Charlotte Atheists and Agnostics

WHEREAS, the application of reason, more than any other means, has proven to offer hope for human survival upon Earth, improving conditions within the universe, and cultivating intelligent, moral and ethical interactions among people and their environments, and WHEREAS, those who wrote the Constitution of the United States of America, the basic document for governing the affairs of humankind within the United States, based it upon principles delineated within the philosophies distinguishing the historical Age of Reason, and WHEREAS, most citizens of the United States purport to value reason and its application, and WHEREAS, it is the duty and responsibility of every citizen to promote the development and application of reason NOW, THEREFORE, I, Anthony R. Foxx, Mayor of Charlotte, do hereby proclaim May 03, 2011 as “A DAY OF REASON” in Charlotte and commend its observance to all citizens.

I like the statement. But the last line bothers me every time I hear it.. “People are waking up” All that means is that you think people are agreeing with your view and involved with your cause. The uber racist website Stormfront uses this “People are waking up” phrase probably as much as OWS. On Stormfront it means people are agreeing with racism and want to get rid of non-whites.

My point is that every group, cause, movement uses the phrase to support their cause. People aren’t asleep, they’re just not as caring or involved in your cause as you are. Sorry for the rant. That’s just a pet peeve of mine.

I understand. It's semantics and unfortunately these words adhering to strictest definitions as described in the best dictionaries can never be precise enough to convey true meaning. In other words, we're stuck pretty damn hard in some rut I only wish I could describe it properly.
