Of course, YOU don’t have to DO anything to let maniacs like this control our country – and women’s bodies – just don’t vote for their opponents.
Especially if you are a spineless guy. It ain’t gonna be you pregnant.

Missouri Rep. Todd Akin defended his staunch anti-abortion platform on Sunday by questioning whether it's possible for a woman to become pregnant after a rape, reports CBS News. Akin was asked to address his "no exceptions" policy on abortion, specifically why he opposes abortion even when the pregnancy is the result of rape. Speaking in an interview to KTVI-TV:

Akin said pregnancy from rape is "really rare", and implied that the female re productive system is able to block conception from an unwanted pregnancy”.
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," he said. "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

The Los Angeles Times reports that a 1996 study by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology estimated that 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. Five percent of victims age 12 to 45 will become pregnant. Akin recently became the newly-minted GOP Senate nominee in Missouri, going up against incumbant Sen. Claire McCaskill. After hearing Akin's comments, McCaskill tweeted, "As a woman & former prosecutor who handled 100s of rape cases, I'm stunned by Rep Akin's comments about rape victims." McCaskill emailed a further statement to the Los Angeles Times saying "It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape. The ideas that Todd Akin has expressed about the serious crime of rape and the impact on its victims are offensive."

Aiken: “I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue," he said. "But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action.” The Washington Post reports that this is not an area that the Missouri GOP would want Akin to bring into focus. A debate about "legitimate rape" and the female reproductive system would likely take the focus off of McCaskill and President Obama. This is not Akin's first wander into controversial territory about rape. Talking Points Memo reports that Akin once voted for a voted for an anti-marital-rape law, but only after questioning whether it would allow women to use accusations of rape as a "tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband.”

I think the GOP leadership should be ashamed to even ask someone selected by their party members to step down, I think Akins is a fine example of the GOP.

They find sentencing confusing too.

You would have thought they might have learned by now.

But no, learning isn't what they get paid for.

What they get paid for can't be anything good.

Tea Partyiers HATE people who who have certain kinds of qualities or circumstances in their lives.A rape victim would be a type of person branded with the ultimate TP dismissive epithet-Loser.In fact,TP's consider anyone who is a victim of violent crime a Loser who should be shunned by the community and not helped in any way. Also;elderly citizens in poverty and abandonned by family;illegal immigrants, victims of serious diseases;people who have lost their jobs for any reason, struggling black people;legal immigrants who are not doctors and don't speak english well, people who cannot pay their student loans because of the economic crash that occurred while they were still in college-in short,Libertarians and TP's have nothing but scorn and hatred for anyone who has failed in any way or who has experienced any kind of misfortune. They seem to hate people who have failed in life because they never had a chance more than all others. They believe in their own perfection, infallibility, and superiority completely. To me this indicates deep seated psychological pathology.

I agree completely. They have been falling off a cliff, and now they realize it, but they can't stop falling as we now are witnessing. Literally they are self destructing before our eyes. They can NOT recover!

Also, I agree, they will set them back so hard that they the Repelicans may very well be finished. Look for a third party to emerge in 2016 and garner enough votes to make Repelicans irrelevant.

Legislating morality has been mistake for decades now. Repelicans apparently didn't get that memo in their feverish attempt to tell people what they may or may do in private. They are arrogant and finally they exposed for their hypocrisy.

Let freedom RING!!! I mean really RING!!!

no anti rape comments?

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

I think republican views on "legitimate rape" are rooted in religious right dogma that only hussies are raped. She must have done something to encourage the rapist. It's disgusting.

And let's not forget that Paul Ryan co sponsored a "personhood amendment" that would prevent a women from aborting a rapists baby.

equally disgusting.

Condemnation of the entire republican party because one person says something stupid is the same as condemnation of OWS because one person says something stupid.

Makes perfect sense to me don't you think?

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

Akin position (which he hasn't changed) is no abortion for rape victims. That is repub party policy. It is in the platform. Repubs are screaming at Akin but not because they disagree with his policy, but because he got in trouble saying what they all really believe. He ain't the1st repub to say "legitimate" or "real" rape.

Republicans are bronze age on the issue of abortion. They can't hide!

Vote out anti abortion republicans

still waiting for that cease fire call from Obama

[-] 1 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

Don't hold your breath dude, there's an election in 75 days. In America you don't show weakness on defense if you want to be reelected. And how could Pres Obama continue this great progress if he ain't reelected?

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 11 years ago

I have yet to hear a "republican" make the same comment about rape when it comes to a "woman being able to control her body to stop pregnency after being raped" - have you?

[-] 2 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

Yep. Saw a montage of repubs going back to 1983 on the Rachel Maddow show last night.

Give it up. They have to claim the rape victims are lyin so they are comfortable restricting abortion from them. It's evil, misogynist, and out of step with society.

Well, there is also some 900+ bills enacted to limit women's rights, there's those f*in' teabagge(R)s that raised my taxes, there's the ones that force teachers to teach creationism in public schools, As well as those that made holding hands officially a gateway to sex.

That's just a few of the things (R)epelican't do all the time.

It would be so easy, if it was but one of them, but alas, it's the whole damn party.

Please vote out all (R)epelican'ts this November, teabagge(R)s first!
