Forum Post: Could OWS get a moderated forum? I'll help moderate

To keep the trolls out, to keep the conversation on topic. It might also help to be able to have different categories so the threads are more managable. Also the ability to block users or throw people off the site for trolling would be nice. I have experience with running this kind of forum, let me know. If anyone who actually runs this website is even reading this forum.....

we don't what to ban anyone... because many change their ideas after they actually start talking... however a possible compromise would be to ban them for an hour... based on hate or duplicate repostings ?

On the site I used to help moderate their username was banned for a day and they weren't able to start another username with the same email, and their ISP was blocked as well. If people repeatedly trolled with the same username they were warned and then dropped forever. It really helped to keep the trolling teenagers and trouble makers out. If someone is truly genuine about their beliefs and they don't align with OWS so be it, I'm just getting sick of the "you're gay Zionists" posts.

Ok I'll check that out. It would be nice for those of us who support but can't be there to be able to support online. I'd rather spend my time on this and know that people who are actually able to be there can spend their time wisely off line.

I think the people who would be moderating here split their time between online and street affairs, ie. they might have better things to do (literally, not sarcastically). When they're paying attention, they do delete troll threads, but that unfortunately isn't very often. A group of users made http://www.TheMultitude.org to try and solve the problem.

As for free speech, if someone got up an OWS event and started going on about their Anti-semitic agenda, what would happen? Would that person be welcome at the mic again? There's only so much room on this page at a time and these people are just taking up space with their idiocy.

There's photo and video of a guy holding up a big anti-semitic sign at Liberty Plaza. The other occupiers take turns standing next to him with big signs saying HE'S NOT WITH US, "asshole" and things like that.

I've heard this guy existed before the protest and usually hangs out in Times Sq. Would not doubt someone paid him to go downtown.

But anyway, yeah, I would not allow the mayhem that is this forum to continue.

If they want to allow flame posts there should be subforums so the flames can be swept there.

It's so much easier to be an ass online than in person, and half the trolls are probably bored teenagers.

I don't think it should be moderated. Every one is entitled to free speech--whether or not their views coincide with ours. I would simply challenge OWS supporters to not antagonize so-called "trolls"-- they are only here for attention and to cause problems. Ignore them and continue to talk about the issues at hand. As for moderation, it is not one person's job to determine what topics are relevant--it is a public forum and should remain as such. As for topics, that would be helpful for organizational purposes--but so far, I appreciate everyone's input and opinions. Lets all just remember we are a peaceful movement--do not give in to the temptation of verbally attacking such "trolls." They are only trying to weaken the movement.

All for improvements, especially to limit trolling.
My one caution, I checked out the occupychi site. They added folders there and I think it hindered the flow of ideas. Many issues overlap. I like the free flow here better.
