about doing the same old shit, you talk as if Nader never ran, we been doing third party crap forever, yes it is time for something new. Hell I voted for Anderson in 1980.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

Take your fucking ego and go fuck yourself!

You like Nader just want the world to hear your shit.

Nader the traitor has crawled under a rock,

It’s the only place safe from the things that he wrot.

As millennia approached us, we had one last shot,

To keep the planet we’re on from getting, too damn hot.

But Nader thought better his name should be heard.

And Gore was left standing with only his word.

Ten times ten thousand thought Gore couldn’t lose

And a statement was needed to make the world choose

Are we to be puppets and dance on a string?

Or will we be spirits and let our hearts sing?

December reality came crashing in

The court has decided that Bush got the win.

Where was the outrage where were the cries?

Believers were muted they had bought all the lies

How could they scream, how could they roar?

When even their ballots weren’t marked for Al Gore?

The Court destroyed democracy that day

So it would be safe for the Royals to play.

Cutting taxes is sweet

And we love all the meat

But Bush had a fear

What if folks start to hear?

Then an appointment or two

And I give you C-U.

Delusion is thinking that we can keep Republicans from starting wars by making statements with our votes.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

Have you heard of this guy Jeb Bush? Look I voted for Anderson then lived through eight years of Reagan for my effort, the FACT is that if this "third party crap" had anything to it, the greens would have gotten more votes in 2004 instead of less, I have watched this carp for decades every-time the GOP gets the country to an even more than normally insane place a splinter group comes along and relives the pressure by giving the people who wake up a place to throw away their votes. This way the fucking GOP can survive, so I hope that OWS breaks that cycle but every day it seems to fall further into the third party/1% trap thanks to assholes like you.

[-] 5 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

“I am willing to make tough choices that may not be popular within my own party, because there can be no sacred cows for either party,” Obama wrote in a letter to Congress included in the budget, referring to the move’s repudiation of the Democrats’ traditional association with the programs of the Great Society and New Deal.

"The budget proposes to slash $400 billion from Medicare spending over ten years, and would introduce a new measure of the cost of living that would mean an effective cut of $130 billion from Social Security benefits during the same period.

"Cuts to these programs are overwhelmingly unpopular, with a Pew Research poll finding earlier this year that 87 percent of the population is opposed to cuts in Social Security, while 82 percent oppose cuts in Medicare.". Relevant to your forum-post and excerpted from :

The dark depths of your duopoly delusion are truly stupendous to behold !!! The mind boggles !! Look into a mirror darkly and slap yourself, this is OWS, pro-99%, anti-0.01% Corporotocracy, sheeeesh !

[-] -1 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 10 years ago

Nevermind that he's not going to do it, despite the hyperbolic hysteria from the nirvana "left" ~ can you say "negotiation tactic" ~ tell us what the RepubliCons have to offer?

Who does pursuing red herrings and propping up strawmen help?

Who's your man/woman "btw"?

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

McConnell is already saying "Why don't we do the modest changes we agree on and set these tax increases aside." That's how the GOP negotiate let's do the part we like and not give an inch on things we don't. They tried that with sequester by putting the defense money back in, Obama should not have put this on the table.

It's been awhile since I had chatted with shadz, he does seem awfully fixated on Obama and not so much on wealth inequality or even public funding of elections, prefers instead to find things to drive wedges between those concerned with those issues.

[-] -1 points by WSmith (2698) from Cornelius, OR 10 years ago

McTurtle is a human piece of shit! The abject hypocrisy he slung over this tape of his skulduggerous plotting on Ashly Judd is beyond gag-inducing.

...and she never EVER offers an alternative idea. Just bitches and complaints. With a fussy Latin coup de grace. So productive.

Unity People!

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

The tape was just a recording of folks being folks, I except my enemies to try to win.

The Social Security gambit would seem to have worked the GOP look more stubborn every day.

The 1% depend on the Greens and others to allow the young people a place to blow off steam without doing any real harm to their power, a few on here see that and are attempting to gather broad support for the things we agree on like Republicans are scum and the rich are too dam,n rich.

The ego whores, the Greens, see OWS as an opportunity to reinvigorate their party after so many Americans realized how stupid it is to vote for someone with no chance after Nader helping elect Bush. I see these people as the only actual threat OWS face the co-opting of the cause for political purpose instead of change for the people.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

Could be I've been wrong about you shadz maybe it's just Obama hating that you really care about, too bad, the 1% can always count on run away ego to keep them on top. Nader has it, you got it the Greens are stinkin in it, so the 1% are safe and comfy knowing that folks like you are there to help keep getting Republicans elected no matter how crazy or out of touch they are.

[-] 4 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

If you think Obomber is anything other than a 1%er and 0.01%er 'Parasite Class' tool or that the Democrap Party Machine is anything other than a Corporate Owned Front for a 'Two Faction, One Corporate War Party' - than you are really too locked inside 'The Duopoly Delusion' for your own good.

OWS exists and operates outside such mental straight-jackets. That is its raison d'etre and 'm.o.'. DemoCraps like the RepubliCons sold out the 99% a long time ago - IF indeed they ever represented them at all. Your knee jerk response to any criticism of Obummer must mean that your knees are permanently jerking on this forum.

Your belief that The Democratic Party Machine (as opposed to decent Democratic Party voters) will somehow deliver for The American 99% is optimistic in the extreme and seems to be in denial of The Corporate Bankster control of US politics. Sad truths can't be evaded. The 99% need new voices and 'Democracy' needs to be reclaimed in The U$A. You know - here's an idea : Occupy Wall Street !!!

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

I have consistently held the position that the Republican Party is evil and must be destroyed if American is to survive, voting for Democrats is the only viable way to do that in the time frame that is needed. I feel that anybody who cannot see the evil that is the Republican Party and the danger it represents is stupid as shit and can be of very little help going forward.

I feel that those who come here to bitch are ego whores and are also of no value.

[-] 3 points by shadz66 (19985) 10 years ago

Tell the Newtown parents there is no difference between a 30 round clip and a 7 then go help another Bush get elected.

[-] 0 points by OTP (-203) from Tampa, FL 10 years ago

The difference is a magazine change. If it makes you feel better to shorten the magazine then go for it. Honestly, a sawed off shotgun would be much more lethal.

11 children escaped while the shooter in Newtown was changing mags maybe we should ask their parents if the shooter should have had an even bigger clip so he wouldn't have needed to make that changeout.

You are keeping your rep intact, that comment could have come straight from the NRA website.

Obama is a tragic figure, victim of racism himself, who now "identifies with the aggressor" (an Uncle Tom who horrifyingly does the work of the old white slave-holders) and HATES powerlessness (his, and now ours). While priding himself on his "empathy," his dark side is winning out, and punishing the "powerless" who call him out....our badly needed whistleblowers. Manning should get the Peace Prize, not Obama. How "l984" is that?

Obama is just negotiating with GOP psychopaths, hoping people will pay attention. Don't get your pantyhose in a bunch.

But what are the GOP great ideas? What are the nirvana so called "left" great ideas?

Just like Kobe Bryant, if Obama had a strong team (in Congress) he could kick ass. But he doesn't, thanks to the fucking teabaggers that pouting-newbie Dems let in in 2010!

Sorry to remind the utopian whiners, but there is no perfection! No perfect politics, no perfect foreign policy, no perfect government, no perfect ANYTHING!!! There is only less bad and more bad!!

If you want to really bitch about our current state of affairs, DIRECT THE BITCHING AT YOURSELF!!! 300+ million Americans, and only a fraction bother to Vote. Through our negligence we allowed this mess, this corruption, this usurpation, this robbery, this disinformation, this inequality, this poverty, this homelessness, this shitty "health care" business, this fossil fuel dependence, this pollution, this global climate change and poisoning, THIS 1% TYRANNY and this Class War Loss to occur. Oh my! If you approach me like this I can imagine what you are saying to the Green trolls and such.

OK since it's just us dems in here, I will say Obama was never my guy, I wanted Hillary she was already pissed off and that's a good place to start with the GOP. Obama had voted and said stuff about the bankruptcy bill that had me worried that he liked bankers too much, I think I might have been right about that. Nevertheless the young people including my own son wanted Obama, and he gives a hell of a speech so what the hell, on a side note I was living with a "woman of color" (her words) when he was elected so I got to to take her to get registered and to ensure she voted then spend the evening with her as the reality of what she had helped make possible sank in, it was a great evening.

The biggest problem I see in Congress is Reid still thinks the GOP is sane.

[-] 1 points by OTP (-203) from Tampa, FL 10 years ago

The biggest problem in the entire scheme is people like you that still think Reid OR the GOP are still sane.

if the third party crap worked then the Greens would be growing instead of deader than a door-nail, what does work is exposing a Party that has gotten so trapped in dogma it can't escape its own insanity, this is OUR moment, we can do this, but we must be willing to set ego aside and tell the truth

[-] 2 points by OTP (-203) from Tampa, FL 10 years ago

Actually the registration numbers show the Dems and Reps are shrinking, and minor and independent numbers are growing. Its just not happening quick enough.

I dont endorse people who accept war. Plain and simple. We are doing that shit that happened in Boston every day. Every. Day.

I dont endorse people who think Monsanto should be mutating our food.

I dont endorse people who accept money from every fuckin corporation I hate. I mean, Obama took more money from BP than anyone. How the fuck, living in Florida and supporting occupy, could I vote for that?

And I certainly dont vote for any group that says it supports OCCUPY and then shuts the fuckin thing down.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 10 years ago

Actually the vote count showed the Green Party received fewer votes in 2004 than they did in 2000.

We all already know you don't do shit, so what's your point?
