The RW psychopaths, insurgents and the John Birch Society were busy labeling, postering and dog whistling to their ignorant - zombie parishioners and followers, that JFK was guilty of "Treason." And it seemed to shake the crazy cage ~ where these holdover confederates from the Civil War, Loyalists from the Revolution, and authoritarians who just can't deal with Democracy live ~ just enough to get some schmuck to shoot at the POTUS in Dallas, in 1963, 50 years ago today.
It's exactly the same today, but much worse, thankfully we have a better Secret Service today. We have a POTUS who would be shot today by masses of insane brainwashed followers because he is trying to enact progress and catch up with the rest of the world.
And the ONE thing that could bring it all to a civilized end ~ VOTING ~ we avoid & abandon like a disease. Wake The Fuck Up PEOPLE! Wake up for JFK!!!

I think Obama is safe. By him "enact[ing] progress," do you mean cutting social security, escalating the drone wars and continuing the secret TPP negotiations?
Why would you think our first black POTUS "is safe" when it is common knowledge that the racist RW crazies & cults have been going bonkers with the death threats and deadly weapons and ammo stockpiling since his election?
Obama has not cut SS, but the entire 1%-GOP Cult, Tea Baggers, Libertarians, those in the 1%, want to privatize SS so they can redistribute that giant tranche of the public's money to the 1% where they think all wealth rightfully belongs. They don't believe in public/social services, or democracy, they want their Kings back. Why don't you know this?
Unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, drones, have been in use since WW1. Drones were designed to spare lives. You send a drone behind enemy lines and it is shot down, a soldier's or many soldiers' lives are spared. Guns right here at home, guns in America, have killed more people than all our wars combined. Drones save and spare lives. Hopefully, someday, we will fight all our stupid wars with just drones, alone. If you want to save lives, get rid of the guns, quit starting wars, and quit electing RepubliCon assholes like Bush-Cheney who lied us into two unnecessary wars. Which Obama is trying to get us out of. But this can't be news to you either, this is also common knowledge.
In the world, the one on planet earth, there are a bunch of countries and business interests, who do business with each other, and sometimes have meetings to make all sorts of dirty secret deals, TPP is one of them, and we are one of the countries. Obama does not control this world, but it could be said that Big Biz does, because we have let it. This too is common knowledge, and class is over.
Of course if we had all Voted in the 2010 election and given Obama a congress that would work with him for the country, after the carnage Bush-Cheney and the Cons left the country in, he could have made many more progressive achievements, but he still managed to make quite a few, in spite of this saboteur and hostage taking 1%-GOP Congress. Again, all over the news.

Willy, how many times must folks be reminded that this country is NOT a democracy? I even heard david brooks state that this evening on PBS Newshour. We are a REPUBLIC. There have been 4 presidential elections in our history that should serve to remind you of that, especially since the last time it happened it gave us a POTUS that trampled our liberties and privacy like no other up until that time (save some wartime actions taken by Abe), One can argue about his 2nd act that is serving now is as bad or worse. 44 has certainly not been much for civil rights.

In the early days of this country, James Madison basically created a distinction that didn't exist before this, and this was in 1787. It used to be, if you look at dictionaries pre 1787, the words democracy and republic were interchangeable. The Roman republic was referred to as a democracy, the Greek democracy was refereed to as a republic. The words were interchanged.
["How Democratic Is the American Constitution?" by Robert A. Dahl.] And Madison in 1834 said, you know, after all these years, we can, you can use the words interchangeably. And that was about the time that the Democratic Republican party that Jefferson created dropped the word "republican" from its name. And that was about the time that Madison, who was one of the early founders of the Democratic Republican party started again using the word democracy.
So from the founding or in the mid 1780s until the mid 1830s we referred to America as a Republic. From the 1830s until the modern era we referred to it as a democracy, but then when Joe McArthur came along he started, he and some of his advisors, and Karl Rove really got on this big time, said, "wait a minute, calling this a democracy sounds too much like the Democratic Party. We should call it a Republic because that sounds more like the Republican Party." And so the talking point on 24/365/every-city right wing hate-lie radio has been, and Limbaugh's been pushing this for 20 years now, has been that we don't live in a democracy, we live in a republic, and that you shouldn't call it a democracy, it's a republic. And the reason why is because they like the word republic because it sounds like republican and they hate the word democracy because it sounds like democratic [and also they hate democracy, they want their Kings back]. And ... that's the bottom line, we live in a democratic republic. Say hello to Rush.
Geez, never thought about the political parties names in this context. Might be because I am an independent, as opposed to a rabid partisan, like you.
BUT, we DO NOT directly elect our Potus and for most of our history we did not elect our senators. As was pointed out in this thread, we have had 4 presidents that did not garner the majority of "our": votes. So, I guess we are a semi-democratic republic? I mean, most elections are determined by our votes, but not the big dog.
And of course, til Reid pulled the pin on the grenade he will fall on in a couple years, the senate was not run democratically, either. The Majority DID NOT rule. I so look forward to Nov 2014
