'The 99%' is a phantasm created by a society that is obsessed with what can be quantified and thereby contained. People are not units of currency. Infinity cannot be measured.
Yes, it is a euphemism or an analogy meant to illustrate the vastness of the gulf in equality in the world today. 400 people claiming ownership of 50% of the wealth is a staggering idea. These are not hard and immutable values, just representations of trends. Trends most sane people see, feel, and understand.
All language is short-forms and approximations, this is the best we can do. In much the same way as all maps are inaccurate and missing things, as having a map the exact same size as the world is just really not useful to us. And it don't fit in my pocket.
Yes, clearly, Language is an imperfect system of communication that can only express certain concepts in a mediated fashion. However, this does not, in my estimation, vindicate the notion of the 99% from playing into the hands of technocrats. The absence of "equality" is a symptom, not a cause.
