Forum Post: Occupy the 1% in 2012

Posted 12 years ago on Feb. 27, 2012, 6:10 a.m. EST by GildasSapiens (266)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

The 1% live in a different world from the rest of us. They inhabit exclusive neighborhoods; travel in private limousines, helicopters, jets, yachts, etc.; shop in exclusive boutiques, delicatessens, galleries, etc.; eat at exclusive restaurants; attend exclusive schools, colleges, benefits, fundraisers, parties, balls, etc.; belong to exclusive clubs, societies, etc.; have access to exclusive & inside investing information & business & employment opportunities; have privileged access to lawmakers, govt. officials, judges, etc.; & enjoy many other exclusive & privileged benefits not available to the 99%.

All the exclusivity & privilege that characterizes the 1%'s world, from their earliest, formative years, leads them to regard themselves as innately superior to us, the 99%, &, as with all supremacists, breeds in them contemptuous, callous, & sociopathic attitudes towards the "other" (i.e. us, the 99%).

For the Occupy Movement to undermine & dismantle the plutocratic & oligarchic vindictive kleptonomy that the 1% are increasingly imposing on the 99%, & the exclusive, self-serving socialism that they've constructed for themselves, we must take the protests to the 1% & Occupy their world. We need to burst the bubble of exclusivity & privilege that the 1% inhabit, destroy their illusions of separateness, & shatter their (& their families') sense of security.

My first paragraph, above, lists many of the physical location types that we need to target to Occupy the 1%. Flashmobs & guerrilla protest tactics ( http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message1533611/pg1 ) should be our primary methods. Nonviolence must be our guiding principle.

this is a great idea.. GildasSapiens ;)

how many 1% er's do we see coming here .. and claiming that poverty in America does not exist ... or if it does it's because of their own fault/s ?

I think we should focus on letting them see poverty... display pictures and stat's of the homeless & impoverished over & over again ... bring the images into their lives ... so much that they won't forget it ....

Movements need distinct targets to galvanize & motivate supporters.

From the beginning, the Occupy Movement has aspired to represent the 99%, therefore the natural targets of the Movement are the members of the 1% & their lifestyles.

We should aim to disrupt & subvert their lives in proportion to the extent that their greed, selfishness & irresponsibility have disrupted & subverted the lives of members of the 99% (i.e. "An eye for en eye" or "You fck with us & we'll fck with you!").

As well as images & stats of poverty, destitution & homelessness, we need to bombard the 1% with images, stats, hard-hitting slogans, etc., relating to the environmental devastation, pollution, toxic waste, ill-health, deaths, etc., their greed has caused.

We must make it clear to the 1% (including their families) that we blame them for all the ills of the world, we're not going to take it any more, & we're not going to let them off the hook 'til they've paid to repair all the damage they've caused, & 'til the financial, economic, political, media, & social systems have been revamped to exclude & prevent bias.

It's not about the one percent - Occupy is about us and the type of people we are - we are compassionate - show why you are compassionate - what are your fears, who do you care about? The one percent is a distraction. The true cause here is that there are enough of us to overwhelm their ideals. Show the world why we stand for good. Don't get lost in any discourse or solutions. Your ideals matter more to this movement than anything else. Because you are everything that Wall Street is not. You are the path of righteousness and truth.

You don't seem to know who we're up against.

Compassion, righteousness, truth mean nothing to compassionless, predatory cheats, fraudsters & thieves.

The 1% are psychopaths, without conscience or humanity, their only "ideals" are greed & control, & they must be dealt with accordingly!

@ 'GS' : I appreciate your 'forum-post' but please be advised that re. your link, it isn't working (ie.appearing in blue) because your parentheses are too close and interfering with the URL . You need to leave a sp a ce between the fist and last URL address and the brackets. Thanx.

Also, re. "the 1% ... Psychopaths", please refect upon this rather excellent and revealing documentary :

The point is not to make sure the one percent can't have it's to make sure that others don't suffer - I can't stress this enough. Anger is the correct emotion but it suddenly occurred to me it's not who we are. Occupy is full of compassionate people who care about the fate of the world and others - we need them to know that this is our cause. Not to attack them - but to prevent suffering. Tell people why you are afraid - what you are worried about and who you care about. We are not a self-serving bunch - this movement is full of sensitive people who want to help everyone else - don't let them see only anger the solutions don't matter, only why you are involved does - please don't lose hope or vision.

For me it's because I don't want us to become like these photos of elderly who live in cages in Hong-Kong. Countries where the 1% have all the wealth are not pleasant places. I don't want us to become like this... in Hong Kong the poor rent cages for most of their monthly salary many of our countries companies off-shore their products to Chinese factories and don't mind partnering with regimes that don't pay them enough to live an even slightly dignified existence or who do terrible things to their people... I am not jealous - I am heart-broken and scared of what the world and America will turn into http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.02.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.04.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.05.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.07.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.10.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.11.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.13.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.15.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.13.jpg http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/01/05/cages/lg.01.jpg

Unless we take the protests to the 1% - right in their faces - they'll continue to push the US, the UK & the entire Western world towards the Hong Kong model (& even beyond, if they're not stopped!).

The West's 1% don't give a damn about encampments & protests in parks, squares & other public spaces (i.e. the 99%'s spaces) - they don't inhabit the 99%'s world. Unlike in Tunisia or Egypt, the West's 1% can move at will across the globe, so we've got to Occupy them wherever & whenever we find them!

Are you bothered by photos like these - do you feel a pull inside yourself to do something to prevent it. Do you feel a duty to end suffering in the world? We are not the one percent neither are you technically - but do you care - because the cause takes sympathizers (as long as they have compassion) - so do u? Occupy is about people who are unwilling to turn their backs on suffering no matter what they have. You can have money and not hurt people with it or not step on others to get it. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRf8Nr_Mm4FOGa2Od4UpMAW4aOwnNcX10AKlgTHUMwfSJziUdl47g - will a one percent guy join the cause to end things like this and to make sure his money wasn't part of it?
