This content is user submitted and not an official statement

NOW 1st of all I do not know about this group.

I KNOW I KNOW - from the R's ? - Are there any real R's left in office? BUT This May Be The Only Thing Brought Forward By A Current R That Has Merit For The People.

We need One Subject At A Time Legislation - to stop crap legislation being attached to legislation that "IS" going to be passed.

Examples of legislation that were attached as riders in the article. Well they could have been better in My Opinion - But that does not change the fact that "We Need OSTA".

Take a look - see what you think about the issue.

The Petition is accessed by clicking the link below.

DownsizeDC.org's "One Subject at a Time Act" (OSTA)

I'm Jim Babka, President of DownsizeDC.org, Inc.

My team created the "One Subject at a Time Act" (OSTA) to make you more powerful. Most legislation aims to control you, but OSTA will control Congress instead. It will . . . [Photo of Jim Babka]

Stop Congressional leaders from passing unwanted laws by attaching them to popular, but unrelated, bills. Require each bill to be about ONLY one subject, and to stand or fall entirely on its own merits. Make it easier for your elected officials to represent you by allowing them to vote on specific proposals, instead of on groups of bills containing divergent measures.

Create a de facto "line item veto" by putting only one measure under the President's pen at any one time. Give you expanded influence by making bad legislation more vulnerable to public opposition.

And OSTA has been introduced in Congress by Congressman Tom Marino (R) !

Please let me show you how you can gain these benefits, and more, with just a few keyboard strokes and mouse clicks . . .

I'll give you examples of bad laws that OSTA would have prevented. I'll show you how OSTA will be enforced. I'll also describe a strategy for getting OSTA passed.

You can use the form the at right whenever you're ready to ask your House Rep. and your two Senators to co-sponsor OSTA.

Doing so will also give you on-going access to our Educate the Powerful System, which you can use to issue future instructions to Congress on other issues. Plus, you'll get a free subscription to our email newsletter, "The Consent Chronicle." One national radio host called it the best newsletter he received. And, you'll be joining with tens of thousands of DC Downsizers to cause meaningful change.

OSTA was introduced for the first time during the last Congress. Nine members co-sponsored the bill, including Ron Paul. This time, we aim to do even better, even though five of those original co-sponsors are no longer in office. We maintain a current list of co-sponsors on our Background page.

Getting YOUR elected representatives to co-sponsor OSTA may be as easy as asking them, using the form at right.

Please be aware: Our Educate the Powerful System does NOT send emails to Congress. Instead, our system simultaneously fills out the respective webforms of your Representative and your two Senators. Our system saves you the time of having to visit three different web sites to fill out three different forms just to send one message. PLUS, after you've sent your first letter using our system, sending future letters can be as easy as a few keyboard strokes and mouse clicks.

This is a powerful tool which you can access right now, if you decide to support the "One Subject at a Time Act" by sending a letter to Congress.

Here's what the "One Subject at a Time Act" would do for YOU . . .

Right now, Congressional leaders routinely pass laws that lack majority support. They do this by combining unpopular bills with unrelated measures that your representatives are afraid to oppose. This subjects you to "legislation without representation," because most legislative proposals become laws without a specific vote from your representatives.

Do you want to end this abusive practice? The "One Subject at a Time Act" would do that. It's up to you to ask Congress to pass it. You can do that using the form at right.

You can just send our one sentence pre-written request to your representatives or, even better, personalize the message with your comments. It's that easy! Sending your letter to Congress will also give you on-going access to our Educate the Powerful System for contacting Congress PLUS our free email newsletter, the Consent Chronicle.

Here are two examples of specific bad bills that OSTA would have prevented from becoming laws . . .

EXAMPLE #1:

The REAL ID Act did something Americans have always rejected. It created a national identification system. This idea had so little support it couldn't even be brought to a vote in the Senate. But Congressional leaders got it passed anyway. They attached it to a bill Senators were afraid to oppose — the "Emergency, Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief." (May, 2005)

Senators were scared to defeat a bill that funded the troops, so the REAL ID Act became the law of the land.

Is this how you want to be governed? Will you submit to it or fight it? If you want to end the practice of combining unrelated bills, please use the form at right to ask your elected representatives to co-sponsor OSTA.

EXAMPLE #2:

The Senate Majority Leader believed that gambling was immoral. So he promoted a bill to outlaw online poker. But he lacked the votes to get it passed, so, mere hours before the vote, he attached his unwanted legislation to a Port Security bill that most in Congress favored. The result . . .

Online gambling was outlawed, and a whole industry was destroyed in the blink of an eye!

OSTA would prevent such outrages by requiring that . . .

Each bill must be only one subject. The courts must view any legislation passed in violation of this requirement to be null and void. This makes OSTA uniquely powerful, because most laws and rules that aim to control Congress, including the Constitution, have no enforcement mechanism. But OSTA has an enforcement mechanism!

You can take a big step toward passing OSTA by using the form at right to ask your elected representatives to sponsor this bill.

But there's more. OSTA also has other powerful provisions . . .

Under OSTA politicians will no longer be able to hide the true subjects of their bills behind propagandistic titles such as the "PATRIOT Act," the "Protect America Act," or the "No Child Left Behind Act." No one wants to be accused of voting against patriotism, or protecting America, or of wanting to leave children behind. But none of those titles actually describes the subjects of those bills. Therefore . . .

OSTA requires that all titles describe what a bill will actually do, so that Congress and the public can know what the "one subject" is. Good examples of proper titles include those we have used for our Downsize DC Agenda proposals, which we encourage you to also investigate. In addition to the properly named "One Subject at a Time Act," we also have the "Read the Bills Act," and the "Write the Laws Act."

This is your chance. By using the form at right, you can join with tens of thousands of DC Downsizers to cause real social change. OSTA will . . .

  • Make bills shorter and easier to understand.
  • Replace propagandistic titles with descriptive names.
  • Require that all new laws are favored by a real Congressional majority.
  • Render bills that violate these requirements unenforceable.
  • Restrain the Congressional leadership.
  • Empower your elected officials to represent you responsibly.
  • Make it easier for public pressure — which you can exert through our Educate the Powerful System — to defeat bad bills.

These are the reasons this bill has become popular with people like Ron Paul.

Use the form at right to send your elected representatives a letter about this issue. It's easy! Your position . . .

  • Will be counted by each Congressional office.
  • Will educate the Congressional staffer who reads it.
  • May be passed up the chain of command.
  • May receive a reply (many DC Downsizers get them). If you receive such a letter, please share it with us at Comments@DownsizeDC.org.

Please send your letter now.

You'll gain access to our Educate the Powerful System and our free email newsletter, the Consent Chronicle. I hope you'll decide to join the ranks of DC Downsizers.

What's left to say? Do you wonder how we'll get OSTA passed? The next step depends on what you do now . . .

Many members of Congress will like OSTA, because they dislike voting for packaged bills. But OSTA may not come to their attention unless you send them a letter using the form at right.

Some members of Congress become co-sponsors, because they're hear about the praise other co-sponsors have received. The Downsize DC Army is responsible for this, but the only way you can join the Downsize DC Army is by sending a letter to Congress using the form at right.

Some members of Congress will only do the right thing if they're pressured to do it. You may feel like your voice has no influence. You're wrong. No one snowflake can make an avalanche, but every avalanche is made up of nothing but snowflakes. If you want Congress to feel an avalanche of pressure, then you must be an active snowflake and do your small part. It will only take a few keyboard strokes and mouse clicks using the form at right.

There are many other things we're doing to pass OSTA. But you won't be able to follow them UNLESS you subscribe to the Consent Chronicle. The price for that is sending a letter to Congress using the form at right.

If you want, you can read this very brief bill, here.

Please execute those powerful keyboard strokes and mouseclicks using the form at right!

Hello DKA, Signed. Critical issue. Illegitimate USG unfixable without OSTA.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Always knew you had a good head on your shoulders. Besides Move To Amend = the removal of Corp(se)oRAT personhood - OSTA may well be the 2nd or 3rd largest issue to tackle - IMO.

Nearing 300,000 signatures on the Motion to Amend petition

Our goal for 2013 is to reach 500,000 signatures on our petition, but we can’t let this moment pass without notice. At the time of this writing, we are just 278 signatures from the 300,000 mark.

You helped us get this far, for which we are grateful; will you help us push it over this milestone?

We got this far with zero coverage from "mainstream" media. In order for us to succeed in our overall mission, we need to keep growing and keep building the foundation for reform by bringing together people of all communities everywhere. Signing the Motion to Amend is the first step on the road to a flourishing democracy and reigning in corporate power.

Will you resolve to help us get those needed signatures to bring us to 300,000 signatures?

We encourage you to try the following:

Send an email to your list, urging your friends to join Move to Amend -- include this link: http://movetoamend.nationbuilder.com/petition Post the petition link on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ Download the petition and gather signatures at events, at work, or in your daily activities Let everyone know they can sign by text: text SIGN to 1-707-656-4019

And then watch the number of signatures rise here!

Our consistent success proves that most Americans share the noble principles set forth in our founding documents, but our elected officials ignore the will of the people they are supposed to represent in favor of their corporate donors.

Because the mainstream media ignores the growing democracy movement, it’s up to each of us to spread the word about the Motion to Amend. And, to keep spreading it until we reach our ultimate goal!

Let’s do our best to top the 300,000 mark over the 24 hours.

With respect,

Ashley Sanders, Daniel Lee, David Cobb, Egberto Willies, George Friday, Jerome Scott, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Laura Bonham, Maria Agosto, Nancy Price, Pam Brown, Richard Monje

Move to Amend National Leadership Team

PS -- Speaking of "almost there" -- we just need to raise $3,061 by Monday to succeed in meeting our goal for our "Amendment Broadcast Campaign". We've already raised $26,939! If you haven't yet chipped in, please do so now!

PPS -- Don't miss Move to Amend Reports tonight at 5pm Pacific/8pm Eastern. Move to Amend Reports is our online weekly radio program. This week we'll be speaking with Johnny Mathias of Color of Change about their campaign for a Constitutional right to vote, and Ben Manski of Liberty Tree about this summer's most exciting conference: The Democracy Convention, taking place in Madison WI in August. This is a call-in show so bring your questions and comments: 646-652-2345.

MOVE TO AMEND

PO Box 610, Eureka CA 95502 | (707) 269-0984 | www.MoveToAmend.org

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

Nice, but why care about signatures? They won't change a thing. Go out and protest and then you'll be visible.

Let’s do our best to top the 300,000 mark over the 24 hours.

Sounds like you're playing Donkey Kong, trying to rack up a big score!

Stop playing games and get those people out screaming in the streets!

Good luck with this one, people.

Us southern homies are excluded from signing, but solidarity as always.

Thx - OSTA is so crucial to cleaning up legislation - well - I expect real fireworks if this starts getting real support.

I think the only way we are going to get lasting satisfaction against corpoRATe influence, is to put trade sanctions on them. Stop buying their shit, and let everyone know why they should stop buying their shit.

The ultimate power rests with consumers, in our consumer-driven economies.

Just have to get that message out there to the rabid consumers.

i thought most of the money was with the rich already

[-] 1 points by Builder (4202) 10 years ago

It's paper only, MattLHolck.

True worth is found in personal relationships and cameraderie.

You won't live long without those.

Let's never let them take those away, through fear and misinformation.

if we don't trade with the corps,

their money isn't worth anything but the property already is

comic con is a nightmare happening in 2 weeks

I think someone wants to meet there

but everytime I go, it ends be a hassle not worth my time

Level the playing field for small business to compete - be prosperous - and I think many would just naturally go there - to feel clean again.

[-] 0 points by Builder (4202) 10 years ago

I'm not backward in using the old fear tactics.

The chant here is all about planned population control.

People in my social group are now collecting and filtering their own rainwater, brushing their teeth with bicarb soda, growing their own sprouts and leafy greens, and buying bio-dynamic meat and poultry.

The markets will either cotton on, or go broke.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Well lets hope they take a dive and in the restructuring - major changes can be made - just for plain necessity.

[-] 2 points by Builder (4202) 10 years ago

When you consider the massive amounts of cash involved in market research and marketing products, I'm thinking that even a hint of deception in labelling is going to be a negative with the purchasing public.

Those who don't care what they are eating can still choose to poison themselves. It's not like they aren't being informed about it.

I'm taking a magnifying glass shopping with me these days. Looking into making up a heap of stickers to label products that don't measure up.

Kind of a geurilla action to inform others.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Be interesting what kind of reaction you get. No not really the grocer will get upset - definitely.

[-] 1 points by Builder (4202) 10 years ago

Already seeing market fallout with one of our most popular cereal makers, Kellogs. It's not like they can go on hiding what's in their frontline products.

I see Nescafe (Nestle) coffee marked down and still not selling. Fair-Trade organic is selling out, on the other end of the price scale.

I like it. I like it a lot.

What price health? Have you priced cancer lately? These are memes I'm pushing relentlessly, and it's catching on.

What price health? Have you priced cancer lately? These are memes I'm pushing relentlessly, and it's catching on.

Absolutely. American produce is becoming more suspect by the day. Which is good because it will be market pressure more than anything else that will push fast change.

The only safe thing to do with GE and GMO grains is distillation into methanol for fuel. Simple logic.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Ummm I'm thinking destroy the seeds and grow real crops - that way we don't end up with a farmers field invaded by wheat that was never released ( never authorized ). Seven years after it was refused for use.

[-] 2 points by Builder (4202) 10 years ago

It's out there already. Though burning it off might work.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Though burning it off might work.

More of the seed would be killed that way - then to harvest it and process for ethanol - due to the seed left in the field after harvest.

I'm seeing fields covered in popcorn. :-)

[-] 1 points by forourfutures (393) 10 years ago

Downsize DC is okay. They propose good mechanisms for legislative actions.

Not quite repub's, not dems, not libtards, just common sense stuff.

Mind you, they ARE stuck in the box, but their simple mechanistic actions are very often deserving of all of our support just to limit the "corporate lobby streamlining effect" we've been seeing as our nation gets hijacked.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Thx - OSTA is good common sense.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 10 years ago

"Single subject voting" without an acronym would probably sell the idea better in name "OSTA"

[-] 1 points by forourfutures (393) 10 years ago

I'd agree to that. Originally it was "One subject at a time", OSTA does not compute as an acronym.
