I love Newt's expression in the background :)

He's great.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

I agree. I have several of his books.

[-] 2 points by therising (6643) 11 years ago

My favorite quote of his: "Justice is what love looks like in public.". You'd enjoy this video of one of his speeches if you haven't seen yet:

One of the most dynamic speeches I've ever witnessed. Important to watch all three parts. I recommend beginning the first section at "4:38" on the youtube clock (skips the introductions / thank you's :) . Enjoy.

part 1 of 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjZydhfUxqs (start at 4:38 to skip introductions)

part 2 of 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTOfjle-fK4&feature=related

Cool, that was the third show I heard on Alternative Radio. Listened to it 3 times I think. It was the first time I heard of him... just last year.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 11 years ago

Definitely great stuff

[-] 1 points by Kavatz (464) from Edmonton, AB 11 years ago

K well it wasn't exactly the same show but lots of the same content. Good stuff.

[-] 1 points by john32 (-272) from Pittsburgh, PA 11 years ago

I'm somewhat familiar with some of the things he talks about. Watched a few speeches here and there...but haven't read any of his books or really dug into his theories yet.

If I was a betting woman than I would lay money that you are more familiar with him than you give yourself credit for. CRT originated with Derrick Bell and legal studies (institutional racism, etc.) in the 70s and 80s. I didn't read Dr. West until the 90s and I don't think that I had even started college yet. If I had then I was head deep in gender issues. By the time that I had gotten to the courses that were inline with my degree (at the time) CRT had taken an interdisciplinary approach.

The point that I am trying to make is that CRT is like part of an ongoing larger conversation. So, if you are familiar with diversity, multiculturalism, race, gender, socioeconomic status and how this shapes someone's world view it isn't going to be something radical.

I think that Texas rewriting history and Tucson's school district banning books and programs are 100% backlashes by some very misguided individuals that are hell bent on ending that discussion and the success that has come from it.

Cool...he's on my "to read" list now. Any recommendations on which book to start off with?

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Race Matters and the Future of the Race are good. Democracy Matters is good if you want something current.

Thanks.

gender issues? multiculturalism = silliness , same with diversity.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Is that right? Do tell.

[-] -1 points by aville (-678) 11 years ago

yes dearie , thats right. social engineering for mush brains.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

That is interesting. Please share how you arrived at this conclusion.

"diversity" ensures people being in a job because of ethnicity, not merit. please explain, what are your " gender issues"?

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

aville said 20 minutes ago at Jan. 22, 2013, 7:06 p.m. EST (delete) a person should be hired for a job because they are the most qualified for the position, NOT because they fill some phoney p.c. slot.

Diversity is much broader. Again, If you cannot grasp the broadness of diversity, then what makes you think that you have any value as an employee and, especially, if that job deals with the public?

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

GF - you are gonna confuse it.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

I don't think so. It already was confused.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

OH - OK - giving it what it knows ( now I'm confused - as it seems to know nothing ) so that it does not get frightened - how gentle.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Well, the mind set that he/she is exhibiting only works well in a little factory with little to no contact with anyone else or if you don't hold a job outside of the home. It doesn't work well interacting with the larger world.

I think that it's a sham anyway.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

LOL - Be prepared - I was a boyscout.

[-] 0 points by HCabret (-327) 11 years ago

I think Cornel is an ignorant hypocrite. Nice guy, but quite ignorant.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

So, you've met him then? Why would you think he is an ignorant hypocrite? Do tell.

[-] 1 points by HCabret (-327) 11 years ago

He is a socialist, christian, transcendentalist. These are very contradctary beliefs, especially if you claim to adhere to all of them.

I have not personally met him, but he seems like a nice person. Nice doesnt equal smart all the time though.
