I'm watching the pbs special about foreclosed or abandoned homes dragging down the entire community. In some cases, apparently they aren't even sure who owns it because the financing was sold. One simple tactic that could be used is to form a neighborhood or community organization, (Occupy Atlanta, Occupy Stockon) sue the property owner (get the name that is the record owner and use that) for nuisance, for allowing the home to be abandoned and detrimental to the community. Many of the owners won't show up. Ask for a judgment in the amount of the fair market value of the home. Foreclose, now you own the home. Rent it out to local residents at a fair rent, and have the community group go in and clean it up before listing it.

That's actually an awesome idea. Its intriguing in the very least.

Abandoned homes ARE detrimental to the community. They make the community look run down, which depresses everyone's home values and brings the whole neighborhood down as a result.

I think soon we will see some off-shoot of Occupy legally obtain a building or a plot of land and start a community center like what we have seen various cities attempt to do. Except there will be one that the police CAN'T tear down. I look forward to that day :)
