Forum Post: Cyberattacks on OWS?????

Posted 12 years ago on Jan. 26, 2012, 2:41 p.m. EST by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

You guys in I.T. need to stay sharp for possible attempted/actual sabotage by those who are techno savvy opposed to OWS e.g. US Govt., etc.  I have noticed some performance issues occasionally and wouldn't know if it's normal (server maintenance, reboot, heavy traffic, etc) or something more sinister.

I used to work in I.T. and know what's possible by talented/determined hackers. To be warned is to be forearmed.

Know you guys, as usual, are probably doing a thankless job behind the scenes. Thanks for all your doing.

Undie, I've been having the same issues and was actually going to ask you if YOU could help me perform a -t ping test. I can't remember how. My service provider is Verizon and since Christmas I've had nothing but issues with them ( on an off).

I do not have access to specific information required for ping or tracert. Slowdowns can come from many sources between your node and the server. Depending on your location, IP packets may have to traverse many routers to/from the destination server including the DNS server (which translates the actual server IP address into a name humans can more readily remember). Any of these points along the network could be experiencing a temporary problem that might delay a response of OWS. Because of the nature of TCP/IP, it will try to reroute around hardware failures, but that could be a longer effort if a less efficient route is required, thus a slow response from user perspective.

Last summer I ran a -T ping from the " Run", CMD prompt in the DOS window but I can't remember exactly how to do that. I remember my results over a ten minute time lapse were between 18ms and 1650ms. I think it's supposed to be no higher than 58ms? Forget all that because I doubt this is the issue. Could be too many devices sharing the server at one time??? Peak Hours?

What are you trying to ping? The Verizon server or OWS? At a minimum you would need the server IP address, unless it can be pinged via DNS, in which case the DNS name is all that would be required.

Google is your friend.

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

Google is not my friend anymore. :( But, I can't find the instructions for the test I need....I don't want the generic test. I need the one that I RUN for several minutes so that I can monitor the pings let's say over ten minutes or so. I need to see those values in order to see how often my signal is being dropped.

Do you really think this dump is worth a "cyber attack"? Any conservative is thrilled that this place is open every day so anyone can see what you are really like. How many thousands of non-insane people come here to see what it' all about and read the drivel that is posted here?

OWS is the right's greatest asset. I know you don't think you are crazy and that this place is normal and relevant but this place is the internet equivalent of shitting on a cop car. It's a clown college and I wouldn't change a thing about it. I hope someone keep paying the bills here until at least December. :)

Hmmm. You may have some valid points there, but since I used to work in IT, I am trained to err on the side of caution. Unless you have also worked in IT, you might not be as suspicious/cautious as I am with regard to DoS (Denial of Service) attacks and other forms of security breach. Attack can come from anywhere, from anyone, for any reason. 9/11 changed everything for everybody.

I look to the IT guys maintaining this site for further input as they would have a more in-depth understanding of specific protocols they are following than I.

You don't need to have studied IT to know this website is under a near constant attack from the "TV spammers". It think that's pretty obvious, no?

If you're an IT expert, you'll know it's important for you to give us the specifics of the problems you are seeing. Telling the programmer that hacking exists doesn't really help at all. She already knows this.

[-] 1 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

I was just responding to iwantfreemoneynow. S/he derisively suggested that this OWS site was not worth the effort of possible abuse, and I responded in my defense. That's all.

This website has been under attack from the "TV spammers" for a few weeks now. Most of their postings are deleted or made invisible, but these spam bots are hitting the site 24/7. This might be the result of the slow down you are experiencing.

If you want to help, I suggest you provide a detailed report of what you are experiencing to jart. You should be precise and indicate the times at which you witness problems, what kind of problems, and your computer and connection details. Without proper information, your posting isn't much help.

The people running this site are very competent, you don't need them to warn them that hacking exists. What you need to do is provide them with details.

All I wish is for on this site is the mods to apply the rules equally and fairly to all. It hasn't happened yet. If OWS can't even moderate this little board fairly than how can this movement expect to go anywhere?

pretty busy board

not little

[+] -4 points by CephaIus (34) 12 years ago

I agree. Conspiracy theorists and God boys need to be taken out with much more vehemence if discussions are to remain on topic. Good point.

Classic liberal tolerance, thanks for illustrating my point

[-] 2 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

"liberal" means "of the people" classically (roman greek)

[-] -3 points by CephaIus (34) 12 years ago

You're the one who brought up the forum rules. This has little to do with tolerance, but everything to do with keeping discussions on topic. There are many websites for conspiracy theories and religious talk. Use those instead of breaking the forum rules on this website.

"No Platform. Conspiracy theories, will be removed immediately and the spammer will receive a swift global network ban. Fascist propaganda, will be treated with the similar actions. In that we are very specific about what fascism is: the word has a meaning"

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

fascism means nationalism

[-] 1 points by gestopomillyy (1695) 12 years ago

fas·cism    /ˈfæʃɪzəm/ Show Spelled[fash-iz-uhm] Show IPA noun 1. ( sometimes initial capital letter ) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

You can have a relevant discussion on this site with it involving religion. The founding Fathers were Religious Men. So when discussing things such as the Constitution there is no harm in bringing up religion as long as it is pertinent to the discussion. You are completely intolerant of any mention of Religion though.

[-] -2 points by Kirby (104) 12 years ago

Some people have closed minds to what 99% actually entails.

[-] -3 points by CephaIus (34) 12 years ago

I have discussed religion on this forum on many occasions. I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm an anti-religious atheist. Of course, when I express my opinion about religion it's that it should be banished from every sphere of human activity. That's just my opinion, you can have another.

Are you here to get high-fives, or to engage in discussions?

[-] 0 points by ssjkakkarotx (-77) 12 years ago

Then define your "God Boys" comment above. You made what appears to be a blanket statements covering Religion unless God Boys is some OWs club

[-] -1 points by CephaIus (34) 12 years ago

The forum rules state no platform. My opinion is that Christianity is a platform. If you want to talk about religions in a general manner that's fine, if you want to convert people to a specific religion that's not fine as per the forum rules.

My friend, you brought up the forum rules, not me! Do you think we should respect them or not?

[-] -1 points by ssjkakkarotx (-77) 12 years ago

Of course I think the rules should be respected and enforced. Anything that you have a passion for can be considered a platform however. You could have easily stated that you wanted an end to conversion speeches here. You took the lazy way and made a blanket statement.

[-] -1 points by FarIeymowat (49) 12 years ago

Perhaps you should be banished from every sphere of human activity. That's just my opinion about arrogant intolerant twits, you can have another.

[-] 0 points by CephaIus (34) 12 years ago

You certainly are entitled to your opinion. I'll always defend that.
