#S17: Our One Demand Is To End Capitalism

Posted 10 years ago on Sept. 16, 2013, 9:59 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

On September 17, 2013, the second anniversary of the beginning of the Occupy Movement, tens of thousands will come together across the country and the world to honor the most important and influential social movement in generations. As we exchange stories about the past and ideas for the future, we will be opposing a number of the 1%’s toxic attempts to siphon even more of our money and power away from us. The Trans Pacific Partnership “free trade” agreement, the undue influence of money in politics, and the lack of accountability in the global financial sector will be just a few of our targets. But, as we attack these symptoms it is necessary that we remember the disease: capitalism.

Pyramid of the capitalist system

Without capitalism, there could be no undue influence of money in politics. Without capitalism, trade would be truly free. Without capitalism, the financial sector would be an embarassing relic of the past, a warning to future generations. Without capitalism, there can be no neoliberalism.

Anticapitalism is the true big tent. Whether or not you think the reforms proposed and enacted by various Occupy-related groups (like StrikeDebt, Occupy Sandy and the Occupy Card) will fix the systemic problems of capitalism, they are campaigns worth supporting. They provide temporary relief to people who need the most and allow us to experiment with alternatives. This is a good thing. But we can't let a good treatment distract us from a cure. Without addressing the underlying cause of capitalism, these problems will only get worse.

Globalization will continue to send jobs overseas. Technology will continue to automate human labor and obsolete the professions of millions of workers who will have no choice but to adapt. But for those who can't adapt to the new economy, the sentence under capitalism is death. This is because capitalism denies the necessities for human survival (like food, housing, and health care) to those unable to sell themselves to corporations. Even in times of plenty when you'd think we'd have to work less and less.

The end of capitalism means the beginning of your new life - a life where your home cannot be taken from you by force to maintain the bottom-line of a multi-billion dollar company that pays less in taxes than you; a life where you own your future; a life where politics represents you. The end of capitalism means the life you’ve always wanted but never thought you could have. The end of capitalism means freedom.

The 1% owned the mainstream American political system long before the Supreme Court upheld Citizens United. The 1% oppressed the global 99% long before “free trade” agreements became the norm. The 1% used the financial sector to swindle the people long before Dodd-Frank was repealed, long before the Federal Reserve.

As we come together on #S17 it is important that as we oppose the institutions that capitalism has created to oppress us, that we oppose capitalism as well. If we allow ourselves to be held hostage by the symptoms of our disease we will never find our way to the cure. The cure, as we knew and demonstrated two years ago, is revolution.

Two years after Occupy Wall Street was founded we are still here, and so are our problems. On September 17th, and every day - take the street, take your jobs, take back your money, take back your power. Organize.

Robert Reich on a living wage:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-reich/the-minimum-wage-guns-hea_b_2695422.html

I just listened with disgust to "Morning Joe" hosts claiming that raising the minimum wage would harm employment. Perhaps, they even discussed, we should "throw out" the minimum wage altogether. Really? A minimum wage, they say, hurts employers. Joe, did succumb and say that maybe a company like Walmart could pay a living wage, but he declared, it would be too difficult for McDonald's and Burger King. Really?

So, profits are all that matter, and god forbid we limit the profits of the fat cats. Let them eat cake! they say.

It is just this kind of attitude that makes me declare that capitalism, as an economic system, needs to go altogether. Because, obviously, it is way too difficult to get the wealthy and capitalists to act like human beings and share the profits with the people so that the people aren't living in the gutter.

Even these tv hosts, we pay their big salaries, we pay because we pay for the freaking cable bills that ultimately pay their salaries. We pay for the advertisements when we purchase goods. It's wrong. This system is an abject failure.

Because I am 50, I can remember a time when Capitalism wasn't as evil as it is now. My family went from being poor to being middle class. But capitalism has changed, and people on the right seem to be the last ones to realize this. How can you lift yourself by your bootstraps when the bootstraps have been taken away?

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Do you see capitalism ending any time soon?

The idea is to come up with a SOLUTION we are FOR and stop being AGAINST things. We can be FOR A NEW CONCEPT for example: CoCapitalism. The concept details can be worked out that provides a solution we the 99% can accept! This way, the capitalists can begin to understand that we like money but want to be fair about how it spreads. We have to STOP being against everything.
Here are a couple of suggestions: Every state has a state referendum so we the people can put a bill on the ballot. for example: a bill that gives Congress the same health program the rest of us have and they don't get it for the rest of their lives. Do you think they will ever put that to a vote?

  1. Public time from every tv station. The FCC owns the rights to broadcasting and give licences to stations so every station is required to devote x time for a public debate for every election:
  2. Publicly funded campaigns. Every time we file our tax return, we donate to this cause. THIS IS CRITICAL or we continue to be run by corporations.
There is a good start. Let's work FOR THIS.

Military BRAZILIAN afraid of justice. Brazil's military afraid of the truth. In: http://sociedademilitar.com.br/index.php/colunistas/robson-augusto/669-os-militares-serao-responsabilizados-e-punidos-alguem-duvida-disso-em-menos-de-tres-anos-comecarao-os-julgamentos.html

Investigations involving the military in the deaths of over 8000 Indians ... The laws may change and the military can be penalized comprisão perpetuates ... Site advises military generals and escape from Brazil. Investigations suggest that soldiers committed crimes, and as in Argentina, the Brazilian soldiers who served in diitadura already thinking of fleeing the country. An inquisition can get. Some will be sentenced to life imprisonment and will die in prison, without any military honors at his burial, others "just" lose his post and wages. --- Although it is said and repeat that the Truth Commission has the sole purpose of clarifying the past and has no punitive, it is clear that investigations into the alleged crimes committed by agents of the state are in fact a thinly disguised survey that has aimed to collect evidence that the "agents of repression" be penalized. In our view there is a remote possibility that this calculation simply modify our history books, the reported results are likely to create the "outcry" necessary for the dream paredon ... The movement needs a benefactor to fund a long range grass roots movement at the precinct level and an infrastructure of think tanks and propaganda organs. That's how the Koch brothers and the rest of their ilk took over the conservative districts of the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is ripe for a takeover, having sold out to Wall Street and become Republican Lite on economic matters. They follow the same austerity driven economics that was appropriate to a country on the gold standard. Modern Money Theory is the economics of the future that is appropriate to a country with country with a fiat currency and its proponents advocate a federal guaranteed jobs buffer to keep labor in employment at all times to maintain their skills and esteem. Alignment of the 99% movement with MMT will put it on a positive path to getting the sponsorship it needs for a comprehensive, long term footing to wrest control of the Democratic Party from those who have sold out to Wall Street.

Occupy is anarcho-communist, so yes, we push for communism. I agree with Marx though, communism is only possible after there is no more scarcity of goods. Until we get there, socialism is the answer.

We were discussing your misunderstanding of the term 'anarcho-communist' and how you perceive it to be a contradiction. This is because you weren't aware that 'anarchism' is a more nuanced position than simply 'no government'.

Then you made very ironic comments about people not understanding 'nuance' and having 'no idea'.

Now you are posting irrelevant links about the government shutdown.

Yea.

IF there are no rulers, then anyone is free to make up the rules.

False, the rules can be made by everyone working together. This is the idea of a referendum where everyone participates with a vote.

and the reason it has no purpose is simply because a commitment to deconstruction results in an endless series of deconstructions

Anarchy is not about deconstruction, it's about constructing together.

Alternate business models are springing up, worker owned, green focused...etc..Capitalism must be phased out gradually. We don't have the power to simply tell them to stop and as they continue to squeeze, their system moves nearer to collapse. Working on many simultaneous fronts, consumer education, nondenominational spiritual education(to counter the greed/fear paradigm), using local banks, boycotts, supporting local business instead of the multinationals, voting out politicians who support TPP like entities.

BBC about TVP

"The future is our responsibility, but change will not take place until the majority lose confidence in their dictator’s and elected officials’ ability to solve problems. It will likely take an economic catastrophe resulting in enormous human suffering to bring about true social change." - Jacque Fresco

I never liked the violent revolution scenario and I don't see why so many must suffer in a transition to sanity. There is something attractive about the idea of wiping the slate clean and starting from scratch but just as capitalism has slowly bled the world out, so it must be bled by alternate system taking away its air. imo

[-] 1 points by Brynin (39) 10 years ago

[-] 1 points by Brynin (39) 10 years ago

"[A Resource-Based Economy] is in the application of the methods of science with human concern and environmental concern. If we used the scientific method throughout the world, the probability of war drops to zero. The probability of human suffering disappears. Deprivation, poverty, crime - all those things tend to disappear because there's no basis. I'm strictly concerned with the environment that people are raised in and if that environment is altered, so will behaviors be altered." - Jacque Fresco

The Venus Project, however it is implemented, is the logical next step from where we are now. Get the automation up, and you eliminate effectively every problem we have. A similar, albeit decentralised variation of this is that of open source ecology - I'll leave you guys to look it up. But remember it is pointless to criticise the system without offering superior alternatives.

I have.....watched-researched everything i can find on TVP..for the past 7-8yrs and all the underlining elements that go along with it. I posted some comments related to TVP. I wasn't sure if occupy even knew about TVP. I never hear it talked about or see it posted on social media that occupy uses to spread information. I've tried sharing it on OWS Facebook pages, they never share it. SO i stopped paying attention to those pages for the most part.

Capitalism has become the dominant system because it is more efficient.

If you intend to be steamrolled, this is the way to go.

If you really want something better then you may want to read this:

http://blog.naturalmoney.org/130911.html

[-] 3 points by Dianne123 (9) 10 years ago

Capitalism has become the dominant system because it is led by sociopaths who manipulate governments and kill people for a profit. All markets need to be highly regulated for safety of product, ecologically sustainable products, workers rights, respect for the sovreignty of other nations...etc. with permanent fair rules for trade. When a "person" violates those rules, they need to be banned from participation in the market and sent to prison and the company must make restitution for the violation plus a penalty.

[-] 3 points by niphtrique (323) from Sneek, FR 10 years ago

The basic idea of capitalism is not that it is led by sociopaths who manipulate governments and kill people for a profit. That is a possible outcome however if there is too much blind faith in capitalism, but governments can also kill on their own, and even more so if there is blind faith in government.

If you want rules, they probably need to be democratically agreed upon. But if they don't work, what do you do? Think of prohibition or drug trafficking? I only propose an idea that may be more efficient. That is the only way you may change the system. Natural Money seems more humane to me, but it is difficult to know in advance how it will work out.

[-] 0 points by aaronparr (597) 10 years ago

In correct. Capitalism is grossly inefficient. Our current gov't is the direct result of capitalism. Our current economy is the result of capitalism as well.

There is no such thing as a pure system. There will always be a gov't - and therefore crony capitalism is the same thing as capitalism.

[-] 0 points by nazihunter (215) 10 years ago

The coop card seems like a capitalistic compromise. I'm not saying that's bad. There needn't be an end to capitalism entirely. But without guidelines, without ethics, morality and a commitment to posterity and duty for the future, we are seeing what a failure capitalism is. A good analogy would be Suzanne Somers talking on Sean Hannity some years back stating that she's against socialized medicine like Canada. (Her husband is a doctor). Yes, and doctors from other countries want to flood here were they can take advantage of low taxes and ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS ASTRONOMICAL MEDICAL COSTS. In short, she's a greedy wench. Doctors in Canada and Britain make fine salaries They are paid according to their profession and years of service. Instead, what we have is a corrupt system of doctors who are assured patients through insurance and they want to see as many as they can in the span of an hour so they can charge hundreds of dollars times ten. They tack on services you don't need. You spend more time with an assistant than you do an actual doctor and then you find services you never asked for or needed tacked on to the bill. You want to know how well doctors do? Drive by their house. Yet their taxes go up a half percent and they scream bloody murder about big government, the same big government that takes all the kickbacks from the insurance companies. I'm with those rich doctors. We don't need big government...just like we don't need insurance companies who decide what they'll cover and not and doctors who devise services we don't need while we get deprived of what we do need. A vicious game all centered on unadulterated greed. What happened to the doctor's oath to the patient? They'll say they honor it BUT THEY ARE LYING. If the government flat out told the insurance companies they will pay for any service needed PERIOD, and doctors charged for only what was needed. instead of what they want to treat you for to make more money and spent the time with the patient. Whatever time is need...one minute or two hours. No doubt malpractice would go wayyyy dowwwn. But, my guess is they lie about that too. To be moral and ethical, you shouldn't pay for any doctor that doesn't have your best interests at heart. Then greed doesn't exist. You measure your life by the people you save, not how you enrich yourself while driving people into insanity and death. And ioh, let's not forget the pharmaceutical companies. But my fingers are tired.

[-] 1 points by h3lblad3 (1) 10 years ago

Capitalism is the ownership of the means of production by private owners. Having nothing but coops would mean capitalism would be dead and socialism would be in its place since, as is the textbook definition of socialism, the workers would be in control of the means of production.

All capitalism is is the ownership of the means of production by people who solely benefit from others' work. Their "jobs" at the top could be eliminated and spread out among the workers (or even given to in-company elected).

[-] 2 points by nazihunter (215) 10 years ago

what about mom-and-pop stores? insurance? medicine? home loans? no doubt it gets complicated. What if one coop is forced into non-existence by another? I think all the labels and pre-prescribed anecdotes need abandoning and a combination of philosophies tempered by ethical and moral code. Also, what makes sense? The Chinese have a law whereby you can only have 2 children, (or something like that). In a country where you 5 times the population of anyone else, (except India). Is it any wonder we see our lovely capitalist captains replacing our work force with them? Capitalism is failing very badly because it has been for 40 years. The 2 problems that exist today are 1-There are still a vast number of lunkheads in this country that can't see what's happening right in front of them, nor will they admit it while they benefit from it and 2-A rush to replace it will the result of complete despair. Any attempt to replace it must be well-thought out and have checks and balances along the way. People will have to admit when they are wrong and let something that works step in. I say that because we are severely lacking in people who'll admit when they are wrong today. I agree a collective can agree what's best for a collective as opposed to a few people. I just don't think it applies in all situations.

[-] -2 points by yodavision (3) 10 years ago

End secrecy first. With secrecy it doesn't matter what kind of system is used, corruption prevails.

[-] -2 points by TropicalDepression (-45) 10 years ago

I dont see how instituting other systems that are still money based would mean there is no money in politics? Its either allowed or its not.
