Damned good question!

[-] 1 points by 666isMONEY (348) 12 years ago

Some conspiracy theories are legitimate. U$A government lies all the time. The etymology of the word 'devil" means to slander. We have a satanic government.

No doubt in my mind the CIA killed JFK; 911, Pearl Harbor, Tonkin Gulf and USS Liberty were all False Flag Operations or set-ups to get U$A into war.

I could list disinfo conspiracies too like HAARP.

My experience is it's useless to discuss conspiracies on the internet unless U already believe them.

[-] 3 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 12 years ago

Or unless you're highly entertained by them. I haven't had much need for television since this movement started because of all of the free entertainment here.

[-] 1 points by 666isMONEY (348) 12 years ago

Ha, ha, I used to go to these far-right John Birch Society type meetings every Saturday to hear off-the-wall conspiracy theories for the entertainment. One of the most interesting were the "Tax Protesters" who thought U didn't have to pay income taxes.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 12 years ago

I know exactly what you mean, the people who think that you don't have to file a tax return because they can't find a law on the book that explicitly says, "You have to file a tax return."

You'll see a lot of that same variety of legal illiteracy in the responses to this post:

http://occupywallst.org/forum/government-does-have-the-authority-to-restrict-spe/

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

I actually think the same way, I posted a similar comment a while back.

I go to those posts to play around all the time... This site is interactive and best of all, free with no ads.....

The exception : the spam video links, which most have been officially deleted!!!!

[-] 1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

We are focusing mostly on the "Watch season 3 episode 8 of TEEN MOM" garbage Spam posts, we have been taking them down as much as we can...

The other stuff is not as important to me right now...

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 12 years ago

I've been very curious about that too. Our dear crackpot friend GawdOfTruth concluded that the people running the site are either incompetent, or that this site is part of a conspiracy aimed at disrupting Occupy and harming their credibility. I made fun of his conspiracy theory because he was a pretty easy guy to make fun of and he had lots of other really whacko ideas. And I defended JART out of a sense of incredulousness at the idea of somebody who can't comprehend a Markdown syntax guide calling a person who can build a web site "incompetent". But ... hmm...

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Well despite all our differences, we have to deface posts of the movie ads and SPAM to start, then conspiracy theory as a second priority.

This has been doing nothing but wasting time, I have been able to have good debate with a select few out there. There are more active spam accounts and few actual REAL users of this site...

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 12 years ago

"Defacing" spam posts bumps them up.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

As soon as you get them defaced, they bottom out with 10 minutes, I have 3 monitors, they refresh, I execute a macro and all set. If people open and see defaced post, they usually move on, esp if defined as SPAM up front. If in the bump up list, it will say accountname=SMAM ACCOUNT! I see them work down to the bottom. Bomb the message boxes seems to slow them in their track, every 10 minutes new ones were appearing, I have seen 0 since flooding the boxes

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Good tactics.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

NEW spam accounts just popped up, new posts....

m3m3ku

I am tapped on PMs, hit these guys

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I have to get back to work, but I'll do some hits in a few hours when I have some spare time.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Sure, I actually got things to do also....

I wanted to come on here for some debates and wasted time trying to clean some things up..

Definitely getting worse lately, later -

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Yes, I don't usually deface spammers because all they care about are the links in the main OP. I think it's better to bomb their message boxes and let their postings sink. They are not here for discussions.

I deface the posts of conspiracy theorists to discourage them into trying to establish discussions on the forum. To properly deface, you must prepare a series of images and post it many times really fast. This means you will only bump their posting for a period of about 5 minutes. Then you use your friends to vote the image series in a way so that some are on top and others on the bottom essentially sandwiching the discussion. I usually try to up vote many series quite high so that when they start to down vote them it ends up fragmenting their posting. It works really well. Many have left the forum as a result of this.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Same here, on another note vasteqq and two of the others were having conversation , I voted down, defaced, all set....

I see what you are saying, sandwich it, vote all of it down except the deface and people will look, see pics, etc and move on....rather than weed through to find discussion. Still some idiots start gabbing on the useless post.

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

If you want to go deeper you can also use the following techniques:

  • Use many different images. This will make the page slower to load. You can use really big images, or very large gif animations. You could set it up so the page is extremely slow to load. Most users will leave before loading is complete. I haven't pushed this idea yet.

  • Create a copy of the like, dislike, reply, and permalink then create series within series. For example, if you have 5 different images that repeat, place these fake links in between every repetition and repeat various times in one comment. Before the fake links also add the [-] NewEnglandPatriot (Dartmouth, MA) 2 points 5 minutes ago fake line. Then you post many comments like this is a row. It makes it much harder to dislike the comments. Probably not worth it for spammers, but I enjoy doing this for conspiracy theorists. If you have your posts set up before hand, it goes fast.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

TM, I added a couple more users to the list, asbak2, asbak3, and sent a post regarding recent activity from maylanta and m3m3ku.

m3m3ku is new, maylanta - I couldn't send any more PM's to halt.

This all sounds great, I will have to go through the list, yea I notice my video memory allocations drain on some of the heavy image pages you defaced....

[-] 0 points by InspectorGadget (-50) 12 years ago

Please spread the news about www.copblock.org & www.adamvstheman.com which is two groups of very dedicated people out on the front lines fighting the growing tyrannical para militarized police state and corrupt governmental system for our rights. Thanks!

Adam Kokesh is a Ron Paul and RT tool. Occupy DC HATES him.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 12 years ago

If you want moderation you email abuse@occupywallst.org, there are about 20 moderators and it's going to actually do shit, jart already does a lot of things and pestering her about moderation isn't going to make things go faster if she's the only one notified.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I like your choice of words, but I never pestered jart about moderation. Actually, I wrote to her about coding scripts to help curb spam, but she never replied. I figured you girls didn't care for help. You have a long list of names on this page, I hope these accounts will be deleted. I don't think TV shows about Kardasians really helps the movement.

Honestly, I'm surprised you need someone to point out and report the spam we are seeing lately. In my opinion, it's plainly visible. I have a feeling the moderators are not even using this site.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 12 years ago

The problem is figuring out a good enough filter, as blocking words like watch and stream would make many legit posts impossible.

[-] 1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Your forum is being attacked by spam bots. Iv'e verified some of the messages on Google and they are also being posted on other sites as well. If nothing is done, this forum will soon be drowning in useless advertising. This is a job for programmers, not moderators. It needs to be stopped with code as it can't be curbed manually. Bots don't get tired.

This site's main vulnerability is the easy signup process. You must make this harder to filter out the bots. I would be more than happy to write some code if jart or the other programmers could guarantee someone will at least look and consider my code (not necessarily accept it). Get me in contact with jart so that we can discuss the best techniques to curb the problem. I am willing to volunteer some of my free time to code scripts and filters to help this forum. I care.

[-] 0 points by Rico (3027) 12 years ago

Wouldn't it be possible to create a near-real-time mirror site that is filtered ? It seems one could make it so folks on the mirror could engage in real-time with a 15 minute lag between updates here. Am I nuts ?

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

It would be possible if the admins allow it. This site is open-source and another version could be installed on another server. Both sites could pull from the same database, but the applied filters could be different on both sites. This would take a bit of code tweaking, but it shouldn't be too hard. Essentially, the mirror site could use the part of this site's database that holds the comments and user information, but it could use its own database tables for filtering spammers and posts.

It could be a good idea that would satisfy both types of customers. Those who want the all out site, and those who want a filtered version.

Personally, I would prefer having the possibility for users to apply their own filters individually. For example, I could ignore all posts and comments from certain users of my choosing. And could filter comments and posts that have certain words or phrases that I choose. This wouldn't affect other users. Everyone could use their own filters. This would give anyone the freedom to post whatever they want, and the freedom to read whatever they want.

I proposed coding this functionality a few weeks ago, but never heard back from the site's main programmer. I'm not interested in doing this work unless I know that it will be integrated into the site.

[-] 1 points by Rico (3027) 12 years ago

Couldn't you just pull the posts off this site as though you were a person surfing the posts ? I know this introduces a time lag, but it would only be significant on the first collection (thanks to posts 'bumping' to the top), and people using the mirror would never see it anyway (direct posting on mirror/delayed posting via this site).

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I'm not too sure how this would be accomplished. You'd need to perform a search on the site which would be quite complex. Having access to the database would be so much easier. Perhaps the moderators could sync their database to another one so we would only need to access the mirror database that would be fed from the original. This way, they wouldn't have to worry that their main database would get messed up.

[-] 0 points by Rico (3027) 12 years ago

From my perspective as a C programmer, it wouldn't be all that hard. It does seem very hard to me using HTML, CSS, etc, but that may only be because my skills with those tools are quite limited.

If only I had time....

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

HTML and CSS are not really languages. They can't process information. To pull the comments from the database, or from the site pages directly you would need to use a server side language like Python, or PHP. You could even use C.

You could do it by reading the HTML from the various pages on this site then parsing it. But why go through all that trouble? Why not just ask the moderators to have access to the database. It's so much easier that way.

[-] 1 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

I wish we did have access. Many problems would be solved.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

This is a great example where anarchy falls apart. There is no way this site's database could be made accessible to all Occupy protesters. Not directly anyways. There will always have to be leaders who control certain aspects of the movement.

What would be really cool would be for the programmers to create an API giving indirect access to the database via server side programming. This way the database could be fed from another site we could create. We could implement whatever spam filters we want. It would also make the database accessible from sites like Facebook or iphone apps.

We could do all sorts of cool things. We could pull out comments from our favorite posters and follow them like on Twitter. The only limit would be our imaginations.

If this were to be done, I would be the first to write some code for it.

[-] 1 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

I don't mean we as all of us, just a select few that could keep things clean and flowing.

This site is a direct representation to the anarchy in the streets; that would unfold immediately without a governing body.

These are the people that would assume control; I need an escape plan ASAP!

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

You can always ask the moderators to provide you with access.

Still, I feel an API would be the best solution. This would provide every protester the power to use this discussion system without providing them direct access to the server.

[-] 1 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

Did you ever ask??? If so, what was the response?

I am not sure if I care that much anymore.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I never asked for database access. The main moderator just told me she considers me a troll, so I very much doubt they would give me access. I asked jart once if she would be willing to look at some pull requests if I submitted them. I wanted to code some spam filters. I made a post about it and wrote some ideas. She never replied. I decided I wouldn't bother coding something if I didn't have the assurance she would at least look at it. There's one pull request that stayed pending for months. I didn't want to make an effort for nothing.

[-] 2 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

I don't think it matters much at this moment in time.... Most humans have attention spans of a moth. Most of the real thinkers are gone, perhaps the holidays is a factor.

We have been left to the wolves, my friend.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Ya, I'll give you notice if I decide to leave. When I leave, I'll send you a message with a temporary email you can use to contact me. (I don't want to give my real email on here.) Once we have made contact, I'll give you my real email. If you leave first, do the same.

BTW - Where are you?

[-] 1 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

OK, once my message limit resets, we will exch. proactively

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

True. I'll most likely vanish very soon. I have more serious work to attend to.

[-] 1 points by NewEngIandPatriot (230) 12 years ago

Well lets at least find a way to stay in contact before doing so.

[-] 0 points by Rico (3027) 12 years ago

And how's that workin' out for you ? ;o)

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

Lol!

[-] 0 points by timir (183) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

why you care about conspiracy theorists? they have right to be exist, isnt they. if you do not compare them with spamers nazi and antisemites

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

As per the forum rules, they do not have the right to post here. Read rule #2. The reason I care is because they promote illogical thinking which is very bad. We need to promote logic. OWS won't solve any problems if it lets itself get drowned by the confabulations of schizophrenics writing about their paranoid delusions from their mothers' basements. Conspiracy theorists are mentally ill. They need professional help.

They're babbling. They come here and repeat the same claims over and over again. How many times will the Truthers tell their stories? It's been then years and they have been debunked over and over again. Still, they say the same delusion stories. It's a waste of time for everybody. They should go post in their own forums. Their material as nothing to do with OWS, and only promotes illogical delusion thinking.

[-] 0 points by timir (183) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

you know what... fuck the rule number 2. i'll give you even one more conspiracy theory to make you happy. here is the thinking: this forum has rules to follow, and has bunch of volunteers sitting all day by the Church . why wouldn't they have a master key to clean up? be liberal, dont go crazy about little things. this movement been created by anonymous and seems like been anonymously controlled. Thats why you see no change, but mess, anarchy and fragmentation. but the main socialism idea about 1% was united. dont listen tv, listen your heart, spread the true, not bs. OW movement need something similar to fight club.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

You're babbling again.

[-] 0 points by turak (-812) 12 years ago

trolls on the OWS forum complaining about the quality of the OWS forum: oh the irony.

Freak: if this forum was moderated at all: you would be the first to be kicked off. The only reason you're even allowed here is because it's not being moderated..

[-] -1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

TM, I added 2 more

asbak2 and asbak3, see if you can kindly fit those in when you get a chance. I would be willing to assume some admin duties as you , if necessary we need field cleanup asap

[-] -1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

They have ceased posting since I bombarded their PM boxes, perhaps that is enough to disrupt the scripts for now.

TM as soon as you see "Watch video online, etc" PM pgs of Spam alerts as have I, and deface the obvious SPAM posts, from these users as you see fit

[-] -1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Yea its getting to a point I cannot keep up lately. I just bombarded almost 10 SPAM ACCOUNTS, this is getting out of hand.

Jart, I ID'd all accounts in posts, delete them please! I also hit all accounts with messages, I have maxed out my limit in the name of cleaning things up, can you reset my message cap?

Defined spam accounts:

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I'll compile these names and post them up in my main posting. Who knows, it might help Jart if she wants to run cross checks in the database to isolate IPs and sock puppets.

[Removed]

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Thx, I tried to send jart a PM, but I maxed out bombing scripts to the spammers PM box, this way it will flag "you have a new message" causing halts in their scripts. I maxed out my limit...

PM jart directly, as I am maxxed out.

http://www.occupywallst.org/users/jart

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

That's a good idea. I used to bomb the message boxes of conspiracy theorists. Spammers seem to be the new problem today. I'll message jart.

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

I am blocked from messaging from trying to shut them down. I sent to all accounts at the same timel It has held them off for now, see if in your message he can remove my cap on messages, and possibly define a variable to block the post using "Watch" "online" and generate return code defined as "system malfunction" "502 error" something, these accounts are new, maybe limit posting new threads(not replying) 24 hours that will slow them as well

See if we can make it so that there is a REPORT AS SPAM button on the post, available to you and me this has to stop....

Why do you never report your friend Thrasymaque who makes fake dislike buttons which redirect people to sites I have been told are child porn? I did not stay long enough to confirm that, of course. Stop defending your "friend."

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

That is simply not true... The users in this list above are posting SPAM, we are trying to stop it.

As for the child porn allegation, one must not believe everything they are told;

If that were true he would have been banned. If I started making posts about you or others, bashing what you were doing due to simple disagreement of opinion, and made threads about you spreading rumors, would that not make you want to defend yourself? Or upset at the very least? Don't believe everything you read on here, most if it is exaggeration.

[-] 2 points by BlueRose (1437) 12 years ago

You cannot say your "friend" Thrasymaque is not spamming. I told you HOW he is doing it, WHERE he is doing it, investigate it yourself or shut up. Don't just bark, "That's not true."

[-] -1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

The porn is a false accusation...

[-] 1 points by BlueRose (1437) 12 years ago

How do you know, did you GO to the site "he" is illegally embedding in fake "dislike" buttons?

[-] 0 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Blue apparently the people who have started trouble around here are winning. Yes, I followed the link and scanned it it is a joke, nothing more and no porn.

Thrasy is just at wits end....I am almost ready to give up here myself, there used to be actual debate and It was a peter pan site with fairies and magic lights no porn

[-] -1 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 12 years ago

I think you need to investigate it first. Good luck finding child porn. I'll give you $1000 dollars if you do. That's a promise.

[-] -1 points by NewEnglandPatriot (916) from Dartmouth, MA 12 years ago

Delete all associated posts, define "Watch" and "video" as parameters to block post, and limit posts to one page with a certain # of links. I have to weed through several, they take up the recent list as of lately.

Thrasy, good post.. Everyone else, we need to report these users, they are SPAM accounts without a doubt.
