Here, Here! As an OWS activist I applaud this sentiment. OWS needs to make it clear to everyone, including opponents of OWS that we stand as opposed to the reactionary policies of the Democratic Party and their agents as we do to the Republicans. In many ways the Democratic Party is much more dangerous to our movement than is the Republican Party. It's the Democratic Party, after all that is in control of the executive branch. More broadly, the Democratic Party has been the grave yard of every mass movement since the days of the Populists more than 100 years ago. Let us work, hope and pray that it does not become the grave yard of OWS! We don't need politicians to build a better society. The only solution is world revolution. Solidarity forever!

I'm not really an OWSer, just too old and my knees are too bad to go out in the streets, but you know I always did get this impression about OWS, and I think most of the public does too. You're doing fine on that count in my opinion. Never mind the trolls who want to hijack your movement and make it serve mainstream electoral politics. The Reps would love nothing more than to use it as a tool against the Dems and vice-versa. Keep that in mind, and don't play those games.

[-] 3 points by RedJazz43 (2757) 12 years ago

I have seen many people in wheel chairs at OWS. A couple of weeks ago Pete Seger, at the age of 92 and with cains, walked 30 blocks from Symphony Space to Columbus Circle in support of OWS. I'm not pointing this out to make you feel bad, but I think even the most infirm person could probably take a couple of hours out of their life to actually learn something about OWS directly. Then go home and look in a mirror to find your local leader. Start a GA in your neigborhood, on your block or at your nursing home.

If we are really going to remake society there should be a GA in every nursing home, every school, every block, every drug rehabilitation center, every hospital, every jail, every prison, every military barracks, every mental institution, everywhere! We are all leaders! Solidarity forever!

[-] 3 points by Edgewaters (912) 12 years ago

Well I suppose so ... now you've shamed me. But I still have some excuses up my sleeve! Namely, we don't have an OWS here and I'm no organizer, not a people person really. Bit of a shut-in to be honest. Nevertheless, now that I've been chastised, if we had one here I'd at least visit, for sure.

[-] 2 points by RedJazz43 (2757) 12 years ago

Even shut ins (especially shut ins) have visitors. And nobody is an organizer. On the other hand everybody is. Look at all the so-called "professional" organizers in all the nonprofit organizations and labor unions. They are pathetic. In the last two months the amateurs in OWS did more organizing than those "professionals" did in the last two decades.

Talk to your viisitors. Sounds to me like you have a captive audience which any organizer would love. If you're really having a problem go to the website of the occupation nearest you. Unless you live in a really isolated place I suspect there is an occupation or at least a GA within 200 miles of you. Probably less. Ask them to send somebody to help you for a few hours or more if they can spare it. I'm sure they'd love to.

What a sweet word: OWSer. I loved it. I got wings. OWS, it reminds me Athene, goddess of wisdom.

True. The democratic party uses its appeal to progressive causes to keep the rabble in line. If the democratic party has shown to be secretly in support of the corporate interests, then it's no wonder the country has become even more so right wing. All the institutions remain intact and shielded under democratic control.

If the corporate elite can manage to find a way to use the democratic party to their advantage, then that is a threat to this movement. Too many people won't join us if they feel the democrats will help them out. After all, Clinton helped institute NAFTA after the democrats fought against it under Reagan.

Most of the big city mayors who are trying to shut down our movement tend to be democrats. Obama can show a modicum of support all he wants, but I haven't seen him lend a hand in trying to deter the police. Unless he can find a way to show a little bit of respect on our part, he needs to go.

[-] 1 points by RedJazz43 (2757) 12 years ago

The Democratic Party makes no secret of the fact that it supports what it calls "free enterprise." That's one of it's most basic tenets. But it also throws around a few populist slogans, as well as outright lies about how it has been in the forefront of social progress, which is enough, without any mass movement to pull them in another direction, for most people to keep supporting it.

The corporate elite have not "found their way" into the Democratic Party. They've always been there. That is something of a secret, or at least not widely advertised, though the Democratic Party's basic commitment to "free enterprise' is.

I don't see OWS having much influence in or power over the 2012 Presidential race, except to the extent that I think it will influence both parties to move in its direction, though undoubtedly at different rates and to different degrees. But meanwhile, our job is to build our movement, not worry about who the two parties of the 1% are choosing for President.

What this guy said^

[-] 1 points by oreoobama (49) 12 years ago

OWS influence will be the blood on the streets and it will be attributed to the thugs working for Obama, as he's the sitting prez, calling out the thugs

If your as old as me, then you remember the bonus-boyz of 1932, and they're doing during a depression exactly what the kids are now, sleeping in tents near the status-quo, hoover-villes everywhere, and this drives them nuts, and they will kill the kids, and the hatred will spill back to Obama's re-election,

But sadly in this case, the prez will be handed to the pug's

My point is that OWS will have GREAT influence on 2012 election cycle,

Lastly, MENCKEN in 1928 said "The diff between pugs and dems is the differnce between wolves and foxes, they'll both clean you to the bone"

Malcolm-X in 1962 said DEM&PUG same

NAder is 80's said PUG&DEM exactly the same and owned

TODAY we have DNC&OBAMA getting more banker/wall-st money than the pug's, so who is the MORE co-opted?

If one were to follow OWS rhetoric about the 1% then intellectually the republicans are the better team, sad times indeed.

FUCK BOTH PARTYS - they're the same

World revolution okay. World government is not okay, unless some how that was really what the people want. Right now world government is something the elitists want to own and control.

Don't fall for Obama's charming "PERSONA". The true face of Barack Obama is definitely NOT that of a man of compassion :

"OBAMA HAS GRANTED FEWER REQUESTS FOR CLEMENCY THAN ANY PRESIDENT IN THE LAST CENTURY, even considering that most issue a batch of pardons just before they leave office. As of Nov. 21, he has given 22 pardons and commuted one sentence. Those represent about 0.3 percent of the petitions for clemency he has received.

In contrast, George W. Bush gave 189 pardons and 11 commutations, approving 1.8 percent of the petitions for clemency he received. Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush granted clemency at an even higher rate, in 5 to 6 percent of cases. Clinton issued 396 pardons and 61 commutations, while Bush I gave 74 pardons and three commutations. What's more, Obama has pardoned 10 drug offenders; Bush II pardoned 36 and commuted the sentences of eight. (Bush’s most notorious commutation was that of Lewis “Scooter” Libby, which he issued just before the former White House aide had to start serving a 30-month sentence for lying to a federal judge.)"
