Forum Post: Manipulation of the 99 percent - Marketing and Creating "Needs" That We Wouldn't Have Otherwise

OWS was originally inspired by a periodical called "Adbusters"

What is at the heart of their message? Marketing creates demands that we would not have otherwise. Omnipresent advertising tells us that we need things that aren't really useful or that will make us fat, consume more resources, and don't have any real value. Sure, we ought to have the freedom to choose. But we also need the common sense - and the education to know that this choice is beyond our means, unnecessary, or not worth putting on credit.

This is essentially a conservative message that frugal, ordinary people everywhere instinctively understand. But it's a message that multinationals are constantly trying to get us to ignore by pushing variations of goods that we don't really need.
