Forum Post: I wish the OWS would get more involved instead of just taking up space

Today on NPR, I heard someone participating in the OWS movement; comment that OWS should not get involved in next year’s elections. What is that about? How is this movement going to change anything if it doesn't do it from the inside? I would like to see OWS identify a few key planks that the OWS movement can focus on...such as: tax reform, political reform (term limits for congress), corporate campaign finance reform etc... and get some candidates into the running so we can start to change things from within.

I'm Canadian. To an extent I view this from outside. Mainstreaming OWS is a mistake. Making it mainstream, with defined, and necessarily limited objectives, invites those who would profit. Madison Avenue, if that phrase is still current, would be happy to put "Endorsed by OWS" on cereal boxes and laundry soap. OWS is an expression of rage. That is its power. Be undefined, be organic. Rage against the machine.

Sounds good to me, put pressure on Obama2012. I think real change will happen when other countries finally get fed up with us and just boycott us.

The elections are like choosing between two different kinds of soap, both of which are owned by the same manufacturer. OWS wants much bigger changes than merely who or which party of the 1% is in power in a state owned lock stock and barrel by the 1%. The changes that OWS wants will take at least years, probably decades and perhaps several lifetimes. The transition from feudalism to capitalism after all took 1000 years, but that is the kind of transition OWS is talking about and from that perspective, elections are pretty trivial.

OWS is what ALL of us decide to do to create a better world...whether it is developing social programs to take care of our community, raising awareness about inequalities and issues, or building a solution-oriented global open-source network...whether it is creating art, cleaning up neighborhoods, simply starting discussions in your home, school, office or community...
