You can beat your wife and kids in Topeka Kansas... because money is more important than people.

Saw this on the Daily Show. Couldn't believe it was true. Topeka went through budget cuts which included not giving a fuck about domestic abuse.

What is happening to this country? We were on such a nice progressive ride to the top and now we're going backwards.

Up is down and black is white. Whatever happened to ethics?

Whatchya gonna do? Whatchya gonna do when austerity comes for you?

You are a few months behind on this one... it never went through anyway. You all should not allow yourselves to be manipulated by this tactic.

If you know anything about politics and budgets, you would recognize this for what it is - it is a way to get more money in the budget. If you tell people - "hey, if we don't get more money we can't prosecute Domestic Violence cases" people go "Oh my! Fix the budget" rather than taking a look at how the municipality is really spending their money.

This happens at every level of government. In my city, they threatened to close down the public libraries. I mean really - is that the ONLY place where we can cut spending? Of course, they were miraculously able to generate enough revenue to keep the libraries open.

The Feds do it to - both parties - if we don't get this money we are going to have to cut off welfare to single mothers or we are going to have to eliminate college tuition funding. They intentionally pick a budget item that is going to get everyone riled up so they can get the money they want to spend in other places. They won't say "give us this money or we are going to have to eliminate the under-secretary of cardboard recycling" or something silly like that.

It would be nice if people would stop reacting to this manipulation and instead take a look at the books to see how the rest of the money is being spent...there is always ample waste around with the government.

It did say this, "Already, the county government has turned away at least 30 domestic violence cases."

So despite the final ruling, it had already been going on. People should be aware of history... and the article is clearly dated.

The first paragraph in the article reads:

"In Topeka, Kansas city officials are considering a controversial move to decriminalize domestic violence in the city after the Shawnee County government offloaded domestic violence enforcement on to city governments. Cities facing budget cuts and lost revenue are turning to many different cost-cutting measures, but this is perhaps the most extreme. Already, the county government has turned away at least 30 domestic violence cases."

Topeka, the jurisdiction in questio,n is a city. Shawnee county offloaded the cases onto the city because of budget issues - not being able to prosecute the cases - thus turning away 30 DV cases. The city of Topeka did not turn the cases away as part of this proposal.

People should be aware of history. Accurate depictions of history.

You know what happen to Kansas, the Republicans took over. A Republican governor, 94 R’s to 31 D’s in the house and 33 R’s to 7 D’s in the senate.

Conservatism in action!

Not at all, this would appear to be more evangelical than anything else. The conservatives are no longer represented by a political party and the term has been hijacked by those who govern based on their interpretation of the Bible. The Reps today are not the party of Ike or Goldwater any longer.
