  1. Break up the monopolies. The so-called "Too Big to Fail" financial companies – now sometimes called by the more accurate term "Systemically Dangerous Institutions" – are a direct threat to national security. They are above the law and above market consequence, making them more dangerous and unaccountable than a thousand mafias combined. There are about 20 such firms in America, and they need to be dismantled; a good start would be to repeal the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and mandate the separation of insurance companies, investment banks and commercial banks.

  2. Pay for your own bailouts. A tax of 0.1 percent on all trades of stocks and bonds and a 0.01 percent tax on all trades of derivatives would generate enough revenue to pay us back for the bailouts, and still have plenty left over to fight the deficits the banks claim to be so worried about. It would also deter the endless chase for instant profits through computerized insider-trading schemes like High Frequency Trading, and force Wall Street to go back to the job it's supposed to be doing, i.e., making sober investments in job-creating businesses and watching them grow.

  3. No public money for private lobbying. A company that receives a public bailout should not be allowed to use the taxpayer's own money to lobby against him. You can either suck on the public teat or influence the next presidential race, but you can't do both. Butt out for once and let the people choose the next president and Congress.

  4. Tax hedge-fund gamblers. For starters, we need an immediate repeal of the preposterous and indefensible carried-interest tax break, which allows hedge-fund titans like Stevie Cohen and John Paulson to pay taxes of only 15 percent on their billions in gambling income, while ordinary Americans pay twice that for teaching kids and putting out fires. I defy any politician to stand up and defend that loophole during an election year.

  5. Change the way bankers get paid. We need new laws preventing Wall Street executives from getting bonuses upfront for deals that might blow up in all of our faces later. It should be: You make a deal today, you get company stock you can redeem two or three years from now. That forces everyone to be invested in his own company's long-term health – no more Joe Cassanos pocketing multimillion-dollar bonuses for destroying the AIGs of the world.

Questions

A) Citizenship, US Voters have an obligation to stop their government from conducting wars overseas. How will people stop government without guns. If there is no gobal government to stop the US War Machine ... who will stop the Democrats or Republicans ... and How will they do it?

B) What is our Responsibiltiy to spread the news that the US government is a Military Empire that kills civilians and starts wars. Our people are the most ignorant and the stupidest of the entire world. What do we do....?

C) Something is Rotten In Denmark. The USA is a Military Empire, but the people don't know. Should we do something?

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

We should do all that we can to educate and get the word out.

[-] 2 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

This is the Big Lie. You can't vote for War. You can't even hold Congress accountable... because they didn't vote for war either! Congress only agreed to fund the president's foreign adventure known as Global War... It is Disgusting.

[-] 1 points by gsw (3410) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 11 years ago

Maybe if we had buses of people who could show up with locals, kind of like the freedom riders, with young college people, and demonstrate or educate in the home states of the hawks at thei universities, but I don't know how to really change minds. It seems people have their ideological outlook set by the time they can vote. The military is probably at these red state schools recruiting with ROTC programs.

[-] 1 points by gsw (3410) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 11 years ago

The repub congress won't defund war on terror. After 11 years

65 percent think we should get out of Afghanistan now. 35 percent say stay

Obama seems eager enough to continue looking strong. It is bankrupting us and making us weaker, not stronger.

Pretty sure the Economy would take a big hit if we defunded the Defense dept by $200 B. I would suggest doing that, but would shift the money to investing in a good business environement targeting small businesses ... Investment is way down by the way. There are R & D type investments, Science to fund, Undersea Projects that might teach us more about the value of the Oceans, Projects that could get High School and Secondary School kids excited about learning and getting ready to go into business with technology.

But I'm not an expert. Recycling and Waste will become important. Alt Energy is always good competition for the Giants of Oil.

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

We R all Flighty, aren't we? The fact is there is no mechanism to stop the War machine. Unless u think Referendum.

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

We ( people ) can be flighty - that is why that those who would keep us that way offer all kinds of distractions/divisions. Cause We ( The People ) can also be very determined and steadfast - when given good cause.

Global warming/ Climate change

Perpetual war for Profits over people

Destruction of society for Profits/power over people

etc

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

How about Free and open Elections... Free and Open Presidential debates ... How about Air Time for Green Party, Libertarians, Constitutionalist, justice Party, and Socialist Party...

History seems to show that the Legue of Women Voters used to see the Agenda for Presidential debates ... and it I'm not miss remembering ... they worked toward a National Referendum of some kind in the 1970s.

Seems to be a big story here of pushing aside democracy.

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yes money and the party structure that has been built off of that money/influence - put on a good show for the people - but does not educate as to facts/issues just plays a popularity contest - keep the people divided and let the money play the rest of it's influence game.

The league of women voters was pushed aside ( out of the picture ) because they were not a distraction for the masses but an actual issue focusing group.

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

Good Title "Pushing Aside Democracy; the story of Barak Obama".

Eh, President Obama might surprise us with a couple of legacy issues/accomplishments yet.... He spoke on Gun Ban.

State of the Union, USA, Corporate Military Government in Pertetual War, encouraging all citizens to prepare to work for either corporations or the government jobs. Post Industrial USA. Post Enlightenment. Post Democracy. defacto Financial Economy ...mainly focused on global resources, offshore production, local engineering and design, with emphasis on arbitrage and leveraged buyouts of smaller companies.

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Time to open the windows and clear out the smoke time to break the mirrors - no more smoke and mirrors.

Issues plain and simple - issues and facts - and an involved public/population. Government serving the Public/People in Health Peace and Prosperity for ALL.

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

Case study: NRA. Not sure how they are incorporated. Probably a nonprofit. We know government offices have all kinds of goals that drive their public statements. So organizations are self serving...

But would we want to get rid of many organizations outright? We have soft money (501(c)(4) organizations, 527 organizations), Political Action Committes, you have Foundations, Trade unions, Charities (do they lobby).... Perhaps if they don't Lobby or contribute to Campaigns they can exist without causing corruption (little corruption).

501(c)(4) organizations are defined by the IRS as "social welfare" organizations. Unlike 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, they may also participate in political campaigns and elections, as long as the organization's "primary purpose" is the promotion of social welfare and not political advocacy.[28

traditional political action committees, "Super PACs", and political parties are "527s."

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

It is time for the individual to look at the whole of any organizations goals.

Is the organization limiting? How? Why? To What Purpose? Is any of that good? Why? Is any of that bad? Why?

Is the organization empowering? To Whom? How? Why? Is any of that good? Is any of that bad?

Just because an organization may support one of your views - do they support all of your views? Should you oppose your organizations wrong thinking? Should you be able to pick the things you support? The things you oppose?

Amalgams - mixtures - not necessarily good combinations.

Issues one at a time - to be handled cleanly/clearly? as each is addressed.

[-] 1 points by Middleaged (5140) 11 years ago

Well that "How Stuff Works" Video shows corporations were formed for very limited terms for a narrow purpose. We have some posts here about rolling biggest corps up to federal incorporation to limit and impose limits at least on business corps. Then there might be a qustion of all the other kinds of orgs that lobby.

I wonder who could make a post about this?

[+] -11 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Sounds like you have a good start - copy and paste some things into a new post/topic.

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

Because the LWV wouldn't submit to the duopolies insistence on controlling debates, & protecting the candidates from tough questions/3rd party participation.

A new year starting with a view from the bottom of the cliff. Will the view really be that much different? For those with no money probably a little worse than today - for those with money? Hell they will still have money.

[-] 1 points by Theeighthpieceuv8 (-32) from Seven Sisters, Wales 11 years ago

I think there are probably any number of working class and lower middle class people who are struggling with mortgages, trying to raise kids, in a normal life setting, that would rather not give any more to this corrupt government.

OWS/Occupy has a very large audience - larger then one might suspect due to the non coverage of MSM - but there it is - word is getting around.

[-] 0 points by VQkag2 (16478) 11 years ago

OWS has encouraged and empowered every progressive org, union, non union workers, and like minded politicians.

Any slow progress we see is because of this great progressive movement.

"word is getting around" And it must. Because we are 1 year into a multiyear effort. Much hard work on the streets and in the voting booth is required, setbacks and slow progress should be expected, compromise and lifting up our flawed soldiers may be hard to swallow.

Occupy Wall st, Occupy the govt, Occupy the future.
