Forum Post: ★ - Towards a Strong Forum Community - ★

Posted 10 years ago on June 12, 2013, 3:22 a.m. EST by CommunitySeeker (-3)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

This forum's community has suffered a lot lately. Many political discussions lead to disagreements which should remain healthy, after all, disagreeing is normal, but, unfortunately, often descend into attacks which divide us more and more.

We should get together behind our very own project. We could start an action/affinity group. There are many offshoots of Occupy like the Rolling Jubilee, and I'm sure we could come up with some type of group that could be handled on the Internet. This would help us focus on something useful. I have a feeling many people attack others because they are bored, and don't know how else to try to put meaning into their use of this site. Having a common project that affects real change would give everyone here a strong sense of meaning.

The possibilities are endless.

I can think of one simple idea. A type of hub for all the affinity groups where we post daily news of what's going on with those groups. We could also do online interviews of people running those groups, of people affected by those groups, etc... It would help bring everything together under a nice umbrella. A site dedicated to all the affinity groups. It could also be a nice first step towards a type of Bridge To The Ground. For example, I noticed the Rolling Jubilee website has not been updated in awhile. Perhaps the people running it don't have time since they are concentrated on the ground. We could have a contact with them and update our site with current news about that project, and many others.

Anyways, that's just one idea. I'm sure you could all come up with much better ones. We should brain storm. I'm sure there's something we can all organize together. Something useful that would have a real impact. If we did such a thing, we would all come together and feel very proud of our accomplishments.

It doesn't make you less deceptive either.

Not a word about puppets, nor a word about admissions and apologies from that user formerly known as thrashy.

Until that happens the possibilities are extremely limited.

Communities need trust. You don't bring that to the table. You bring socks.

Listen Dirtbag, Chris, whatever we are calling you today, you are a liar. Scratch a lie catch a thief. Isn't that how it goes?

I'm not interested in anything to do with you, Thras. The kind of communication that you want requires trust. Well, here is the deal. If you have multiple IDs then it doesn't exist. You knew this before, you know this now. You're a right wing shill.

God you're boring. The only thing you want to do is fight.

Not everyone has to join. It's an idea. Those that are interested in starting an affinity group should, those that don't want to don't have to. Very simple.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

No, you are boring. Does this look like someone that supports occupy? http://occupywallst.org/forum/leaving-out-a-critical-pleading-option-in-credit-c/#comment-979268

Has this ID ever supported OWS?

No, see you like to fight. You just don't like the ones that make you work.

[-] -2 points by kolipolitusa (-8) 10 years ago

I don't know who that is, but I just read his comment. So what if he doesn't support Occupy? His comment his polite and he offers arguments for his position. Let him speak his mind. People can discuss issues with him in a serious fashion, and perhaps he will change his mind.

The only way to create the 99% is to engage with people who don't support the views of Occupy. We can't be preaching to the choir night and day. What use is that? I'm happy some come here even if they don't support Occupy. It gives us a chance to engage them. As long as they don't use name calling, insults, profanity, and post spam, it's fine by me.

I quite enjoy discussing issues with all kinds of people. I'm not here only to give high fives.

What I find annoying is people posting off topics rants like you do. You're polluting this thread. That's actually against the forum rules. The poster you linked to was on topic.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

It's not here for actual discussion. You are aware of this. This is not an ID that has ever been open. You are aware of this as well.

This is all about how to make your life easier. You should lose the multiple IDs. You are not about OWS.

[-] -2 points by kolipolitusa (-8) 10 years ago

Alright, take care. I'll let other people discuss the idea in this posting. You can go troll someone else now. I'm sure some here will find the idea good. Thanks for the bumps.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

I'm just going to keep on pointing you out.

[-] -3 points by martinspitz (-40) 10 years ago

Please do. I appreciate it when you bump my postings. Thanks. And, if I can keep you busy, it means you won't have time to attack many new users.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

I bet. I enjoy making sure that everyone is aware of your deceptiveness. You are the new users. I'm just making sure that you and yours little game of coopting is going to be a rough ride.

[-] -3 points by martinspitz (-40) 10 years ago

It's not too hard, I usually let people know I'm Thrasymaque. It's not like I try to hide. My writing style is quite easy to recognize. I also don't engage in profanity, and childish name calling. In any case, I hope you're having a good day. Thanks for the attention.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Nah, your division tactics are initially quite subtle but they become larger as time goes on.

[-] -2 points by martinspitz (-40) 10 years ago

I'm not sure what's divisive about this posting. The idea is to bring people together under a common project in the hopes of stopping petty forum fights.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

The petty fights that all revolve around you. :D

How convenient is that?

[+] -4 points by martinspitz (-40) 10 years ago

Most petty fights revolve around other users than myself. I see you guys attacking all kinds of users everyday. The petty fights revolve around those who start them. Usually, you, shooz, and DKAtoday.

You don't care about community at all. You're an individualist. A very angry and stressed one. You just use this forum to blow off steam, not to forge links and create the 99%.

[-] 4 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Nah, usually it's just you and your multiple IDs.

[-] 0 points by gsw (3407) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

Let's all be civil, as suggested by the poster.

How about a foundation and think tank, like the right wing has in ALEC Et al.

Establish doable short and longer term goals, to be decided.

1 identify and support with affidavits state and national politicians who support hr29. (this is open to debate if we support this tactic).

  1. Identify and seek funds to run candidates with practical ideas to reform systems for betterment of all.

  2. Give material ideas and assistance to local groups that support ideas of the foundation, which will need to be determined here.

  3. Explore and support practices of peaceful problem solving, and nonviolence.

  4. Identify other workable steps that can be addressed by foundation think tank, such as identify communicators for public dissemination of this effort.

Everyone owns our problems and can help in ameliorating them. We need tools, methods & resources & vision to build the bridge to a better future on earth.

Work together voluntarily.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Nobody saw that coming.

[-] 1 points by gsw (3407) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

I must become the solution. It's in the DNA.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

No. That isn't quite the case.

Are everyone's ideas except your own designed to deceive? And, where is the deception. His ideas make complete sense. We should work towards creating a tighter community that creates real actions.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Nah, just those that have multiple IDs and also need cash to function. Since you didn't go through the websites or bother to question the information then you really do not have a case.

I agree that Snowden acted obediantly. If he was truly DISobedient, then he would have never had the access that he did in the first place.

[-] 1 points by Nell350 (4) 10 years ago

Very true no matter how they work to discredit him. I'm sure he had/has some intentions of his own, human nature again. I'm positive he is not perfect. I'm also positive that I don't care that he isn't perfect, he did the right thing. Given the air and opportunity, many on this thread alone would have chosen similar actions in disobedience to benefit the people.

I don't think Occupy should play into politics. It wasn't designed for that. It's an anarchic protest and movement with the goal of bringing the left and right under common ground to form the 99%. As soon as you play into politics, you have to take particular stances on issues which means you lose many followers. Occupy should stay clean and simple and only tackle issues we can all agree on, like getting money out of politics, and creating social activities to help the unfortunate.

I have no problem with those who want to create an offshoot which is political. However, it shouldn't use the name Occupy. We need to keep Occupy focused on what it does best. It shouldn't be used to do everything.

I like your idea otherwise. Defining achievable goals and what needs to be done to achieve them is a very good idea. We need to translate what's being discussed here into real actions. There's no reason we should only come to this site to have discussions that just end up buried in the website's database. There's a lot of good things being said, some good ideas, we need to find ways to use them in practice.

Thank you for your contribution.

[-] -3 points by gsw (3407) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

There you go. There you could be as deceptive as you want. Benny---you could have all the multiple IDs that you need to make it look great. Benny 2----think of all the fake conversations that you could have.

[-] 2 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 10 years ago

hehehe .... so now gsw is thrasy .... everyone is thrasy ... maybe GF is thrasy too .... ;~)

[-] 2 points by gsw (3407) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

So you would work with Thrassy who is not me on a foundation to do something, maybe on a Facebook or some other collaborative affinity site.

Someone who can get along with others. Very practical. and Logical.

You had great ideas for poll software on issues, we could also, personally call people in our area, doesn't cost anything to call them up, have them express their views, calculate the sentiments. Then we would have some data to run by candidates on such issues as HR29, and others we think could do some good for ourselves

ours would be a shoestring foundation, in the sky, all volunteers, a democracy, but towards links on the ground, actions shown to have positive impacts on the communities, and popular.

[-] 1 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 10 years ago

btw.... the problem w/ Thrasy posting with multiple ID's is technically an easy fix.... all the site has to do... is use a cookie to assign the member to a single machine.... then if the same machine is used to register more than one user... the previous account could be deleted or folded or whatever .... I know Jart knows how to do that.... but I bet she does not think it's a problem .... likely because it's such a minuscule problem compared to the real worldwide issues at hand that we should be focusing on....

[-] -2 points by ThaManOfAMilIonMonikers (-2) 10 years ago

That wouldn't help. I could simply delete the Cookie before creating a new user. There's no good way to stop puppeteering. The best is to have a moderator that also uses the site a lot so he can quickly ban puppets. That's how it used to be in the old days. The most active users would be promoted to wizard status.

[-] 2 points by BradB (2693) from Washington, DC 10 years ago

are you sure :) ....

  • if you deleted the cookie... you would not be able to log in under your registered user name... and would have to reactivate the account via... email.... and we could simply restrict the number of re-activations allowed each day...

  • if you deleted the cookie... and registered a new username account... again you will have to take the time to activate the account.... and from a different email address... than the one stored on the server.....

  • further we can use identifiers in the cache also.... as well as the html,... IP address, etc....

  • in any sense .... we can make it extremely burdensome on someone who is registering multiple accounts.... and make it easy for those who use the site as intended ... ; )

about work.... I'm trying to work the least I have to ... to pay bills ... so I can spend maximum time coding.... it's been difficult... after working 3 or 4 days... it takes me at least a day or two to get back into the code mind.... regardless of how many notes I make

[-] 2 points by gsw (3407) from Woodbridge Township, NJ 10 years ago

good thinking, there should be enough people on this site who would like to do some more activity that is productive to their affinity and taste, who could break off a sizable piece of the puzzle on which to focus some attention, if it is their choosing and to their liking. Set goals, break into timelines and methods, break into steps. Move forward.

Not to take away from here. this site would remain the meta hub
