Metropolis 1927

I think "Metropolis" is VERY relevant to our time. In the movie, the 1% live the good life, while the 99% are basically their slaves.

That is basically the direction this country was headed in... until OWS appeared on thse scene and said: "We're mad as hell and we're NOT going to take it anymore!"

The future. Metropolis is a wonderful city, high above the ground its towers stand. The people prosper, the economy is flourishing, the suspended streets are busy. But Metropolis also has a great secret, so hidden that not even Freder Fredersen, son of founder Joh Fredersen knows about it. He is spending his free time in the Eternal Gardens, when suddenly a woman shows up, with what looks like a class of children. They're from the City of Workers, in the depth, Freder learns. "These are your brothers", she tells the children, before she is forced to leave. Freder is so intrigued he follows them into the depth and doesn't like what he sees. The workers are exploited, they must do labor like robots. Freder tries to convince his father to change, while the woman tries to keep workers' morale high by predicting a man will stand up that will mediate. Someone that will use both hands and head, someone that will be the heart.

It's a great film -- I'm glad someone besides myself ahs seen it -- at least the original which I think is still far and away the best.

Actually, I thnk Metropolis was a great commentary on it's own time and the preceding era of the Industrial Revolution. And I recommend highly that people watch it, for the message as well as for the art.

With taht said, I think we are in much the same place now as then, although in a very different way; the manufacturing jobs being gone and our slavery being either at a desk or standing at a register in some starvation-wage retail store.

I guess my short answer is, yes, I do see it as relevant to our times -- but then, all great art is relevant to all times, isn't it?

Yes, it is. I agree with you.

It's not often I agree with you, MVSN, but I do think "Metropolis" is VERY relevant to our time. In the movie, the 1% live the good life, while the 99% are basically their slaves.

I've never seen it, but it looks pretty good. Is it silent??

The original is silent -- with a great score, but they did a remake of it sometime in the latge 80s or early 90s. From what I herd they stayed pretty faithful to the original, but I haven't seen it so I can't say for sure.
