Not sure if this has been posted, if it has I apologize. But Carolla has an interesting perspective and just want to see what OWS thoughts are on this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cJD8pZiRIzs

Adam Carolla: There’s something that’s come up in this country, that didn’t used to exist, which is: envy. And it’s a big issue. And it was understood, back in the day, and we are empowering…we now are now dealing with the first wave of participation trophy – “my own fecal matter doesn’t stink”, “empowered”, “I feel so fucking good about myself”, “everybody’s a winner, there’s no losers” – we’re dealing with the first wave of those fucking assholes. That’s who we’re dealing with now. ‘Cause this has been going on for about 25 years, and we’re just starting to get – maybe 20 years – and those kids were 8 or 9 years old, and we’re getting the first…

This is what’s going on. It’s this envy and shame, and there’s gonna be a lot more of it, ’cause it used to be – back in the day – father’d be walkin’ his son down the sideblock and he’d see a guy go by in his Rolls Royce, and the father would say: “There goes Mr. Jenkins. Look up to him. That guy works hard. That guy built a company. That guy built an empire. Now look at him. He’s got his Rolls Royce. He’s drivin’ up the hill.” But what do we do now? Now it’s like: “Oh, look at him. Look at him. Does he need that car? Why’s he need that car? I’m drivin’ a fuckin’ Chevette! Why’s he get to drive that fuckin’ car, you know? Let’s go up there and throw a rock at it.” “That ain’t gonna help you get out of the Chevette, ass douche.”

OWS is not about envy. It is about equality of economic opportunity. When the weathy pay 15% tax on their income and the middle class pay 33%, wanting a fair shake is not being envious.

[-] 0 points by bereal (235) 12 years ago

But you don't want all taxes to be lowered to 15%, instead you want taxes raised to 90% on the rich.

[-] 2 points by monjon22 (508) 12 years ago

No. Equal tax rates for all. The rich are paying less. It isn't fair. Taxing the rich 90% would not be fair. Taxing them 15% is not fair. Taxing them 33% just like the middle class is fair.

[-] 2 points by jbob (74) 12 years ago

they do pay more than 33% i dont know where all you people get your information but you are wrong.

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 12 years ago

Here is how it works. The middle class make money by working. They pay 33% on their earnings. The very wealthy make very little money working. Most of their compensation is in the form of stocks. They make their money on dividends from stocks. Congress passed a law saying that income from dividends is only taxed at 15%.

Why not tax the dividends at 33% and the middle class at 15% ? Well it doesn't work that way, because the wealthy control Congress.

[-] 1 points by jbob (74) 12 years ago

you know how small that group of wealthy people is that actually do that. taxing them more would not make a dent in anything. most of the people that you guys consider "super rich" are hard working small bussines owners that have to close their bussineses because there are people like you that demand that they pay for everyone else, so the government puts their sticky fingers in the pockets of these small business owners, that are making around 250k(which is not very much) and they are forced to close because they cant keep their business open. does that seem fair. does that seem fair to the employees of that business?

[-] 1 points by bereal (235) 12 years ago

The 15% you refer to is Capital Gains tax. Raise that and you raise if for anyone with an IRA, 401K, rental property, or any other investment. Granny will be hardest hit.

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 12 years ago

You can equalize it accross the board. All are taxed at the same rate. If granny takes a hit, granny takes a hit. Anyway, those with IRA and 401ks only get taxed on what they withdraw.

I don't know about the rental property income. That wouldn't be considered a dividend would it? Isn't that just considered regular income?

I don't understand why so many people are assuming that the whole 99%-1% thing is about people wanting to take the money away from the 1%. The beef with 1% is just that they are the buffer between the overwhelming majority and the elite super rich. The 1% have more power in our political system. The 1% remain comfortable in times when the majority is struggling. Sure their taxes are lower than ever before and things can be done about that but nobody is trying to steal all their money away. The problems that we face are more of the structure of our society and the when the people in the 1% want to pretend like those problems don't exist it has more of an impact than say if the people in the 77th percentile or the 51st percentile say they do.

[-] 2 points by monjon22 (508) 12 years ago

I agree. Understanding it requires a bit of thought though. Many people go through their lives taking in information in sound bites.

To a right winger any idea of social justice is about envy. That's because they project their own selfish/animalistic morals onto others.

A lot of small-minded American exceptionalists have an intense hatred for the idea of social justice because it attacks their egocentric notion that America has had wealth and prosperity for the past 60 years because we are inherently better than those less fortunate 3rd world places.

They want to believe they are inherently harder working and more productive than the impoverished of the world. That's why they dismiss external circumstances. It's called the "just world fallacy". Thus by extension they must believe that all wealthy people are inherently harder working and better than poor people.

Yes. And we think of ourselves as helping the world with our aid when instead we are buying the rights to take advantage of the people of those countries. Meanwhile, the aid remains in the hands of the elites in those 3rd world countries.

Yes. Many of these people are blindsided when they lose their jobs and can't pay their bills. Reality is a slap in the face. There are many OWS supporters who are there because they did get slapped in the face. They did everything right. And in the end they find themselves on the receiving end of the disgust they used to feel for the downtrodden.

My neighbor makes over $1 million a year, owns his own company and works all the time and pays the top rate, not 15%. and show me an idiot in the middle class paying 33%. I'm missing something. I made $100k last year, have a mortgage and 3 kids and paid effectively about 12% income tax. If it's just the short term cap gains your talking about, I understand that, but you're making a blanket statement about rich people which is patently false.

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 12 years ago

I would have to look at your neighbors taxes to see how things were classified. The kind of income that most wealthy make is taxed at 15%. It works that way because they own Congress and Congress makes the laws.

Do you have a non-working spouse? If so, that might explain your low tax rate. You have 5 deductions. Most Americans do not have 5 deductions. The poor are also not paying 33%.

[-] 0 points by gforz (-43) 12 years ago

Patently false. "Most" wealthy work for a salary or commission based jobs, or own the business. You are talking about the super wealthy, not the merely "wealthy", the 1%. You're talking about the top .05% of the top 1%. Those people live off dividends or capital gains. The rest just work like me and you, although many work a lot harder and longer. My friend just has the profit distributions from the business. Most middle class Americans, and I repeat most, are married, have on average a couple of kids, a mortgage of some kind, and pay property taxes on their home, all of which you get deductions for. They file jointly most likely, so they wouldn't be too far off my income in total or be less. I can't imagine any family making $75k that has any kids, any kind of mortgage, pays anything close to 33% in effective tax. No way.

[-] 1 points by itsme2 (45) 12 years ago

most who quote these numbers don't know because they don't have experience with paying income taxes....just look at a majority of comments here.

It's time for our European President to go. Time to elect someone new.

So Jimmy Kimmel got his own show and continues comedy..

This clown rode his back for years on the Man Show and now he's stuck doing a podcast(can't even get a radio contract) complaining about how other people are guilty of envy??

He also rode Drew Pinksy's back during Loveline.

This man has failed to succeed at anything on his own.

He's definitely projecting.

[-] 1 points by lesdoodess (10) 12 years ago

it was a stupid rant about a non analogous analogy. Trophies for everyone? WTF is that shit.

How about we all buy large trophies for the losers? That is how fucked up it actually is.

[-] 1 points by jimmycrackerson (940) from Blackfoot, ID 12 years ago

Yeah... I sure do envy those greedy bastards who designed a whole system of bullshit laws to only benefit themselves. Man, I really envy the people who have taken everything they could ever desire from other less fortunate people so they can live "the good life". I wish I could be one of those assholes someday!

No, sorrow is the only emotion I can show for them. When I look into the third chapter of Revelations, I see:

Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know hour I will come upon thee.

Or, if that's too hard to comprehend...

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and serve the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive; but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and what you have heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come unto you.

god i hated that show. it was stupid as hell

[-] -1 points by GetaBrain (22) 12 years ago

Never cared for him either but what he is saying is exactly right. In my day, we earned our money. We never went around wanting to steal somebody else's money who worked hard for it.

We voted crooks out of politics. These days, we have more crooks that won't leave their office and Obama and his corrupt administration does nothing about it. That's who these dopes should be protesting, but Dems are instigating and funding this OWS shit. These lemmings have no idea they are being played. They can't help it; they're stupid and you can't fix stupid.

[-] 2 points by frostfern (59) from Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI 12 years ago

My god this "back in my day" shit is obnoxious. Are you unaware that we are in the midst of the largest economic crisis since the great depression? Maybe the job market is a bit rougher now and most people don't see a very bright future anymore. But why the fuck should you care about the future? I know you're just going to keep your head firmly planted up your ass until the day you die.

As for blaming everything on Obama and "the Dems", I think someone needs to lay off the Fox News Koolaid. Government has been corrupt long before anyone had even heard of Obama. You're the lemming. You're the one being played. Idiot.

[-] 0 points by GetaBrain (22) 12 years ago

What I know, thanks to Foxnews, is that Obama is a liar. He's a fraud. Not conspiracy, facts. Look it up. Lied about transparency, bipartisanship, taxes, lobbyists and much more. Should I go on?

You are correct, the corruption goes way back and that's the problem, it has to end. The only way it's going to end is to get rid of the crooks in politics. They are the reason corporations are getting away with what they do.

I'm not saying there are no GOP crooks, but right now most of the crooks are Dems. Why is it that when a GOP crook gets caught, they're gone instantly but we can't get rid of Dem crooks for shit.

Holder let New Black Panthers that were threatening voters with bats off the hook. You can't deny it, the video is all over the place and they even admitted it. Imagine if they were white? They would be doing big jail time now. A GOP AG would be made to resign by now.

Look at some of the crooks still in office; Rangel, Pelosi, Waters, Seabrook, Frank, Dodd and many more. All Dems that are thieves and won't leave office on their own and are not being forced out by Dems. Can't think of any GOP right now but I'm sure the are a couple.

We need to get term limits for everyone and clean the House and Senate. We need to lower govt salaries for politicians drastically. We need to get govt workers to start paying their own pensions and health care like the private sector does. Why should private sector pay for their own AND govt workers benefits? Are govt workers better than we are?

Can anyone answer this? I've asked a million times and I never got a sensible answer why public sector workers should get their benefits paid for by taxpayer money when the private sector has to pay their own. Usually the public sector makes more money than the private sector counterpart to boot.

There much more that needs to be fixed but protesting Wall Street isn't doing anything. We need to start were the problem is and that is politicians.

I'm not sitting on my ass, I work very hard to change things that I mentioned above, but OWS pisses me off in that Dems are behind it. That is their strategy, to divide the people and it's working. Just look at this board and you can see that.

Layoff the Koolaid? Typical lefty response. Just tell me if any of the facts above are wrong. You can't do it because all of it is documented. Once again, look it up. If I"m wrong about any of this, I'll admit it, unlike the left.

[-] 1 points by frostfern (59) from Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI 12 years ago

I don't give a shit about "Dems" or any of your screw brained partisan drivel. You need to detox from all the shit Rupert Murdock and the Koch brothers are feeding you. It's not good for your brain.

Also, public sector workers are not your enemy. Stop being jealous.

[-] 1 points by GetaBrain (22) 12 years ago

Typical fucking lefty response. You got no facts, just 'jealous' 'I don't give a shit', 'Rupert Murdock' and so on.

I asked you to tell me if anything I said was false and you can't. YOU FUCKING CAN'T, CAN YOU? It's a simple question you can't answer. You fucking can't because it's all true. Come on fuck for brains, tell me what, if anything I said is false. It isn't you fucking moron and you can't see it cause you drank the Koolaid fuck face.

Guess I'll be banned or censored now cause you pricks can't take any opposing views. If it isn't you way, you just attack or censor or ban.

Read my first post again moron and just tell me what I said was false. Simple, isn't it lemming?
